Man I so needed this four day weekend. It could not have come at a better time for me because things at work have sucked and things here at home have kinda sucked. Four days off including a day just to chill and enjoy family, friends and food along with remembering no matter how bad I think things are for me that there is a wealth of good things to recognize is just the thing to settle my spirit.

We are deep frying a turkey this year. From a local free range farm of course. I get to do the honors even though I am not the head of the household it will be performed at. Should be quite an event.

Looks like it might be rainy here but that just enhances the warmth of being indoors. Last year I remember it actually snowed.

Good times. Hope you all have a good one.

I hear deep fried turkeys are really, really good. Never had one, though.

They are SUPER good. Just if you can get away with it, find a way to fry it OUTSIDE as that pot is huge and the grease goes EVERYWHERE....

Cept, if you're a crispy skin fan like me...you wont want to eat this, it has the consistancy of stale cornflakes. :(

They are. The outside skin and inner flesh is seared shut by the hot oil, leaving the turkey meat extremely juicy.

Best wishes of safety and happiness to all (even non-USA and non-celebrating folks) this Thanksgiving.

Lots of safety precautions to consider when you deep fry one at home. Research is recommended.

Also keep the super heated grease away from the rain.

I deep fry a turkey at random tailgaiting events. Highly dangerous mind you but pretty good tasting and great for football games. I'm am le roasting the turkey this year for a change and can't wait to get bloated and watch some football.

Lol. Those are good links.

I may be a jackass but I’m not a hillbilly. Turkey frying 101.

Probably not a good idea to drop a rock solid frozen turkey in your dutch oven filled with 500 degree oil in your living room without an extinguisher around.

Those dudes look like they are handling nuclear materials. I like that they do it in Espanol.

Not joking when I say it's seriously dangerous. Had a broken arrow football from somewhere in the parking lot come flying in and take out the fryer last year.. thank god it was safely away from cars and people in tent/lawnchairs because it made Pompei look like chutes and ladders.

Thanks for the advice. I won’t try to deep fry a turkey the next time I’m TAILGATING with a bunch of drunken football fans.

Seriously, I know the risks. All precautions will be taken.

My biggest dilemma is should I inject or just stick with the dry rub.

Turducken is the answer to your questions.

My dad does this. All boneless and delicious. Hard to go for seconds with such a heavy dish...

Lets expand on this... has anyone deep fried a turducken?

Soak it in a brine.

Without having read the deep frying recommendations, you should also turn off the burner when you're putting the turkey in. Ice crystals make the oil go all over the place, and with a burner nearby...that's just asking for your house to burn down.

Appreciate the common sense.

But I did not envision this being a thread all about my deep-frying adventure when I made it.

Is anyone else doing anything cool for Thanksgiving? Besides Sean2 who will be doing the traditional roast for his flock?

We're having the whole family in, so it's going to be a big day. I've spent the last two days preparing ahead. :)

Happy Thanksgiving, USA! I hope everyone who celebrates has a great time!

Grilling and deep frying turkey is all too common here for get togethers to be considered cool. I wanted to do a turducken but couldn't sell the wife on it this year.

Just a small family gathering here. Last year I worked everything out so that I could eat three full Thanksgiving dinners (with seconds and desert), which was pretty awesome. Just one this year, though.

I've been disgustingly healthy my entire life. Hardly ever had a cold let alone anything more serious. Recently I had a medical scare that really frightened us. Well, after visiting my regular doctor and the neurologist at Group Health last week and undergoing a lot of tests it turns out to be a relatively minor problem. Just scary symptoms. So yeah, I am thankful fer sure.

Anyhoo...from me and mine to you and yours...HAPPY THANKSGIVING everyone!!!

Doing the turkey thing with the inlaws + extended family this year (20+), which means I'll partake in the requisite personal rumsoaked force field prior to going over so I will be nice and mellow with all the blithering idiocy.

Personally, I'd rather slow cook a brisket than gnaw on an overgrown yard bird. Although, I do like the giblet gravy on stuffing and mashed potatoes. And I'm definately looking forward to the homemade apple pie.

Happy Turkey day folks.

I'm pwning the giblet gravy on grandma's stuffing recipe and garlic mashed. Best part of dinner.

I agree.. brisket ftw.. but I take what I can get in negotiations with the old lady. Christmas has been secured with ribeye and lobster tail already.

We're having Thanksgiving at home this year, our 2nd one together, and James' family is probably coming by as they did last year as well. Just got done with all my baking (pies and cheesecake) tonight and will be cooking ham (don't do turkey much) et all tomorrow.

Oh, and I'm hellaciously sick. Go me.

We're doing the same thing in my parent's new house here in Baltimore. Just the five of us (parents, sister, grandmother and I). We're already making jokes about how awkward it's gonna be.

From Khalil Gibran, on Eating and Drinking:

Would that you could live on the fragerance of the earth, and like an air plant be sustained by the light.
But since you must kill to eat, and rob the young of its mother's milk to quench your thirst, let it then be an act of worship,
And let your board stand an altar on which the pure and the innocent of forest and plain are sacrificed for that which is purer and still more innocent in many.
When you kill a beast say to him in your heart,
"By the same power that slays you, I to am slain; and I too shall be consumed.
For the law that delivered you into my hand shall deliver me into a mightier hand.
Your blood and my blood is naught but the sap that feeds the tree of heaven."
And when you crush an apple with your teeth, say to it in your heart,
"Your seeds shall live in my body,
And the buds of your tomorrow shall blossom in my heart,
And your fragrance shall be my breath,
And together we shall rejoice through all the seasons."
And in the autumn, when you gather the grapes of your vineyard for the winepress, say in you heart,
"I to am a vinyard, and my fruit shall be gathered for the winepress,
And like new wine I shall be kept in eternal vessels."
And in winter, when you draw the wine, let there be in your heart a song for each cup;
And let there be in the song a remembrance for the autumn days, and for the vineyard, and for the winepress.

Speaking of Thanksgiving (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061122/ap_on_re_us/teaching_thanksgiving)

Whaddya all think? I'm all for giving kids an accurate view of history, but don't think it necessarily needs to be gore-filled. As for that lady who says this is teaching kids to "hate America", she's whack.

I think that you'd enjoy children learning disillusionment and secondhand shame earlier than normal. Hardly surprising.

I AM CELEBRATING THE WASIKU DESTROYING THE ORIGINAL MAN IN THANKSGIVING WITH A DAMN VEGAN.

Well, vegetarian, but it's like walking on eggshells and pins and needles while cutting the tension with chainsaw because the mother effin' yam with marshmallows can't be within a 50 mile radius of the holy protein substance lest eternal torture and pain shall be hexed upon us all.

History is riddled with the strong taking from the weak. Big deal. Cry me a trail of tears, build a bridge and get over it.

Or you could contribute to their cause by going gambling.

Oh, and I'm going over a friends house to watch the games and going into a tritophan (however it is spelled) food comma. The drink Wild Turkey because it has turkey in the name.

Good thing it's a long weekend.

I am spending it with three out of four of my siblings and their mother who makes especially delicious food. I am going to be making a crap load of cookies/snacks though.. we plan on playing our fun game of two-hand touch family football, WATCHING football, eating, drinking, and playing games. Should be a good time and I am so happy to not be spending it with my cunty almost-mother-in-law. Joy of joys!

The mother of four said the traditional Thanksgiving celebrations in schools instill "a false sense of what really happened before and after the feast. It wasn't all warm and fuzzy."I hope she makes sure to explicitly tell her children about all the fun diseases that decimated the American Indians. "This is what feces from a dysentery victim look like.. STOP CRYING AND GET BACK HERE!! IT WASN'T ALL WARM AND FUZZY!!"

I'm working. People in Phoenix are calling to scream at me because they didn't pay their cable bill and now they can't watch their football.

It's busy. There's 10 of us answering the phones vs. the usual 140.

Teach kids the truth. Schools have too long been institutions of doctored history, IMO.

The deep fry was a success! NO explosions, burned down houses, trauma center visits or major catastrophy. Just very satiated diners. Went with the dry rub with good old Lawry’s Magic Dust (plain old garlic salt).

Quite an event. Turned out nummy as people say. Some of it was like chicharrones so we called it turkey chicharrones. The Mexicans in our family said it was the best turkey they ever had.

Some camera phone shots.
