MADRID, Spain -- A 67-year-old Spanish woman became the world's oldest mother after she gave birth to twins in the northern city of Barcelona on Saturday, a hospital official said.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed by Sant Pau hospital, gave birth by caesarian section on Saturday having previously undergone in vitro fertilization in the United States, according to the national news agency EFE.

Originally from the southern region of Andalucia, the new mother chose the Barcelona hospital because it specializes in high-risk births.

The mother and twins are all doing well though the babies are both in incubators, a hospital spokeswoman said. The hospital did not reveal the gender of the twins.

The previous holder of the oldest mother record was 66-year-old Romanian citizen Adriana Iliescu who gave birth to baby Eliza Maria in Jan. 2005.

While I think it's possible that this woman can be a good mother for the remaining years of her life I do not see how this can be viewed as anything other than a very selfish act on her part and exceedingly questionable ethics on the part of the physician who performed the procedure.

I have to totally agree with Skirmisher. My mom is that age and she's incredibly active still with lots of outdoors activities. But there's no way I can imagine her doing an adequate job of raising children. Plus it doesn't take much for things to change dramatically at that age. My mom aged a lot this last year when it wasn't nearly as evident in prior years, so even for people in good shape who look younger than they are, it can sneak up suddenly. Those children are guaranteed to not have the benefit of a fully able parent and to actively put them in that position is reprehensible.
