Hey folks!

I just got back from a meeting with the local folks who are helping with this thing (actually, its more like I'm the one helping, they're doing a whole lot!) and here's what need to tell everyone right now:

1) The dates we are planning for are July 26-29th.

2) The location is the Doubletree Hotel St. Louis at Westport

3) We still have to meet with the hotel to finalize everything and work out the contract details, but we're planning on meeting with them next Monday.

4) On Monday, or shortly thereafter, we'll have a website up and a way to purchase tickets (which will include a ticket price, of course).

5) We'll have a schedule of tentative events on the website, but for now, I can safely say that we're planning on: Assassins, a Costume Contest/Ball/Dance, a Pirates and Gypsies themed costume party, lots of games and contests, roundtable seminars like we did back in '05, a hospitality room, and more.

6) We are NOT planning a large formal dinner, nor are we providing any meals, although we'll be working with the hotel to make as many food options available as possible.

7) We'll be looking for people willing to coordinate and run games, contests, and events, as well as for people who are willing to "babysit" the hospitality quite for an hour or two at a time during the Con. More on that as we nail down what exactly we'll be doing and we'll have an email address where you can write to offer to help out.

8) We'll get information on SimuCon Ticket prices and Hotel Rates out as soon as possible, but we need to meet with the hotel and work out details on everything so we know what we have to charge to cover meeting rooms and any other stuff we are getting from the hotel. So far, they've been AMAZING to work with and I think we'll be able to keep the price VERY reasonable, however I will say in advance that ALL of this will hinge on how many rooms we book.

9) T-Shirts are still up in the air at this point, but FYI, free t-shirts will affect the price of the ticket (significantly) and we'll either do free shirts for everyone or we'll go with Cafepress (or something similar) and let people order their own. We can't go down the road of different ticket prices for those who want shirts and those who don't. It'll be all or nothing and we'll do out BEST to make it happen, but at this point we can't promise anything.

10) More info to come, of course, but I know people are dying to know as much as possible right now.

This really made me laugh.

Anyhow anyone have fun at these kinds of events? What are the relative ages and demeanors of the people that go? IE alot of young, or middle aged, or old... And whether they tend to get drunk, or rowdy or whatnot.

I have a seen a few pictures from other Cons, but it seemed like most of them were just a few personal pics of a group of friends. I was assuming there were more people...

I'd like to give Solomon a free car, but he has to buy a toothpick from me for $10,000. They might have gotten away with the "free" t-shirt thing before he said that, but anyone who reads that doesn't want a "free" t-shirt will be mighty pissed off if they decide to include it in the ticket price. What a stupid thing for him to say.

If you're drunk, it's fun. If you're not, you'll want to murder most of the people there. Ages usually range from 18-128. Most of the people are alright. I probably wouldn't take them to a Slayer show, but they're not bad people. Occasionally you'll run into someone that thinks they're as badass irl as their decked out character(s) are, and/or burn your ear off with things about their character you really don't give a shit about. I pulled that death rum guy over once for example cause I wanted to try that shit (it's about like drinking diesel), and wound up having to hear this 5+ page long story about the history of his character. I say 5+ pages because he actually pulled pieces of notebook paper out of his pocket with the whole thing written down, at least 5 pages worth, front and back and began reading it to me. I just kinda nodded my head and kept drinking. Nice guy overall but...damn I wanted to rip my own face off, jump through the window and impale myself on the fence.

Word of advice: If you go, stay drunk.

It's all fun and games until some puts on their wizard robes and hat.

.

How easy (if at all) would it be to crash one of these?

That is hilarious Methais. I will be sure to make up some very long and obnoxious BS history for ALL of the characters I play if I ever goto one of these things. Just to see how long people will put up with me.

I'll have to disagree with Methais' statement. I've been to SimuCons 2003-2005, managed to stay sober each time and had a fantastic time. I hadn't really spoken at length with Eldreth of the death-rum infamy, but I've also never run into someone who will hold you hostage while they read their character's history. Not to say it didn't happen, but it doesn't happen for everyone.

Con really is a lot like one huge party stretched out over several days, and stuff happens there that you pretty much won't see anywhere else. I've yet to hear of another blind person going out to look for a drunk who tells the police that he's a bard and belongs to room 114, for example.

Con really is what you make of it, and if you're out to have fun, you'll find it.

I did appreciate Whatley's T-shirt a couple cons ago that read something like, "Don't talk to me about your character!"

Never been to a SimuCon, but I have met other groups of gamers.

Like Methais said, good people. All around.

Also, getting drunk with other gamers is fun. But so is morning coffee over a good breakfast.

I had fun don't get me wrong. It was just a lot better when I was hammered. To give things the benefit of the doubt though, I hate everything when I'm hungover, and I started drinking almost immediately when I got there, so my entire time was spent either drunk or hungover. I wouldn't say it was worth the money spent, but that doesn't mean it was a bad time. I went in 2003.

I went to whatever the last one was, and was sober the whole time, and it was good. The seminars and stuff were ok, I'd recommend them if you're into a certain aspect of the game but they're by no means required. The people are all really nice, and I don't recall getting stuck talking to anyone about their character.

To tell an anecdote about how nice people are: My ride got really drunk, peed on a one of the seats in the hotel, then got kicked out and I never saw him again. Later that day I had another ride secured, and they wouldn't let me pay for gas money...on a trip from St. Louis to Northern Virginia, that's a decent amount of gas. We got back in pretty late, so they (it was a couple) let me sleep in one of their beds and I think there was an offer of breakfast, though unfortunately they had cats and the medicine/allergies left me not very hungry :(

I'm out of school during that week and I might use Simucon as an excuse to see my brother and sister-in-law even though I don't play anymore.

The con is a really nice time. As has been said, the people are really nice. I too have spent some time listening to Eldreth. I like him, hes a nice fellow. And yeah, that stuff is damn strong.

You can find people from all walks. You can find some people who are really into their characters just as you can find those whod rather talk mechanics or not discuss the game at all. Some folks are so into it youll even find them playing the games in the hospitality suite. As Methais said, theres kids who arent legal to drink to retired seniors.

I dont consider the seminars "worth" an admission fee as much as I think of the money as a donation for organizing the party. That said, lots of people crash each year. Its been a growing problem for Simu, because they need to guarantee a certain amount of rented rooms to the hotel.

Overall, Id say its absolutely worth going. Its like a 4 day party and makes for an excellent vacation. I hope I can swing going this year myself.

I think I might actually go this time. July 26-29 are what days of the week? I will be working this summer of course, but as long as we don't have a serial killer running around NYC whose on trial that month, I think I might be okay. ;)

:lolwave: The guy on the right is Brady. He play(ed?) DragonRealms. He was married and apparently bisexual but now he's not married and he's gay. Real weird guy. Nice and all, but he was hitting on guys worse than Dessedemona was at DisneyCon!

Edited to add, all the other guys in that pic rock! From l-r Boomsplat, Slur, Zimzum, Washee, and Bisco.

If I went to a Simucon I'd no longer be a closet GS'er. I couldn't even discuss GS in public with my brother who also played.

Of course WoW has now filled the void of things that are not to be discussed.

I went to SimuCon in 2004 and I had a lot of fun, but I wouldn't pay for the event again. I paid that time for the ticket to go to seminars and the dinner and stuff only because I'd never gone before. It definitely was NOT worth the ticket price.

It was a ton of fun getting to hang out with friends and see everyone in a general location, so if I did decide to go, I'd just crash and then hang out anyway. They can't keep people from going into the bar or the hotel or the common areas, just the meeting rooms.

Oh and about the people who play in the one gaming room at the Con, it's really funny having a whole room of drunk people playing around together in the park doing random stupid shit like we did heh.

All in all, I'd go again, I'd just not pay to go.

That explains it right there. DR people are really weird.

I had fun at the Con I went to. I ended up hanging out a lot with people I'd never even met in the game before. It's more fun if you have friends going too, but if you don't it can still be a good time cause everyone is pretty friendly.

Oh and that Eldreth guy. He does that in the game too, going on and on about his character history. But I never ran into anyone at the Con wanting to do that thank god!
