Pete Carroll reportedly is blaming Louisiana State fans for the controversy involving Joe McKnight, because Tigers fans are unhappy the prized running back recruit left the state and chose USC.

"The LSU people are going crazy with it," the USC coach told the Los Angeles Daily News. "Everyone down there is raising a stink. There's nothing to worry about. It absolutely did not happen."

McKnight signed a national letter of intent with USC on Wednesday and made comments during a news conference that seemed to suggest communications involving former Trojan and Heisman winner Reggie Bush, who is now with the New Orleans Saints.

Former players are forbidden by NCAA recruiting rules from telephoning prospective recruits, their relatives or guardians.

Carroll has vehemently denied any phone calls were placed to or received from Bush in the recruit's presence.

“It didn't happen,” Carroll told the Los Angeles Daily News. “So we won't get penalized. You can look at the phone records. I'm not worried about it one bit. That conversation with Bush never existed. Reggie and everyone else will tell you it didn't happen.

Bush's lawyer told the Los Angeles Times on Friday that the running back didn't have any communication with McKnight and has had no involvement with USC's recruiting activities.

Carroll, who said McKnight's comments on Wednesday were "twisted," spoke with the recruit on Friday.

“Joe felt terrible that all this came about," Carroll told the Times.

McKnight’s high school football coach J.T. Curtis said the recruit misspoke during the news conference.

“He said when they came in his house, the discussion was brought up about probation and that’s when the conversation came up that they had talked to Reggie, but Joe was not there,” Curtis said. “He said, ’I was not on the speakerphone. I never called him and he never called me. I want to make it clear I never spoke to Reggie and he never spoke to me. I just messed it up. I shouldn’t have said it that way (at the news conference).”’

The NCAA and the Pac-10 Conference are investigating whether Bush or his family received “improper benefits” from agents while he was playing for USC.

Regarding McKnight, Mike Matthews, associate commissioner of compliance for the Pac- 10, said boosters are not supposed to be involved in the recruiting process but could not comment without knowing specifics. NCAA spokeswoman Crissy Schluep also said she could not comment without knowing more.

Curtis said McKnight may have been overwhelmed by the attention and scrutiny that accompanied his announcement.

“At the press conference, it seemed like he got 1,000 questions in five minutes,” Curtis said. “If you saw what was going on it would be easier to understand.”

The Daily News reported that even if an illegal conversation took place between Bush and McKnight, the NCAA would likely consider it a secondary violation, which doesn't result in significant penalties.

What a crock of shit. The kid fucked up and now they're blaming us for it. I could give a shit less where he went. LSU addressed their needs, none of which were running back. They'll have up to five guys that could be a startiing tailback anywhere else. I disliked USC before, but this is rediculous.

The Corndog LSU fans have been all over USC since they split the NC. Those good ole' boys couldn't believe that a home town kid would want to play anywhere else but LSWho so they start grasping for straws.

Face it the number 1 recruit in the nation and the next Reggie Bush is coming to USC and not LSU and he is going there because he wants to.

I agree with Skeeter completely. I think it's just a matter of time until people find out how crooked that whacko of a coach and program really is. "The next Reggie Bush"..bold statement. Let's just wait and see about that. Oh..and I got a good chuckle out of "corndog LSU fans"..that was funny.

Number one Jimmy Clausen was the top recruit in the nation, not McKnight.

Number two Charles Scott will have a better year than McKnight. You heard it here first.

Jimmy Claussen was rated #1 by SOME services and not by others. ESPN had him as low as number 8 I believe. Scout and Rivals has Claussen 1 and McKnight 2. Makes no difference. Claussen, like Notre Dame, is over rated.

You are just a hater.

A 17 year old kid makes a vague reference to a direct question about whether or not he thought USC was going to have Sanctions because of the Reggie Bush blackmail story. He said that PC talked to RB and both agree that nothing would come of this. Suddenly he was talking directly to RB... The ridiculous media takes it and makes it a national headline with no fact checking and people like you who just spread this crap even further.

USC has kind of become like the NY Yankees of college football, they are playing with such a stacked deck of talent and at a different level that some people just have to hate them for it.

LOL

That's why they lost 2 HUGE games to unranked teams last year, right?

Miami is a better program than 99% of D1 programs now.

20 years ago, different story.

Yeah, pretty scary this was the "rebuilding" year and they were only a few points away from the National Championship game themselves over Florida...

A couple of close losses to a pretty good Oregon State team and their rivals.

Followed up by the destruction of Michigan.

Not to mention their complete annihilation of WSU, Wash, and Sun Devils. oh wait.

Correct,

And Florida, Ohio St, and LSU never played a close game last year...I don't think the SEC lost a non-conference game or even had a close one at all, EVER.

Do you really think that USC was a mediocre football team last year?

I would have loved to have seen a USC/Florida or USC/LSU NC game. I hope we get it this year. But nothing is easy in college football just ask Ohio State what it is like playing with a target on your back all season.

There are other good teams in college football some maybe better than USC but don't try and pretend they are anything but one of the top 5 teams and progams going right now, if you say otherwise then you know nothing about college football and you should probably leave the thread alone.

I don't think they were a mediocre team but really, what tough games were on their schedule last year?

Drew

What tough games do they play any year? ND has been a joke for 20 years, and they play in the freakin Pac10. USC has to get pumped up for one tough game a year and that's the national championship game. Big12, SEC, ACC teams have to play 3-5 big games a year and that's much harder to sustain.

Just ask OSU what it's like to play a real team from a real conference.

I don't think the SEC lost a non-conference game or even had a close one at all, EVER.Tennessee lost to Penn State.
Kentucky got annihilated by Louisville.
Vanderbilt lost to Michigan.
Arkansas got spanked by USC and lost to Wisconsin.
Alabama lost to Oklahoma State.
Ole Miss lost to Wake Forest.
Mississippi State lost to Tulane and West Virginia.

All told, 8 losses in non-SEC play.

lol, you were being sarcastic.

I've yet to hear how it's the LSU fans fault for McKnight claiming he talked to Reggie Bush.

Non-conference games mean shit unless you play in the Pac-10 or Big Ten.

In all honesty, there was NO dominating team this year in its entirety...

Clarification... there was no really impressive team the whole year (after Bowl week).
