Ok after coming back to gem after so many years off I am finding myself back where I was bored to tears. I thought about getting WoW finally but wasn't sure if its still worth playing or starting anew at this point? Also if I do decide to get it what servers are recomended? And do people shit all over new comers?

Its worth playing for sure! The Blood Elf area is just amazing and there are PCers on a few servers who will help you out. :)

I'd only go back to WoW if I had a serious amount of free time to invest. It's still based around team play and is not something you can effectively dip into an hour here or there every day to enjoy all the end game content.

Eh, if you're looking for a warm bubbly roleplaying community, World of Warcraft is not for you.
The 2 popular "Gs Player" servers are Alliance on Argent Dawn (RP) and Horde on Dunemaul (PvP). There are some people scattered throughout other servers, but those two have a handful of people that post on this forum.
As for shitting on new players... WoW is pretty much a fully solo-able game until you get to the level 70 cap. You won't have any interaction with players that you don't want to have, and on the other hand, it's generally pretty easy to find people to partner up with if you want to.

Not true. Karazhan is very much an easily broken-up-into-a-few-days instance. You can get to the first boss in about 20 minutes, and clearing to the bosses between isn't an epic journey like it was in MC or AQ. AND it's only 10-man, so organization and progression is much easier.
I'm glad you know what you're talking about though.
And PvP rewards are very comparable to end-game gear, which also does not require hours of continuous play. You can come and go at your leisure.

In my experience you'd get kicked out of any worthwhile guild if you only logged in a few hours every other day.

"Worthwhile" has a vastly different definition to you than it does to others, I'm sure.

Yes, obviously: If you want to kill or see all the monsters. If you want to use all the gear, enjoy all the perks of all factions, you need to put the time in.
Basically it boils down to this: If you have the odd hour every day or random time during whenever, you'll get more out of GS. If you've got a constant span of time day in day out, you'll be able to get the most out of WoW.
Then again it depends what you're after as well:
RP - GS
PvP - Wow
Accomplishment - WoW
Customizable Content - GS

I dip in and out of WoW, I don't really do the hardcore playing for hours power level thing. I play a couple of hours a week and enjoy it without getting too obsessed.

Blizzard actually putting large amounts of capital and effort into the game is another plus no one has mentioned. I wish I could trade the last year of Gemstone away for WoW.

I don't know about that. Putting years into wow results in beating the game, unless you're doing something sketchy!

Beating the game? At which point do you beat the game?

They did an excellent job with that area. One of my favorite places. Though the male blood elves are very girly.

When you're in the guild thats killing bosses before anyone else (top 1-3 kills on most major bosses in MC/BWL/Naxx) and realizing that you're getting no where but marginal upgrades... this was my experience at least.
I just wish they had unique items, and a better player-driven content method.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed (and played a ton) for the better part of two years. But selling my rogue mid-Naxx for 2,000$ was the best decision I ever made. The expansion, 10 levels, is nothing new. It goes back to the same grind at the top.
I guess for the non-diehard player the game is fine. But if you're putting in a lot of time with a decent guild then the returns, at least in my opinion, are not worth it.

How is that different than hitting level 100 in GS? With the exception of the ability to farm since Simu seems to encourage it, Gemstone offers nothing beyond WoW, while the opposite is not even close to true. Again, I wish I would have made the switch sooner, but I'm happy I made it, nonetheless.

Training stops in WoW, and it doesn't in Gemstone... I guess thats the main selling point. The only real thing I miss from WoW was the PvP. I particularly enjoyed WSG.

In GS, near the top, you can put in a month to get +5 AS and +5 DS and +3 CS.
I can get a character in WoW from 60 - 70 in the same or less playtime, with a much better, much more fun experience doing that and a larger relative return in items/powers.

Why do you have to choose between one or the other?
One is a bunch of text and more RP then lvling and the other is brilliant visuals all about lvling.
I dont think it is fair to compare them both because they are two completley different games.
If I had to chose one though I would chose GS b/c like people have said, once you get to a certain spot in the game, your done. With GS at least you could RP and have some fun.
Of course an Xbox 360 and some games would probably solve alot of problems....

The chances of you getting to that spot are statistically pretty low.

Something must have changed since I quit, do people actually RP now?

You can customize pretty much anything in GS.
One of the main selling points for me.
