Yesterday was my room-mate's birthday. I gave him this really cool wooden box with a lock and leather straps, sticking a plastic beetle (a scarab, oh no!) so it'd pop out when he opened the box. Also stuck a plate (from a new set of dishes, but only one would fit) in the box with a note saying, "It's a plated box!" and filled it with some foil wrapped coins and about 30 bucks in change, cushioned so it wouldn't rattle.

The look on his face was priceless! He unwrapped the box, but didn't make the GS connection until he opened it and the scarab popped out, at which point he started laughing. Then he saw the plate and the note and started laughing even harder.

We've been making jokes about it all day now. This is the second time I've given him a GS type present. Not sure yet what I'll do for next year, but I've got a year to plot.

On the next one you should rig to explode upon opening. As he flails to the ground attempting to put out the flames you should then point and laugh while saying "Look you see! It was trapped! You need training on your perception!"
