Hope no one from PC lives up there. OI that is a lot of snow.

OSWEGO, New York (AP) -- While the northern Plains and Northeast shiver in dangerously cold temperatures, the folks in upstate New York are keeping warm shoveling snow -- lots of snow.

Since Sunday, the small towns of Parish and Mexico have recorded more than 6 feet of snow, and forecasters with the National Weather Service say it isn't over yet.

Another 2 feet or more of heavy lake-effect snow was expected Thursday for the communities along eastern Lake Ontario, and more squalls are likely through the weekend.

"We're just trying to keep up. It's almost an unreal amount," said Mayor Randy Bateman of Oswego, where 70 inches of snow had fallen by Thursday morning. "We catch up when it stops, but then it just comes again, even heavier."
Five inches per hour

Whiteout conditions -- the snow has been falling at a rate of 5 inches an hour at times -- forced state police to temporarily close Interstate 81 between Central Square and Pulaski, a stretch of about 15 miles.

Travel advisories against unnecessary travel were posted for Oswego and its neighboring counties. Mexico officials renewed a snow emergency declaration, and many government offices were closed.

Schools were closed for a fourth day in Oswego and Mexico.

In West Virginia, where as much as 9 inches of snow has fallen, some schools that had been closed were able to reopen on Thursday, but in most of the state, classes were still delayed, and in a few counties, cancelled. Officials had to call snowplow drivers out of retirement Wednesday to clear the roads.

The weather also disrupted travelers, leaving some stranded overnight in airports in the Midwest after flights to the Northeast were disrupted.

Temperatures in the Northeast were inching back up to something closer to normal for this time of year, but the upper Midwest and northern Plains still awoke to subzero temperatures Thursday -- minus-12 in Minneapolis and 3 below zero in Chicago.
Twenty deaths blamed on cold

The bitter cold and slippery roads have contributed to at least 20 deaths -- five in Ohio, four in Illinois, four in Indiana, two in Kentucky, two in Michigan, and one each in Wisconsin, New York and Maryland, authorities said. Three of them died Tuesday when two SUVs crashed on a slick road in northern Indiana. An autopsy Wednesday determined that an elderly woman found in a New York City building had died of hypothermia.

In Oswego, a big concern was keeping the city's 800 fire hydrants clear, said Fire Chief Ed Geers.

"We're just trying to keep on top of digging out the hydrants. When you get 5 feet of snow in 24 hours, it's tough," Geers said.

That's DOWNSTATE New York. Get it right.

Oh, and we've gotten around that in 24 hours, on Christmas Eve. With up to 8-12 feet drifts. Was fun.

Downstate? Wtf are you talking about?

The eastern edge of Lake Ontario? That's north of Syracuse, Central NY, almost Eastern NY. That's downstate, to roughly half the state.

Downstate = southern part of state, and you just called Oswego north of central NY. How is it in southern NY?

Downstate refers to an easterly direction when going west to east on the Thruway. Buffalo is the ultimate "upstate" city, Rochester is nominally upstate, and, in comparison, Oswego and Syracuse are downstate.

I'm from Syracuse, and everything is considered Upstate NY unless you are talking about Albany which some people love to call Eastern NY. But X is right on what is considered upstate.

If you said downstate and ya actually lived there you would get stabbed. Upstate NY ain't nuttin' to fuck wid!

There is no clear or official boundary between Upstate New York and "Downstate New York", with the term "Upstate" sometimes used to refer to the whole of the state besides New York City and Long Island (though this definition is often criticized as meaningless and provincial), and by others to refer only to the very northernmost portion of the state (i.e. the Adirondacks and other areas north of Albany.) Often times people think of Upstate New York as any areas north of Interstate 90....

If you don't live in New York City, you say you live in Upstate, Western, or Northern New York.

The some how is because you're on the opposite side of the lake.

That being said I've been snowed in while visiting Toronto (couldn't even tell where the roads were) and missed a flight out of Syracuse because of it.

I'm curious to know where that last pic was from?

I don't remember snow like that since 1993 on my birthday.

In Rochester, NY, it's not SOO bad, but my little maltese disappears when I talk him for a walk to pee in certain areas.

Was home back in Syracuse for a day as well, and it wasn't THAT bad either, about 2 feet in my mother's lawn.

Still a lot though seeing it was so nice and warm(40-50s) only a month ago.

Came off the home page of the www.drudgereport.com

I assume it is at Redfield, NY.

Unofficially, the squalls have dumped 12 feet, 2 inches of snow at Redfield. If accurate, that would break the state record of 10 feet, 7 inches of snow that fell in nearby Montague over seven days ending Jan. 1, 2002, said Steve McLaughlin, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Correct me if I am wrong. But the lake effect snow engine keeps running until the Great Lakes freeze over. Since spring is not too far away, I don't see those lakes freezing anytime soon. Those folks have a lot more snow coming their way.

146 inches!!! Sheesh

I guess folks up there aren't phased by it.

Residents of this hardy upstate New York village seem unfazed. Redfield, whose economy thrives on snowmobilers and cross-country skiers, receives an annual average of 270 inches _ more than 22 feet.

"It's snow. We get a lot of it. So what?" said Allan Babcock, a lifelong resident who owns Shar's Country Diner, a popular eatery in this village of 650 people.

WTF more than 22 feet of snow a year!

We got snow in Connecticut.. but it was shitty snow. Not very wet and it looked like a bunch of those tiny little silicone balls they put in the freshening packets in shoes and bags and what not. Oh well though, I didn't have to go to work and that was all that mattered.

I don't know where you are, Narcissiia, but we got cold, wet, sticky, nasty snow. Snow mixed in with rain, so it would stick to everything, and as it got colder then you just walked/drove on a sheet of ice. Ugh.

They let us out early from work. All of us, even customer support, which is extremely rare. We headed straight to the restaurant and had sushi, then went home and snuggled in front of the TV and watched movies.

When I stepped out of the house this morning to start the car, I got whiplashed with really cold wind. Yeah, I wasn't jazzed about leaving the house to come to work. Blech.
