View Full Version : Gym Time

So I decided to get back into my morning routine. I'm not at the gym at 4:45 every morning and I've gotta say I love it. Keep in mind I belong to a gym that's open 24/7

1. No one is there to be in my way.

2. Wakes me up and gets me going for the day.

3. No one is there to be in my way.

4. It frees up my nights to be with the wife more.

5. No one is there to be in my way.

I get there, get a good pump, cardio, hit the hot tub for 20 minutes, shower and I'm at work by 7 it's great.

What is your favorite/ best time to get your swell on and why?

When I went regularly this summer, I never picked a particular time. It was almost always after about 5 though. Latest I went was like 11. I went to a 24 gym too, so I could do that.

I miss it. :(

We lift after practice, it's a really good routine to lift hard after hard pliometrics or sprint workouts.

During the off-season (summer), I would run to the dome (our gym) at the hottest possible time of the day just to get a good sweat. Do squats, cleans, calf-raises, run back. That was a really good routine.

The gym I belong to sucks!

It opens at 9:00 in the morning! What kind of fucking gym opens at 9:00!

And get this... you have to pay 200 dollars to join. Then, it's another $80 a month PLUS $2 every time you use it. (Or, for the frequent user, you can get an unlimited monthly pass for $20! What a deal, eh?)

The heaviest dumbell is 20kg, or around 45 pounds.

The equipment is archaic.

And there's loads of 85 pound Japanese guys on staff to give you "Pointers" on how to work out.

I'm almost in tears now...

I have to stop writing.

When I used to work out, it was 7 days a week, usually late afternoon or right after work. Plus I had physical therapy twice a week that included hydrotherapy and isolated exercises. I alternated the routine; three days a week I'd work limbs, 3 days on back and abdominals, and one day strictly calesthenics and aerobics.

Plus three days a week I did a 10-mile bicycle ride once I finished with physical therapy.

Once the degenerative disk disease set in, I had to stop most of it, though I still like riding my bike in nice weather and live only a mile of the coffee shop so I can walk there and back. I try to keep up with upper arm strength and stomach crunches, but the damage to my back makes it pretty tough to get back into any kind of routine.

What are your favorite body parts to work?

Shoulders: My shoulders are getting huge and I love to blast them. The weight I'm starting to toss around on my shrugs and military press is just scary.

Triceps: Work bi's all you want if you want big arms you need big tri's. I've got 17.5 inch arms thanks to my tri workout. I can now cable press 225 for a good set, and skull crush 135 for a good set. I love gettin the horse shoe.

I'm doing alot of rucking. Usually go every day-every other day (when i'm not lazy like yesterday)

Got my self up to an 65 pound ruck up to about 12 miles easily.

My 4-mile time is around 45- 50 minutes with it on. I think i'm gonna try out for SF around march if i can stay healthy at this pace.

I have the same thing, so I am doing physical therapy. If you don't keep doing back strength excercises it will get worse faster. Strong muscles keep the disks secure longer.

Before my back surgery I rode my bike 3x a week, did strength and toning excercises on the days I wasn't horse back riding, which I did 4+ times a week.

Now I ride my bike and wait for the day my doctor says I'm allowed within 50 yards of my horse.

I go 5 days a week. I was really overweight for a while, now I'm getting down to where I want to be. I do spinning classes, pilates, and weight training.

I have to kick it up a bit during the holidays, so I don't gain anything back.

My prefrence is just after I wake up. Whenever that is. (Used to work nights) I just feel that much more motivated and energetic through the rest of the day. For some reason, to me it feels like doing it just before bed is a waste. This patently untrue however. I guess, for me, by the end of the day the last thing I want to do is exert myself any more than I have to.

My routine, which I learned from one of the staff memebers at my last gym, is half an hour of cardio (heart rate 150, prefer the bike), cool down, then upper and lower body reps. If I'm running late, Just upper. My legs have always been in pretty good shape.

We have a really nice gym at my job, state of the art, new everything. Now if I would just haul my ass in there, that would be perfect.

I didn't work out much except for when we had to for basketball practice...(I don't play anymore..so I don't) Running was my thing...I actually enjoy running more than working out. I don't know why, but I enjoyed the runner's high much more than the after workout feeling. I think my old basketball coach drove me crazy...anyway, my favorite time to run is the evening...dusk time, right before it gets dark. For a while I was running at the crack of dawn, and it depressed me.

This is totally off topic but.. I figured it's a gym topic so maybe someone would have some advice.

So my friend is like.. 200 pounds or more, she's 5"4... And she eats like.. a king sized meal.. of say french fries, the huge soda, chicken wings, and then she gets a double hamburger and a frostee to go with it Just for lunch.

So now she comes up to me and says she's so upset cause she's going to the gym (for like one hour and three times a week at the most) and is seeing no results and I'm just like... I'm in shock because how can she not see that it's how she's eating? And I'm saying we'll get back to the school and she'll then buy a thing of cookies and start eating that...

So what do I tell her? I mean with how she eats, how long is she going to have to spend at the gym to take it all off? Anyone have any advice for her? I'm her friend, is it really my place to say anything?

Back
11-11-2003, 06:32 PM
If she is 5'4" and over 200 pounds, its not just what or how much she is eating. There is something else going on.

Friends tell friends when there is something in their teeth, or a boogie hanging from their nose. If you're that close, I'd suggest she seek counseling

GSLeloo
11-11-2003, 06:55 PM
Well see.. she was 200 once before, her parents hired personal trainers and a physician and had her down to 150. Well, it's about a year and a half or so later and she's 200 again.. or more cause she got off the scale before I it balanced.

So the thing is... if she's happy, who am I to say anything? Can I really say it's wrong if she's happy? At the same time I do know it's very unhealthy for her to be that heavy.

AnticorRifling
11-11-2003, 08:00 PM
Exercise alone doesn't cut it. Diet is a huge part of it.

Diet is what kicks my ass. I eat what I want when I want just as long as I get my alotted protien in for the day. Chocolate doesn't help my workout but I love it so I smash on chocolate all day.

Hitting the gym is a good first step but you've gotta have more than one step forward to consider it walking.

If she is happy let her be happy.

11-11-2003, 08:07 PM
I eat what i damn well please.

GSLeloo
11-11-2003, 08:09 PM
Still.... she's 17, 200lbs... she eats horribly! I mean... yeah she's happy but guess what, she could also kill herself. Being fat is unhealthy.

11-11-2003, 08:15 PM
So tell her fat ass to stop eating.

When you see her chowing down like a somalian at a free buffet say "Hey, don't you think that third double cheesburger is really unncessary"?

GSLeloo
11-11-2003, 08:17 PM
The problem is she'll be like... "Oh I'm so fat. If I keep eating like this I'm going to get fat" and it's like, you already are. But how can I insult her? We once went to the mall and she had ice cream, a pretzel, and a cinnabon and then we went out to dinner and she had an appetizer, a big meal, and a frozen shake for dessert.... I mean.. I just don't know what to do. She can't lose weight until she decides to.

11-11-2003, 08:20 PM
Then stop worrying about your obese friend. Shes grown enough to realize that shes a freakin whale. Just for a little point of reference. I'm about 200 pounds...but i'm also 6'4.

Nothing else you can do. Same reason those stupid kids got fat from eating McDonalds every day. One Big Mac has something like 30 grams of saturated fat. I don't eat that much saturated fat in 3 days.

On a side note to Weedmage: he may suck now, but at the end of the year, he's made this much money

$5625000

I will now shoot myself.

Just for kicks, here are some other salaries that make me question the way society works.

Keith Van Horn $13,279,750

Allan Houston $15,937,500 (WTF, he's not even one of the top 10 shooting guards in his fucking conference)

Shandon Anderson $6,700,000
Charlie Ward $6,030,000
Howard Eisley $5,843,750
Clarence Weatherspoon $5,445,600
Travis Knight $4,400,000

Those aren't typo's. The Knicks actually shelled out $30M for 5 guys that wouldn't even crack the lineup for 50% of the rest of the league. God damn it, I'd be a better fucking GM than Scott Layden...

I understand athletes work hard and make big sacrifices (well some of them do, not all of them) but when you have someone making $25 million bucks a year...versus doctors who also make HUGE sacrifices and make what..$100,000-$200,000 a year...there's some issues.

They do make their sacrifices but there are other professions who are way more deserving than they are...and I don't think there's ANY job that's worth those kind of millions. But that's society for you. *shrugs*

If the salaries didn't reach that high, and say capped at a couple of million, I still think they'd play on a competitive level.

But people want to be entertained..so they're going to shell out the cash. That's just the way it is.

They do deserve what they get paid. Most people judge them, saying they get paid to play a game. In a sense they do, but to be a professional athlete you have to dedicate a hell of a lot more time than just playing in a game. Take a hockey player for instance, one coming up through the American system. The player starts out playing house hockey (or local teams), then they move to travel if they are good enough. From travel players will get to Midgets and Juniors, roughly age 15 for midgets and 17 for juniors. At this age they generally move away from home considering 'good' hockey isn't in every city. I doubt you moved away from your friends and family when you were, say 16 years old. To live with a strange family, in a new city, going to a new school. Now figure this player has a 2 to 3 hour on-ice practice every day he doesn't have a game, then off-ice practice 3 to 4 times a week. Thats another hour to hour and a half in a gym or on the track. Then add film once or twice a week that could be as short as 30 minutes or as long as 2 hours each time. Now figure that as an average 11-15 hours a week in just practice, if the player is in high school at the same time they're doing 6-7 hours of school a day. So while you're working your 9-5 (8 hours) they're working anywhere from 9 to 12 hours a day, and thats without doing homework. Try doing this starting your freshman year in high school, and if you dedicate yourself long enough, then through another 4 years in college, where you’re adding the practice time on to 3 to 4 hours of class a day, and at some schools the mandatory 2 hour a day study lab time. Now during the summer while all the other kids are out screwing around, you're in the gym Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 9am. to Noon, and every Wednesday you're either biking, running sprints or pushing the sled for an hour and a half. Then in the afternoon you hit the ice for another hour. In order to be a successful athlete you literally throw away a lot of the ‘time’ that everyone else has. So until you’re sacrificing that much of your time, and during the years when you have the most freedom, please don’t complain about how much they get paid.

11-11-2003, 09:24 PM
Hence the reason i quit sports in HS. and school for that matter.

True, Carl, but like I said..there are other professions out there who make just as much of a sacrifice..if not more.

What about doctors? When they're in medical school, they're busting their asses...then when they graduate..and have to do their residencies (not sure if that's the right term I'm using) ...they're seperated from their families, pulling these outrageous shifts. Some of them work 36 hours straight...there's no "breaks" or things of the like, either. They're always on the go, and HAVE to keep alert..anything can happen at anytime. They're on call. There's no "Off season." When the pager goes off, no matter what they're doing...they must drop it and head to the hospital.

Again, I understand the sacrifices...but they're not the only ones, and again, certainly not worth $25 million.

I never said doctors were underpaid. But do doctors entertain people? No one has fun at the doctors office. No one has fun in surgery. Why would they want to pay money to have someone who thinks he's smarter than you slice you open with a knife. No thanks.

I believe doctors are great, and obviously they are essential but they don't bring revenue in to a city, or a school. In fact doctors and hospitals are cocksuckers for overcharging for services. All because insurance companies let it happen. So in the end they can't be classified as any better. And a doctor may be gone for 24 hours, where as an athlete may leave his family at his home town and keep a house in the city he plays in. Only making it home a few days a month during the season. Or for athletes who live with their family, they can be gone up to 2 weeks at a time on a road trip. So don't tell me doctors are away from their families more.

This thread got a little off topic, lol.

Anyway Leloo, definitly say something. It's what friends are for, and it's not like you're forcing the issue if she keeps making comments.

As far as what I do, I just got some weights in my basement, bench press, curl bar, dumbells, and this machine my parents use which is ok for shoulders and back stuff.

Weight wise I'm trying to gain weight constantly, it's like impossible though for me. I'm 5'10" 145, lol. I try to eat like 3k calories a day, I lift, I drink whey protein, and 10 minutes before I go to sleep each night I eat a thing of easy pasta, without the sauce, and a can of tuna in it. That's in addition to 3k calories. I guess I'll just gain weight slowly as I get older, I'm only 19.

Anticor, that gym is the only game in town. I have so many fitness stories about Japan...

My favorite was the old man who decided to take a nap on the peck deck. Nobody would wake him up either, because he is older and should be respected. He's lucky I was doing legs or he would have got the boot...

They have a thing here called "Calorie Mate" that people eat when they are hungry. I was drinking a myoplex at work, and someone I work with asked why I don't just eat a Calorie Mate. I explained that when 70% of the calories come from fat, it's not exactly a healthy choice. I pointed them to the nutrition label, and he didn't understand it. He's Japanese, and the label was written in Japanese.

I also like the guy who does three curls with a 10 pound weight, and then throws imaginary fast balls into the mirror after.

One of the really funny things about living here is that almost everything is done for you. You are supposed to defer all decisions and responsibilty to someone older than you. People just assume everything is safe. That is why the Chinese come over here and steal everything so easily on their tourist visas. People will leave the keys to their brand new lexus in the car with the engine running while they go into a store.

I bring this up because traditionally, the Japanese diet has been really healthy. Nobody really thinks about the food they eat. Now, that's different... McDonalds, KFC, and mayonaisse like you've never seen before are part of most diets. People here are beginning to get fat, but they have NO CLUE about nutrution at all. If food wasn't three times as expensive as it is in the US, I seriously think they could take the US as the fattest people on the planet. It's still in its infant stages, but it's really beginning to show. They are genetically dispositioned to diabetes as well.

If you want to help her so badly, go talk to her and advise her that continuing her current eating habits is unhealthy and that she should change it and offer your support.

Either you're the biggest hypocrite in the world, or your just not real good at motivating people. As I've pointed out before, your loved one is a fucking beast.

Could you share your motivating tips to get her to put the pizza down?

And before you pull out the, "You're an asshole crap", Please remember that--

1. Nobody likes you here.
2. Everyone hates Atheana here

I might be vulgar, but I speak the truth.

"I also like the guy who does three curls with a 10 pound weight, and then throws imaginary fast balls into the mirror after. "

ROFL. True, non-Americanised (And even the Asians who are somewhat assimilated into American society, but still do things that are odd) Asians are hysterical, their mannerisms and shit make me laugh so hard. I'd laugh all day if I lived in Japan.

LoL

Sad longshot.

You talk to ellicit response. I'm not as hated as you seem to think. Just give it up.

There's your response, buddy.
Enjoy it. It's the last one you'll get from me.

ON another note..

I took your advice, Longshot...seeming as how I look like a crack head and all...and went to the gym

I started on Monday. I don't have a trainer or anything so I'm kinda just doing it on my own here.

What I do is this. Don't laugh, either, because I am just starting. :P

3 sets of 10 reps each on the bench press at 80 pounds.(shh!) I could lift more, but I was told to start small.
3 sets of 10 on the pectoral thing(not quite sure what it's called) I'm thinking I set the weights at 60 for that.
3 sets of 10 on the bicep curls at 50.
and 3 sets of 10 on the leg curls at 40.

So, anyone have any suggestions? After that work out, I was feeling pretty good. That feeling is incentive enough to go back.

edited to add: This morning when I woke up my arms and chest were in agony. That's supposed to happen, though, right?
I hope they feel a little better when I go to the gym at 4.

Yeah, you're supposed to feel it the next day.. Drinking whey protein will help your muscles rejuvenate quicker.

You say ya do 50 for curls, I'm guessing it's 50 for both arms, not a 50 in each arm?

Yes, 50 with both arms. I could never hope to curl 50 with one arm. Not yet anyways. Is it better to do one arm at a time?

Kinda wanted to stick to the cable weight machine and not mess with the free weights. Just to start out, anyways.

So you are supposed to feel pain afterwards? That's good to know. I thought I might be doing it wrong.

edited to add a question.

I'm going to be nice to you, so feel special.

First of all... you should break your workout up. If you're doing full body, then do upper body one day, legs the next. Your muscles need the day to rebuild, especially when you first start. This is also why people who only do upper body don't work out every day. It's bad for you.

I suggest you expand your upper-body workout to include back and shoulders, if you're going for overall fitness.

Also.. you're obviously aiming for strength, not toning... so I'd suggest lowering the reps and upping the weights. Try 100 or 110 on bench press. About 4 sets of 6-8 reps on a weight that's challenging for you is good for what you want.

For legs... 40 is nothing. Even you can do better than that. Again, do heavier weights, less reps. Your legs will almost always be able to do more than your upper body. It's like a biological thing. I can leg press over twice what I can bench press.

Um... that's all I can think of right now. Oh, and don't forget to drink lots and lots of water while working out.

Not necessarily. Alternating with weights in each hand or doing one arm at a time... it doesn't really matter. The alternating will raise your heart rate a bit more, helping to improve endurance, but beyond that it's up to you.

Kinda wanted to stick to the cable weight machine and not mess with the free weights. Just to start out, anyways.

Even though you'll be able to do less weight on free weights, they are MUCH better for you. They work all the stabalizing muscles and make for a more balanced muscle growth.

Hell yes you should feel pain. For the first couple weeks after you start, you'll feel it after every workout. When you stop feeling it, it's time to up your weights that you're using. Your body is a good indicator for how fast you should progress.

Thanks much for the advice, Tayre.

Had to take a few notes.

I'll try the free weights today when I go over there.

What I think I'll do is switch to the lower amount of reps with more weight today and then give my upper body a rest and start on the leg stuff tomorrow.

One more question, though. What should I add for back and shoulders?

Should do something for your abs too... Bicycles are good, lay on your back and do crunches, but bring your elbow across your body, and kick your legs like you're peddling a bike, taking your right elbow to your left knee etc...
