Okay, I need to get someone a nice fragrance/perfume, whatever you call it for Friday for like 40-50 bucks tops.

It's not meant to be like intimate, and I honestly don't have a darn clue what women are into these days.

Cool Water came out with a women's line.
I bought some for my girlfriend a while back. It's nice. 40 or 50 for a bottle, as well.

The swiss army company makes a men's cologne.

I liked it.

Good question Sintik!

No, it's for a woman, a gift.

Myrianna
11-11-2003, 07:05 PM
Why does it have to be perfume? That's a rather personal item, only because it works with a woman's chemistry, and therefore what smells good on one will not necessarily smell good on another.
I wear Lalique, which smells ungodly wonderful on me, but yet, smells only "ok" on some other girls I know that have tried it... Does it HAVE to be perfume?

As for what women love. You can hardly ever go wrong with Ralph Lauren. Almost ALL women love it.

I agree with the opinion that giving perfume to a woman you don't know extremely well is a bad idea. Unless you don't mind it sitting in a bathroom vanity for years gathering dust.

I (and I'm sure a lot of other women) have received perfume and in most of the cases didn't wear it except for once or twice in the presence of the person who gave it to me as a courtesy. If you know what she wears and give her a bottle of it, that's great. Other than that, very risky. *Shrug* I'd much rather the guy asked me what I wear and gave me that.

I have been wearing Alfred Sung for women since I was 16. I've liked a few others but none better than Sung so far.

I don't like Ralph Lauren, Glo nor Tommy girl.

On men I like Aqua Di Gio the most.

Candies, vanilla fields, fire and ice, wings, Victoria's Secret has some good ones Amber Romance from there is good.

Also Victoria's Secret has some good gift baskets with perfume, lotion, soap all in the same scent. Good for gifts.

Does it have to be perfume or is that just what you wanna go with?

I don't know what to get a girl for her birthday this Friday and I asked people and they said perfume would be a good choice since every other gift is pretty much taken. This is a tough one. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of women's scents that I know and like, but I just can't. I don't think I've ever bothered to ask to be honest.

A woman's scent is part of her personality. Part of her allure. Were I to buy a frangrence I smelled on some one else, wouldn't that be me wanting to smell that someone else?

Tell you what though. $50 bucks at a body works store can go a long way. They do gift baskets too. I'd recommend something along those lines. Bath salts, fancy soaps, body wash, foot scrubs, after bath sprays, scented candles etc... Everyone knows most women dig this stuff, so it can be impersonal. You can also joke about it and tell her she stinks so you decided to help her out. Of course, if you are intimate, it makes for a nice time in the tub.

For women's perfume or cologne... I haven't the slightest idea. I'd have to make some phone calls to my ex's.

Have I ever steered you wrong?

Amber Romance gift basket from Victoria's Secret.

Three reasons for this gift.

1) It's an excuse to go into the store  Tayre's excuse of wanting to try things on works too but this one gets you fewer looks.

2) Most girls like gifts like that, it's something practical but still girly.

3) It's a good gift that is neutral to friendship. If you walk out of the store with a piece of buttfloss and an iron studded bra you might be too forward.

Don't feel dumb. At least until after the fact. Go with your gut. You win some you lose some. At least you are making an effort.

Gift cards to stores are good. $50 bucks will get you a meal and drinks at a semi-decent restaurant. Might get a couple of tickets to see a show.

Sometimes a simple card with a simple message can be worth more than any impressive gift.

Kranar, unless you know what she wears (like..if she wears perfume, what kind of scent would you say it is? Floral, spicy, strong, soft) ..the ladies who told you it's a bad idea otherwise is right, because body chemistry is KEY (I sold perfume and cologne for a while, so this is actually something I have experience in) so..unless you can answer my first questions pretty positively, I'd steer clear. Light scents such as DKNY (which I wear) may smell soft and light (it does on me) but you put it on someone else, and it smells like BODY ODOR. Other scents that are pretty strong and overpowering, like Liz Taylor's line...White Diamonds and Black Pearls...smell really delicate on some people...but like toilet water on others (like me)

If you're looking to spend in the $40-$50 dollar range, I'd go with earrings..or a nice watch. Fossil, Guess have nice watches out right now (I just got back from looking at some) ..a few might be a tad over $50, but only 5-10 bucks more...something to think about.

Let us know what you wind up getting!

Try remembering some of her hobbies and/or interests.

I get annoyed with those gifts that are like "HEY, YOU'RE A GUY. YOU MUST LIKE <INSERT CLICHE THING> HERE.", and I'm sure the ladies get tired of getting perfume, jewelry, etc. that doesn't fit their taste.

Last Christmas, I bought a friend of mine a print from her favorite artist that had been signed/numbered by him, because I remembered her ranting and raving about the guy. I was in.

I totally agree with Backlash.. Gift baskets from Bath & Body works are great! If you know she likes a certain scent, you can get a candle, body wash, soap, lotion, etc.. in that scent.. or get a mix of all the popular scents or something if you're unsure of what she'd like. I've gotten them before, and they arent crazy expensive, and have always gone over great.

Get her a small bottle (half ounce) of essential oil of lavender. Not "lavendin" but "lavender."

It's light, natural (so if she's allergic to synthetic perfumes it won't bother her at all), can be diluted or used right out of the bottle, has a soothing affect on the mind, and can also be very handy as a first-aid liquid to heal 1st and 2nd degree burns.

I often wear it all by itself, just a single drop on the wrists and I'm good to go.

Plus even the most expensive brand (Tisserand or Oshadi) is only around $30 for a half ounce. Cheaper brands start at around $10 for that size. Go for the good stuff though, there's a HUGE difference in scent.

That applies for anything. With the Axe spray, I usually just do a quick spray on my chest, and with cologne, I usually just do one spray into my hand and smack it on my neck.

Bestatte, is there anything like that for guys? I was actually looking at some perfume oils the other day and the thought sprang into my head. Something with an earthy tone would be best.

Vetiver (also spelled vetivert) is an awesome earthy oil. It's used diluted, because in its natural form it's extremely thick and more like a sap than an oil (comes from a tree). It's considered a great "base note" in some perfumes and goes good with bergamot - which is the primary note in the original "Cologne."

Cologne finds its roots in a single product that was made from vodka, bergamot, and I believe sandalwood, among other things. It was used as an aftershave, a deodorant, and in some cases, as an appertif after dinner in a long-stemmed shotglass.

In any case, my expertise doesn't run much into synthetics, only natural essential oils. If the product you're looking at says "Perfume oil" or "Scented oil" or "Fragrance oil" on the bottle, it's synthetic.

Vetiver and bergamot mixed with either grain alcohol or vodka (since the most exquisite "true" perfumes are made with these dilutants). I believe the Body Shop has a combination like this already pre-mixed. Very masculine and not overwhelming, plus because it's natural you won't offend anyone allergic to synthetics.

Oh and GSLeoo (sorry can't remember your name, I'm pasting someone else's post :) )

I'm an aromatherapist. That's how come I know so much about lavender. It was on my final exam for my certification - I had to diagram the chemical compounds of Lavendula alternifolia and discuss the primary chemotype (it's a massive phenol compound) and its affects on the skin and central nervous system. Gotta love organic chemistry!

The road to hell is paved with good intentions...

A girly gift basket from Victoria's Secret sounds like the best idea so far.
Bath and Body works is a good bet too. Find out a scent she likes. If that's not possible, ask one of the people who work there for help.

I didn't mean that to sound as abrasive as it did. I just knew that they seperated black and white frats for whatever reason, so I figured there might be an Asian group or two.

Okay I'm going with either a watch or a glass figurine.

Figure I can't go wrong with either of them and it won't give any wrong impression.

Go with the figure if you're only spending $50.

That is probably the hardest I've laughed today.

Any bets on who else will get that joke?

Edaarin were you trying to join the Yakuza again?

Kranar,
Go with a figurine if that's what you're thinking. But honestly a gift basket doesn't send any weird/heavy vibes.

For my wife's birthday this year I took her up to Chicago for the weekend, took her shoping, did some sight seeing, nice resturants, etc. You could mimic that but my guess is that would send out the stalker vibe since you're just friends

Woo Kranar! If you're gonna go for the figurine, check out the Lladro collection. They're bisque porcelain, hand-crafted in Spain, and drop-dead gorgeous.

Most of them are very expensive, but you can get a little cat or dog for around $25 if I remember right. They are high-end collectables.

I got a bride/groom one for my cousin's wedding cake as their shower gift, and it set me back $85 USD. They started collecting them after that and now have over a dozen Lladros.

There's even a medieval castle Lladro, but that bad boy goes for over $10,000.

Ramba Ramba Ramba!!

Fucking brilliant!

There was an Asian fraternity started at my college, but it was not part of the inter fraternity council, so we never did anything with them. The president was a nice guy, but the rest were, well, kinda how you described them Edaarin.

By the way, who else was in a frat?

Kranar, don't get a watch. I'm serious. You migth think it's harmless, but it's not. There are issues of wearing jewelry that touches a whole bunch of buttons that we as men will never fully understand. I bought a girlfriend of three months a Fossil watch, and she flipped. It was like $95... not a big deal at all. But, to her, it was still "Jewelry".

I apologize in advance for the bump.

Does anyone know who makes the men's scent Catalyst? I loooove that smell.

A good perfume for a woman is White Musk by the Body Shop, it's very subtle.

I'll have the answer for you tomorrow when I go to work. We sell Catalyst there. It's decent.

My favorites are Envy by Guuci and CK B by Calvin Klein. Pleasures isn't bad but my friend wears that so I can't rock the same scent as him.

You should check out Envy the womens love it.

Heh, I'm not real proud to admit this, but I stole Curve from my best friend, and under the same rules, he couldn't wear the same thing. Was a good choice, though....He did alright without it.

Love you Jolena!

Yeah she liked it. Much to my surprise she has a collection of these glass figurines, so this one fit in nicely.

Like I said, nothing was supposed to be intimate about this.

Thanks for the advice to you all.

I am sure next time I have to get a gift for a girl I will be returning here. If only it weren't so complicated!

Glad to hear she liked the gift, Kranar. It was a real bonus to find she actually had a collection into which this gift would fit! :)

I hate girls that say 'yummy'.

All I can picture are fat british girls with pasty skin and bad teeth...

Sexy Graphfetti (not sure on the spelling, obviously) My daughter loves it, but its difficult to find. Try Sephora.com.

I always wear the same scents Tresor and Chole mixed together. It smells wonderful on me, but like many have mentioned, scent is indiviual.

Well hate me then longshot. Who cares if someone says "yummy". I'm not british, fat, have pasty skin or have bad teeth. But, I do say yummy ;)

P.S. I meant to say Aqua di Gorgio, heh.
