View Full Version : Holocaust Archive Going Public
Mighty Nikkisaurus

"This vast archive — 16 miles of files in six nondescript buildings in a German spa town — contains the fullest records of Nazi persecutions in existence. But because of concerns about the victims’ privacy, the ITS has kept the files closed to the public for half a century, doling out information in minimal amounts to survivors or their descendants on a strict need-to-know basis.
This policy, which has generated much ill-feeling among Holocaust survivors and researchers, is about to change."

Shit.. I forgot the italics.
:(
I guess with the Survivors dying off, they have decided enough time has past to make the records public.
PB, Sean2, if you travel to Germany you can now be arrested.

I have some photos somewhere of a visit I made to Auschwitz. I will upload them when I get time/the inclination.
Horrific place, the likes of which I have only seen matched by the American visitors to Auschwitz, shouting the likes of "HEY CYNTHIA...GET A PHOTO OF ME NEXT TO THIS GAS CHAMBER!"
The Holocost is a huge lie! Just like landing on the Moon!!!
Can we hug now?

Wow. Fifty million documents...the Nazis were pretty meticulous with record keeping. Hope it puts a sock in the deniers who pretend the Holocaust was a vast fantasy. And given the rise in anti-Semitism recently I think the opening of the archives is very timely.

Whose truth is that?
My comment was based on my observations of Americans at Auschwitz who were saying "get a photo of me in front of this gas chamber" which I found utterly repulsive. Marginally more repulsive than the fact that the gas chambers ever existed.
Of course, we can now get into a slanging match about who has the worst tourists, but who the fuck cares?
I respect a lot of American people. None of which are you. None of which are the fat fuck that wanted his photo taken in front of a gas chamber at Auschwitz. GTFO.

Anyway, the people who want to deny it ever happened cannot be convinced. They'll say that the records were only opened now to give them time to forge them. Whatever makes them feel better about being bastards, I guess.

You are more repulsed about a guy who wanted to have his pic taken in front of the gas chambers than the actual gas chambers and their use.

And I don't care what that study says - Americans abroad are obnoxious. British may be snooty, but Americans expect the world to be laid at their feet when they're on vacation, and if it's not, there'll be hell to pay in a loud manner. If Americans are the "nicest" in any way, I'd imagine it would be in parting with their money. That bit about "willing to try other indigenous habits or cultures" is so false about Americans it makes me mildly ill. Americans are the most xenophobic people in the so-called Western Civilization.

Yes...the BBC is known for lying and exaggeration...
Anyway, the thing about American bashing that is disturbing is that it's risk free. It's almost a populist sport (so much so that some people seem surprised when others are offended). After all, you can't go around making sweeping generalizations about gays, women, blacks, asians, etc. But Americans are fair game. So go ahead...make a sweeping generalization about 300 MILLION people. I'm sure there will be some ignorant fools that will buy into it. Probably the same fools that deny the Holocaust...
By the way TheE, I know you like to style yourself a great thinker and philosopher, however, what is usually most apparent when you post is your hostility and anger. You should see someone about that...

And yet I made an observation about the American Visitors to the concentration camp when I was there. No generalisations, no prejudice. No assumptions made about anyone else otherthan the pricks who were acting like it was Disneyland.
And yes, PB. I find it disgusting that people saw it as a good day out and were acting like it was some kind of amusement park, when all I could feel was numb, all the way around. People who trivialise something horrendous, are worse in my eyes than the thing itself, albeit an awful thing.

I know some people deny the Holocaust.. which is fine. It's perfectly within their right to do so. I don't take offense to it really more so I pity them for not accepting history as it was. You can accept that the Holocaust happened and was a terrible thing and still not think that the US and other countries should just blindly support anything Israel does. It's not that black and white to everyone.
All together this development of the Holocaust Archive going public isn't to try and "convince" those who don't believe that it did happen.. because that's a moot point and they'll likely never change their opinion on it. However, this is a great tool for families who would like to know what happened to their loved ones before it gets to be too late and too muddled. I think this is great more on a personal level for the millions of families who deserve to know what happened beyond just numbers.

Actually.. and this is coming from a stout atheist.. I don't believe you can actually prove that the world wasn't created in 7 days... or prove evolution.
I'm there with you.. but it's not quite the same thing.

I never said you couldn't say or think that people who deny the Holocaust aren't fucking retards.
I think they're fucking retards, and judging by the fact that I obviously believe in the Holocaust and care about the families, I'm not like OMG HE MAY BE RIGHT. Someone HAVING a right and BEING right are two different things.
It IS your right to say or think that the world is flat, that the Holocaust never happened, that your statue of liberty constructed entirely of toothpaste, plastic fork tines, and carrots has the face of the Virgin Mary and should run for President, or what the hell ever. And it is other people's right to laugh their ass off and call you psycho!
Seriously, wtf is up with people on these forums being all I LOVE AMERICA AND I LOVE FREEDOM in one post but so fucking anti-free speech when someone doesn't freak out over someone else saying something stupid. Someone saying and REALLY believing their cat is a Sith Lord that will rule the world is not only legal but it's a prime example of what's awesome about our very freedom to say a lot of what we want-- you'll always have something to laugh about, if nothing else.
Even if something is proven it doesn't mean you have to believe it or pretend you believe it. It just makes you a dumbass for NOT. That's all.

Well, not really.I can, actually. I can prove that the earth is spinning with a pendulum and a laser, and by doing that in a bunch of places I can prove that the earth is round-ish (certainly not flat, anyway). It's a consequence of deriving Newton's laws in a non-inertial (that is, accelerating) reference frame. A rotating reference frame is the classic example of an accelerating reference frame, so there you go. :)
