View Full Version : Do you play GS for business or pleasure?

Do you play to make money off GS items or do you play in order to have fun or relax? If you say you play for both, then ask yourself if couldn't make money off the game will you still be playing? If you answer yes, then pick pleasure and if not say business.

No I'm just curious. I'm wondering how many people are really "playing" the game and how many are just sticking around because of the money. I think its a important distinction.

I think it's a moot distinction.

Not really, if the majority of the people are playing for business it doesn't say much about the game other then the few hardcore addicts buying this stuff.

It's very safe to say that the majority does not play for business.
This poll is bogus. Your options are too limiting.
I play for pleasure, but I choose GS over other games because of the potential financal benefit it represents where others do not. By it being a business would represent doing this for a career. I'm simply doing it for the added benefit of investment.
So I get utility from playing, and I get utility from selling off items for cash when I'm finished with it... such as silvers, gear, and characters.

Way too limiting. Perhaps even stupid.
I play (like I play anything) because it's fun or entertaining. This does not stop me making money from the game.

This was in the initial post. If you couldn't make money off it will you still shell out money to play?

I think that most of us play for pleasure, but we all can realize that there's a potential profit that can be made from selling non-existant items.
If tomorrow I couldn't make any money off the game, I would still play it because I enjoy it.

Whether or not someone plays the game for pleasure or for business really doesn't matter too much. They still have to pay Simu for their account(s). And you don't need the uber items that these folks collect and sell to make it to cap. I have never made characters to sell them. However if that is someone's thing so be it. Does it cheapen the game? :shrugs:
Though I can see that selling things for Real Life money is rewarding, since you have to shell out so much time and money to Simu.
Having the ability to sell items to see a RL cash return on the time and money spent in GS was the primary reason why I chose to drop WoW and continue to play GS.
Absent that reason, I would have chose WoW.

I play gs occasionally for pleasure; I also play to see what kind of systems simu says they're dev'ing to try to get a sense of what direction they're taking their game to try to maximize their profit.
I've never sold things for cash, due to a feeling that it unbalances the game. I don't mind if others do it, but I won't be part of the problem personally.

Sure, but could you talk the Pope out?
Used to play for pleasure only. Switched to WoW seeing as it didn't flick my switch in that department anymore.
Still sometimes have one hunt here or there until I decide wether or not to let it go completely.

No choice. I have quite a hole where GS used to be.

And you either have to plug that hole, or face an awful fact: You just wasted all those years on nothing.
It's why I could never sell my characters once I've invested any time in them.

Having sold all my character's stuff, I didn't feel too bad about moving on. Yeah, I definitely lost money in the end, but it didn't really feel like it when I got that check in the mail.
I do regret spending so much time in GS, though. If I'd have picked up tennis instead you'd be seeing me on TV :( :( :(

In order to make a horrible 26k a year you would need to sell roughly 37 mil at $14 per a week to pull home 500 a week. That's before paypal takes 4%, unless you use some other form of payment.
So, if you are playing a normal 40 hour work week, that would be 750k an hour for 8 hours a day. Again, to make ONLY 26k a year, the same thing a non college grad can pull off at $12.50 an hour before taxes...
The problem is, I think people have business confused with the ability to have a good time and profit from it. Such as gambling. Yes I know there are professional gamblers, but the majority of people who do stop at the casino are going to have a good time, don't plan to bring home a few thousand but have wishful thinking.
I think it's great in the MMO world that the day you get sick and tired of the game I have the chance of getting a percentage of what I paid for the game over time back. In some cases, MAKE a small portion of money! Yes, your time was put in there, but you're not getting your time back for games like FFXII, KH2, or Oblivion. And selling it used is lucky to score your 30% back.

I agree with the above. It isnt that people are going around supporting themselves with GS but it is just like an added bonus to get a little bit of real life cash.

I play because I find it relaxing and entertaining.
I realize you can make a profit from it. I have tried that path and it simply wasn't for me. I think it can take away from my personal enjoyment of the game. I have sold a couple of characters. The money was great and easy. The first time I heard one of the former characters thinking i r be on my way 2 the towr, it became a mission to get her back. Selling items might not be so bad, but I think its generally bad for the economy.
