Mountains of trash stuffed inside a woman's car in Cape Cod, Mass., caused the car to accelerate and crash, according to police.
Police in West Yarmouth said there was so much trash in 53-year-old Ann Ann Biglan's Ford Focus that some of it fell onto the gas and brake pedals, causing her to lose control.
While losing control, Biglan drove through a post office parking space, over the curb and across a freeway.
She then hit a Ford Explorer and backed over another sidewalk before finally crashing into a flowerpot in a gas station's parking lot.
Biglan was charged with negligent and impeded operation of a motor vehicle, failure to use care in backing, and operating with a rejected safety inspection sticker.

Holy shit, look at all that crap! There are like 10 items in our car's backseat and even that makes me crazy.

Woman Possibly Suffering From Hoarding Causes Accident, Due To Trash In Vehicle

Ann Biglan, 53, is apparently suffering from hoarding, and that disease is what caused not only her life but her car to spiral out of control. According to a WBZTV report on Friday, old coffee cups jammed her accelerator, she crossed three lanes of traffic on Route 28 and crashed into a pole and a car.

My grand-aunt has this problem. She collects and keep EVERYTHING because she's afraid that someday she'll need it. The day my family helped her move from one state to another, we had to throw hundreds of bags of garbage out of her apartment. She cried for days at the loss. It's pretty sad.

Ah okay, so it's just assumptions that only fat people hoard and have shit all over the place. Nice.
I don't think anyone made that assumption. He said Wallow not Waddle.

Trash-Filled Car Raises Concern About Owner
(WBZ) BOSTON If we're talking about a few old coffee cups or maybe a wrapper or two, a little bit of a mess in your car can be acceptable, but this weekend, a Cape Cod woman's car was so overrun with garbage, it actually caused a crash.
The trash pileup is troubling and it could be a sign of a serious medical condition.
The car jammed with shopping bags and trash send police to a Yarmouth woman's home. "It's not a very livable condition that you want to see… We want to get her some help," said Sgt. Gerard Britt of the Yarmouth Police Department.
Help is needed because Ann Biglan's home is overflowing. It's surrounded by bags and three cars full of household items and debris. On Friday, old coffee cups jammed her accelerator; she crossed three lanes of traffic on Route 28 and crashed into a pole and a car.
"It looks like items she purchased and is continuing to hold onto for whatever reason. She's hording all this," said Britt.
Right now, there is no way in or out about a house. There is so much stuff inside the home, the front door is bowed out.
"Twenty percent with obsessive compulsive disorder, which may be one to two percent of the population -- at least statistically, have hoarding as one of their main obsessive and compulsive problems," said Dr. Shannon Scarry of the Cape Cod Hospital.
"If you need to get some help, we're going to help you with that," said Officer Britt as he spoke through a closed window to Ann.
In the end, police helped Ann move out of her home because they don't think the house and Ann are safe.
The house is in such bad shape, town officials and the Health Department plan to take steps to have it condemned.

I had a jammed accelerator on a motorcycle once (it was a mechanical problem, not a coffee cup, though). Turning your engine off and/or putting it in neutral is the way to go...
She probably has mental problems, but the mental image of the front door being bent outwards under the stress of all the crap in there is still funny.

It does seem she has a disorder. I can't imagine a house filled with so much stuff that the door would bow outward. Glad they are helping her.
However. They better make sure that junk is not structural. I am sure some of it may be keeping the house up.

Glad no one was hurt. I sort of feel bad for the lady but couldn't she just have moved the stuff from the car into her house if she was suffering from a hoarding disorder? And then sought help? That's still pretty gross and unsanitary >.< I hope she *does* get some help.

I'm waiting on the libs in MA to start passing legislation regarding number of items inside a vehicle... more than 10 is a misdemeanor.. more than 20 is a felony.

WEST YARMOUTH - Ann Biglin crammed so many things into her house on Nauset Road that she had little choice but to crawl out a window to reach the rest of the world.
One of the trash-laden cars at the house on Nauset Road, West Yarmouth, condemned by the town's health department.
(Steve Heaslip/Cape Cod Times)
The structure has now been condemned and Biglin is in the hospital, Yarmouth police and health officials said yesterday.
''She is somebody who is in a rough situation with no easy answer,'' Yarmouth Police Lt. Steven Xiarhos said.
Biglin's story made national headlines after she crashed her Ford Focus into a sport utility vehicle on Feb. 9 because some of the garbage that filled her car jammed the gas pedal.
Her home has not had heat since 2005 and the bathroom was not working either, Yarmouth Health Director Bruce Murphy said.
''She was just using an electric blanket,'' he said.
After discussions with police and the town's building inspector, health inspectors condemned the building as unfit for human habitation, Murphy said.
Police have worked with Biglin, 53, for the past four years on what Xiarhos said is one of the toughest cases of hoarding he has seen.
Off-duty police officers have helped Biglin clean her home and accompanied her to doctors appointments, he said.
In 2003 inmates from the Barnstable County Jail came to her home to clean the yard but it didn't last, Xiarhos said.
When police checked on her Monday they found her home piled high with junk, including two additional cars packed as tightly as the Ford.
Police contacted Biglin's doctor, and she was taken to Cape Cod Hospital, Xiarhos said.
Yesterday, large clear plastic sheets covered mounds of garbage bags between a white Toyota Corolla and the house.
In the backyard, garbage covered five rusting bicycles. Stacks of plastic baskets were scattered in the wet grass.
Neighbors said they didn't know Biglin except to wave.
Biglin has owned the house since 1976, according to the Yarmouth assessor's office.
She is the registered owner of the three cars in the driveway, according to motor vehicle records.
Police and health officials have dealt with 10 other individuals with similar issues during the time they have known about Biglin, but her situation is one of the most acute, Murphy said.
''It is an extreme case of hoarding,'' he said.
Condemning the building may be a way to get Biglin the help she needs while the property is cleaned up and the utilities fixed, Murphy said.
Hoarding can be a symptom of an obsessive compulsive disorder, Dr. Shannon Scarry, director of Cape Cod Healthcare's Department of Behavioral and Mental Health Services, said yesterday.
''People who have OCD actually are aware that their obsessions and compulsions are irrational but they cannot help it,'' Scarry said.
The condition is often treatable with medication and therapy, Scarry said.
In one of the most famous cases from the early 20th century, Homer and Langley Collyer amassed so much junk in their Manhattan mansion that they had to crawl through small tunnels to get around the building.
The brothers were eventually found dead, one of them buried by the newspapers and other things that lined their lives.
