Hey, not going, but since I followed the vegascon link, i went to check out the frontier place.. The website lists rooms at $45 per night rather than $110 like your VC site says.

edit: And they will match any lower price you can find/prove.

Did a quick check and it says "Rooms as low as $44.95 per night". This generally means that you can get a room during the slower part of the week (the middle) for cheaper than you can during the weekend. When I checked a Friday to Saturday stay, the cheapest room was $155.

Looks like this year is going to be pretty big, if everyone who goes who says they are.:)

Fun, fun.

Last year we had about 85, the biggest year I've attended there have been about 110-120ish people there.

To further clarify your question, Aesthetic Death, February/March is probably one of the most expensive times to be in Las Vegas. The weather is extremely mild and people just got their tax refunds, so they're ready to spend money. Lots of conventions book this time a year (I'm not talking about small-time cons like ours, I'm talking about 5,000+ attendees), which puts hotel space at a premium. Add the Nascar events in and it's not exactly the time everyone is steering clear.

If Simutronics continues to dismiss Simucon (as they did in '06 and appear to be doing for '07), I plan to try and gradually shove the Vegascon date closer to the summer. This will result in fairly cheaper room rates and more pool time.

Below is a cut-and-paste of the post I made on the officials regarding the search for an appropriate hotel (this will be Year 4 at the Frontier).

Dates will be Feb 28 - March 4. Feb 28th is a Wednesday, but we had such a good early turnout last year I figured I'd just stick that in there. The "official" con stuff won't start until Thursday, but we WILL have the same hospitality suite this year as we did last year. That means it's at The Frontier again. I know The Frontier isn't the most posh place in town, but I looked (I really did!) a lot of other places to see what our options were. Here's a breakdown of what I found:

Tropicana: $129/night, no hospitality suite, required to book meeting space.
Imperial Palace: $129/night, no hospitality suite, required to book meeting space.
Treasure Island: $145/night, no hospitality suite, no meeting space available.
Gold Coast: $100/night, no hospitality suite, booking meeting space at $500/8-hour block.
The Palms: $229/night, hospitality suite at $1000/night.

I don't know what the deal is with other places playing dumb on the hospitality suite. My conversations went something like this:

Me: "We need a hospitality suite as part of our room block for a place to gather and socialize."
Them: "What are you going to do in there?"
Me: "Socialize, play cards, talk."
Them: "Well, our biggest suite can only accomodate 10, maybe 15 people. You definitely can't have 60 people in there."
Me: "We don't all want to sleep there, we just need a place to gather."
Them: "No, you can't do that. Security will come kick you out."

Of course, The Palms has suites specifically for these activities, which is why I talked to them. Aside from the room rate being ridiculously high, and the rate for the suite being out of reach, the lady advised me that we would NOT be allowed to bring in any of our own stuff. So instead of buying kegs from Leon at $150-ish apiece, I'd have to buy them from The Palms for $500 apiece. Prohibitive! The same rules applied for any place that we'd book meeting space - if we use their room, we have to use their food/bev.

The room rates at The Frontier will fall at $110/night, and as we all know, they have no problem letting us haul in our own booze, kegs, jello shots, aardvarks... not to mention how cool they were with the 2am hottub party last year. Signups will be open on the website soon, and will be $45 until the cutoff date (not determined yet) and double the price thereafter.

Returning activities will be the jello shot party, the pub crawl, the pizza party, the raffle, and an IMPROVED and HARDER scavenger hunt (I guess I went too easy on you guys last time!)

Edits to above (since it was a cut and paste)... signups ARE open on the website and will close February 8th. If you don't sign up either on the website or via paypal with me by then, the signup price doubles. No exceptions, and everyone is required to register. Kthx!

I'd like to think I have an extremely good handle on how casino security works, and which buttons to push to get what I want. If anyone becomes a problem or attempts to make things difficult, I'll have no problem having them tossed. It's really ridiculously easy to get yourself thrown out of a casino.

I did promise myself one Con though.

Take 'em with you. Nothing like Vegas to make your kids either love you forever, or hate you for slightly longer.
