View Full Version : Vista
Anyone using it yet? I saw some screen shots that looked pretty cool. Looks like they ripped off Mac’s Widgets and called them Gadgets?

The second Windows Vista goes up on the MSDNAA (basically a site where students can get free versions of all Microsoft products), I will be downloading it.
I worked for Microsoft this past summer and got to use it (actually managed to fix 2 minor bugs in it) and it definitely is a major improvement over Windows XP. The main issue you hear about is whether it's worth it for the average consumer to upgrade to it considering the price and the need for a more high end computer.
All I'll say on that is if you're happy with XP and don't have an urge to be running the newest and most innovative software, then stick to XP and wait awhile before upgrading, possibly wait until you buy a new computer altogether. But if you do have a high-end/new computer, then treat it well by upgrading to Vista.
Did Microsoft copy stuff from Mac OSX and Linux? Of course they did. Did Max OSX copy stuff from Windows XP and Linux? You better believe they did. All technology companies end up copying stuff from their predecessors, what matters in the long run is whether that company is able to innovate on the design.

College students get expensive software for incredibly cheap prices. I remember my sister bought some Microsoft program for over $150, whereas I only had to pay $15.
Vista has speech recognition hole (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6320865.stm)
Microsoft has admitted that speech recognition features in Vista could be hijacked so that a PC tells itself to delete files or folders.
Vista can respond to vocal commands and concern has been raised about malicious audio on websites or sent via e-mail.
In one scenario outlined by users a MP3 file of voice instructions was used to tell the PC to delete documents.
Microsoft said the exploit was "technically possible" but there was no need to worry.
The firm has pointed out that in order for the flaw to be exploited the speech recognition feature would need to be activated and configured and both microphone and speakers would have to be switched on.
"The exploit scenario would involve the speech recognition feature picking up commands through the microphone such as 'copy', 'delete', 'shutdown', etc. and acting on them," a Microsoft security researcher wrote on the team's official blog.

Ruh roh! Thats going to be a problem with any voice controlled computer.
Only with idiots who allow MP3's like that to run!
Those are the same idiots that spend hundreds of dollars a year getting all the spyware and viruses cleaned off their computers because they don't know how to use the internet.
And honestly if you're voice controlling your computer, I hope that does happen to you.

What are your thoughts on the (excessive) DRM built into Vista?
