We owe Kranar a big round of applause for all but anihilating the spam bots! There for awhile, they were swarming like flies. Kranar put in a fix and there are very few (like one, so far) that are getting through now.

Thanks again, boss! :)

Good job!

Though I suppose you handled them well enough I didn't notice them. What exactly were they doing? Just posting nonsense posts or what?

You didn't notice them because staff(read that as mostly HN) was on the ball and deleting them asap.

And the posts were for everything you get spam emails about...Viagra....mortgages....Porn....etc....

From what I can gather from other board administrators, the bots have been thwarted, to a large degree, from getting to you through email so they've taken to spamming forums like ours. They've been a real problem for a couple of months now. :(

Not all posts that advertise are bots, unfortunately. We can't stop them all no matter how hard we try, any more than you can guarantee that you won't receive spam emails by turning on spam-controls in your email program. However, the fix Kranar put in has cut down on the problem in a big way. Handling the occasional spam post isn't near as much of a hassle as trying to catch and delete ten or more a day, which is what some forums found themselves facing. :scared:

What was annoying was that the company that makes the forum software were pretty adamant that the forums were bot-proof up until recently.

There are several bots, however, that target the vBulletin forums standard registration process. There has been a huge barrage of these bots attacking forums. By modifying the registration process slightly, the bots are thrown off from the PC, for now anyways.
