Who has what around here? I've decided it's time to shop for one to replace my aged 9800pro. I have a brand new Radeon X1650pro sitting in the closet that I got for some gift but personally I think it blows and will be returning it.

You think a 512 MB ATI video card sucks...?

What?

Good recent article on video cards:

has them broken down into different price ranges.

Compared to alternatives.. yes. The benchmarks are awful.

Yeah I read Tom's almost daily as well as a few other sites. I was more hoping to hear about anyone's personal experiences here.

I don't buy into benchmark ratings. My Radeon X800GT looked and performed a lot better than other brands and models that were supposedly superawesome. I never played a game on less than 1280x1024 with full graphical detail, but the benchmark was mediocre at best.

If you're not an ATI guy, and therefore don't mind spending more money, go for the GeForce 8800GTX. It shows incredible numbers.

I'm normally an ATI guy.. but can't swallow the reviews on this 1650. I take benchmarks for what they are but this card just gets destroyed by others in the mid range.

Why? I mean you're sherking the X1650 Pro based purely on it's benchmarks, so someone saying "I have a whatever and it's great!" doesn't really help.

I have a mobile graphics card and it was more than adequate enough to run oblivion at some insanely high resolution, so I think any card you get is going to be good.

I wasn't looking for "I have a whatever and it's great!".. I was looking for OTHER tech heads to chime in on their experiences with their card on a more complicated level.

I've just got the chance to return this fairly quickly and get something else up to the $250 range.

I can't recall what I have on my desktop, but I'm thinking it's time for a whole new setup. I have a 24" monitor and when I play Might and Magic V, with video on high settings, the freaking lights dim in my house and it totally bogs down. I'm thinking it's combo video card and CPU (think it's a P4 600 or something). Either way, I don't want to build a PC, so whats a good over the counter for less than 2k sans monitor? I want the best I can get for that money.
