I JUST SAW CORNEL WEST SPEAK IN MY LAW SCHOOL WITHOUT ME EVEN KNOWING ABOUT IT AND I SHOOK HIS HAND AND SPOKE TO HIM AND HE SIGNED SOMETHING FOR ME....

Wow...I can't even speak. The man made we weep with joy.

<<who?>>

<<Who?>>

Old black guy.

That's pretty sweet, though, TheE. Ex-Harvard professors are always cool guys to talk to.

<<Who?>>

THE Old black guy.

Fixed it for you. He spoke at my school a couple years back and we got out of class so we could hear him speak. I went out drinking.

FUCKING CORNEL WEST.

He's only the greatest Black Theologian ever. One of the most important theologians of the 20th and so far the 21st century. Amazing.

And yes, he has a giant fro.

And he was actually in the Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions as the old black member of the Council of Zion, because the Wachowski brothers loved his theology so much they sent the script to him to see if he had any contention with it, and he was so intrigued he opened a dialogue with them about it....and then they invited him for a cameo!!!

Holy shit. My heart's still racing.

So wait... it's clear you didn't use the multiquote tool, but I find it particuarly odd that you copied each reply, despite them being the same, you maintained the case...

I was going to say "Who?" but then I just googled him... then I thought someone should make a website WHOogle, where you just type a name into it... but the site is taken and it's blank... I thought I was clever :(

What's black got to do with it? Second of all GREAT and Theologian do not work in the same sentence.

Well, there would be argument as to whether he's the best theologian of the 20th century. But he's certainly the best black theologian of the 20th century. And, a lot of his subject matter, in fact, his specialty, is "black theology".

He seems pretty kewl.

Although most people don't know chickens as well as they know cats and dogs, chickens are interesting individuals with personalities and interests every bit as developed as the dogs and cats with whom many of us share our lives.

Almost made me feel guilty about BBQ.

Almost.

I thought the name sounded familiar.

Not only did Cornel West cameo in the movies, he and Ken Wilber did the Philosophical Commentary for the trilogy. He had some very intriguing ideas about the movies. I'd be interesting in listening to him talk live sometime.

A poster boy for affirmative action's downside. They sure don't make philosophers like they used to.

TheEschaton

Nah, I actually saw him and met him. I have the affirmative message he wrote for me, and his signature.

As for being a poster boy for affirmative action? What exactly do you mean? That he supports black people in their attempt to be educated? Or that he somehow doesn't deserve the recognition he has?

Because he can run intellectual circles around you, bud, and every single white person I know also.

Luckily, how I feel and what I believe is in no way, shape, or form informed by you, or anyone on this board, for that matter.

Except for Vic. If she stopped loving me, my world would be shattered. Yanno, like when she uses Bone Shatter to SHATTER PEOPLE'S FACES.

I wonder if this mystery guy teaches a pipebomb 101 class on the side.

Ah yes, pipebomb 101, it's a real popular course at Princeton, Skeeter, as it was at Harvard when he was teaching there. ;)

If you knew anything about the man, you know he speaks from, and his whole theology is based on, the standpoint of a hermeneutic of radical love, based on the work of Dr. King. So yes, at times, he speaks in a fired-up manner, but it is based on a foundation of passionate love for his brothers and sisters, black and white (and yellow and red, or whatever).

You don’t even know who the dude is and you start casting terrorist aspersions around. You’re a numbnut.

Skeeter

I have no idea who the guy is. Yet everything leads back to TheE thinking everyone on a plane thinks he's a terrorist. Since everyone on the plane thinks he's a terrorist obviously everyone on a message board should think that too.

Glad I could get you up to speed.

He spoke on the hermeneutic of radical love, and how MLK and Heschel embodied these even in the midst of some of the most violent times, IE, the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam....

...he also talked about the burden of such a love...Heschel was 65 when he died, most coroners said he had the body of a 85 year old, the same with King, was 39 when he died, had the body of a 65 year old in terms of wear and tear...

...and he talked about how such a hermeneutic, by necessity, was focused on death and despair, which was encompassed by love, as a love without an embracing or acknowledging of death and despair was somewhat hollow.

Very fucking cool, TheE. I don't agree with all of his ideologies, but I highly respect his intellect. He's a free thinker, and a provocative scholar and professor in his own right. He's earned his stripes.
