When I looked over most of the new pure caster training plans, what I noticed was that almost all of them have double trained in the Harness Power and/or the various Mana Control abilities. I actually went 1x in HP and MC with my wizard but had about 2.66x training in spells. I've heard people had trouble hunting with only 1x HP. I guess since I have a hunting partner it isn't as much an issue.
I'm not really sure which end is better off considering the excessive TP cost of throwing so many points into garnering some more mana.
Anyway, I did the numbers for wizards singling to double in HP and EMC. It can apply to any caster however the cost for doing either for a wizard are the same. Clerics might be more prone to 2x in SMC since its cheaper and affects Smite/Bane.
Wizard
Level 100
(Lopped off the 1 rank for level 0 since the cap is per level I think)
1x HP = 100 ranks
1x EMC = 100 ranks
300 Mana Total
55 mana per pulse(45 Base Mana + 10EMC)
2xHP = 200 ranks
1x EMC = 100 ranks
400 Mana Total
70 mana per pulse(60 Base Mana + 10 EMC)
1x HP = 100 ranks
2x EMC = 200 ranks
300 Mana Total
65 mana per pulse(45 Base Mana + 20EMC)
1.5x HP = 150 ranks
1.5x EMC = 150 ranks
350 Mana Total
67.5 mana per pulse(52.5 Base mana +15EMC)
1.5x HP = 150 ranks
1x EMC = 100 ranks
350 Mana Total
62.5 mana per pulse(52.5 Base Mana +10EMC)
2x HP = 200 ranks
2x EMC = 200 Ranks
400 Mana Total
80 mana per pulse(60 Base Mana + 20EMC)
Basically, Harness Power overtraining will get you more mana and higher off-node pulses than Mana Control. The trade off for Mana Control over Harness Power is that MC's affect various other spells like Mana Leech and supposedly Charge Item(Smite/Bane for Clerics).
For a wizard going from 1x to 2x in either of the skills will cost 800TP at level 100.
Opportunity cost of 25 tripling in spells.
Opportunity cost of 66 doubled ranks in a lore.
Has anyone done any testing on the effectiveness of lores? Or have they released more specific information that I've missed? Would going 1x or 1.5x be worth the shot to mana for increased spell damage?
