View Full Version : Christmas gifts thread
Every year I am stumped on what to buy friends & family for Christmas. I thought I would start a thread where we could exchange ideas on gifts and perhaps suggestions for each other.
I am stumped as to what to buy my sister for Christmas. She is in her 30's married with a child and currently living in Texas. I was thinking a gift card from Saks cause they deliver. Suggestions?
Christmas is a corporate plot by the christians in power to commercialize and profit off of consumerist faith and good will! Wake up people! Santa Claus DOSEN'T EXIST!

He doesn't? Well, guess I should cancel my luncheon with him on Sunday. Man, that sucks.
Don't have a sister, but if she has a son, go for anything Star Wars. It is hot this year, and will last forever.

Personally I hate giving gift cards, I always feel it is a copout.
Hard to buy a gift for the folks since they are normally under the impression if it is something they need they buy it.

It's awful that listening to Howard Stern all that time has indoctrinated me to automatically hear "Whayt Peyople" after "Wake up"

I think gift cards are a great idea; especially, for those who live far away and you don't see often. With a gift card, you can be assured that the person can get something they really want, or need. :)

LAME.. That's what gift receipts are for. That being said I enjoy best buy and circuit city gift gards.. maybe a lowes or MALL card thrown in as well.

Lowes gift cards are very popular with the males on my gift card list. The gals usually prefer Saks or another department store gift card. I do have one female friend who always gets a Lowes card. She's a Lowes freak! :D

I know it's your sister, but a nice piece of jewelry goes a long way. It depends on your budget, and do NOT get a gift card for jewelry, but a nice necklace or bracelet or even anklet would be a nice gift.
I've never felt that I went wrong when I got jewelry.
Other than that, do you know anything she needs or wants? Like a nice tea set or maybe some nice auroma therapy candles and scents?

Ok, so my b/f wants me to make him something for Christmas WTF should I make him? What would a guy want/ use?
Oh and I agree with Ponzzz, a piece of nice jewelry goes a long way. Yeah, she's your sister, but she'll see that you put a lot of thought and effort in picking something out.

Perhaps a pearl necklace.

Don't forget computer games; I'm grabbing Trainz for my dad because he loves to build things (friggin engineers) and loves trains.
Think about the hobbies of the person you're buying for then try to find a way to give them access to that hobby 24/7. Like in my dad's case, he can't get out of work much to go actually view trains, and my mom hates vacationing unless they fly, so I think he'll be excited about this.
My grandmother is the one that's impossible to buy for. What do you get for the woman that has everything and wakes up each christmas morning to find some gem stuck in a precious setting under her pillow?

Or maybe a scarf?

Your first idea is way better.
I'd hate if a girlfriend made me a scarf. I'd feel obligated to wear it or hide it/destroy it and come up with a backstory.

Lesbian porn.
Or maybe a scarf?
Lesbian porn huh? .... with his sister? :scared:
Hmm...a scarf... I actually considered that, but then had the same thought as Sean, he'd probably want to burn it and then come up with a back story as to why it got destroyed. Too bad he doesn't smoke.
Any other suggestions?

First you need a girlfriend ...
I seriously underestimated the maturity level of some of the posters here when I started this thread. I guess some people can't help themselves.

Man, what's up with dudes h8ing on scarves? I recognize they're hardly lesbian porn, but dang.
Lesbian porn huh? .... with his sister? If he thinks his sister is hot, that could work. I'd imagine cousin or greater separation would be preferable though, you should probably ask.

In all seriousness.. I have a few suggestions.
If it's a woman and she doesn't have allergies to smells/pollon/dust etc (or terrible ones) you can't go wrong with some candles/candle accessories. Places like Yankee Candle sell tons of scents and TONS of nice accessories. They also shrink-wrap and have cool gift boxes for this time of year.
For men.. I always check around online at the online stores of their favorite alcohol brand (if they drink). Usually a few weeks before Christmas they release special drinks/bottles, etc. Right off the top of my head I know Jack Daniels does this and who doesn't love booze, right?
I also frequent places like Things Remembered, which sells nice gifts that are perfect either for corporate/business gifts or for very personalized more formal gifts for family members and loved ones. I got my father a silver money-clip from Things Remembered.. they can engrave it with an image or quote, and then the person's initials and all for free (included in the price of the item). They also can engrave boxes, etc.
For free or very cheap stuff... I like to make gift baskets (or boxes or whatever) with cocoa or tea and home-made cookies and candies. Or other inexpensive things that go well together.. you can find inexpensive baskets at dollar stores as well as ribbons and stuff to dress it up. For you women out there.. and for the men as well, haha.. "coupon" books are always awesome just make sure you make good on those promises ;) Better for couples but still, it's fun and appreciated.
I also make handmade Christmas cards each year.. or you can just buy em from the dollar store but I love holiday stuff so I don't mind making them. I buy white card stock and use my fingers and a red ink-pad to stamp three holly berries and then glue on green card stock holly leaves. I customize the inside too to whoever I send them to. Goes well with a small giftcard too if it's something last minute.
I personally make most of my stuff home-made and get a few nice and expensive gifts. I think that even though the expensive WOW I LOVE IT gifts are really great and mean a lot to people.. there's something nice about knowing that the person who handmade or put together something for you did it thinking about you. I always treasure my homemade stuff and appreciate the person who did it.. I can only hope someone feels the same about my stuff. Or maybe it's just my arts-and-crafts mother having worn off on me, haha. We always made Christmas baskets and presents and cards together as kids and it's something I try to keep alive and hope to eventually one day do with my family. I want Christmas to mean more than just presents.. to myself, and to my (future) family.
ANYWAY I have rambled on and probably not been very helpful but there you have it. My suggestions, take em or leave em!

Usually, you can't go wrong with a gift card. I would get her one to a place where she would be sort of forced to spend it on herself, just because moms and wives can tend to put themselves last sometimes. But I would add a personal touch to it just so it doesn't come off as one of those 'I had to get something but didn't know what to get so um here' type of gifts.
You could find a favorite or funny picture of the two of you as kids and have it framed. Write a note in your own style and words - just a little something to let her know you really thought of her when you did this and you want her to choose something nice for herself because she deserves it.
Otherwise, you could always go for one of those velvet posters of dogs playing poker or an incredibly, amazingly tacky cookie jar. Just something so ridiculous that she'll laugh over it and always remember it. My worstest ever received gifts are some of the greatest just because they still make me smile.

I'd get your sister a giftcard to a local spa with a masseuse package of some sort included. Any mother would greatly appreciate that time away from the kiddo(s), and it provides a relaxation that she probably needs.
