Hey folks...turned on my computer, and my sound is totally fucked. With all the sound controls on, I can barely hear whatever's playing.
Anyone got any diagnostic methods to figure out the problems?

Plug in different speakers. Plug in your current speakers in another audio device. If it works with different speakers, it's your speakers. If your speakers work with another machine, it's your computer. Then go from there.

This sounds pretty stupid but... do you have headphones plugged in? The fact you hear something and not nothing says at least your drivers are (likely) working.

I don't have headphones plugged in (I don't even own anything), and the speakers I'm referring to are the normal, built-in laptop ones. I pretty much have to put my ears up to them to hear them.

Nevermind then, laptops suck.

Try checking your audio controls, something may have "turned them down".
Just right click on the volume control on your task bar to open them.

Sorry to say it, may be your motherboard's sound card going to pot.
Dell?

I've been having problems with a very strange clicking sound. I have all the latest BIOS and drivers and whatnot. I'm sure it's a faulty motherboard or hard drive that needs to be replaced. But it's such a pain in the ass to send the computer away. That's what I get for being stingy and not getting the 1 year home warranty.

I had the clicking sound...it was the hard drive crapping itself. Eventually I got the blue screen of death and had to replace it. Seems the armature, or whatever, you want to term it was worn out.

hrm...what model? I have a Compaq, maybe I can look at mine and help a bit more then.
Try plugging a headset or some speakers in and see if it's your laptop's speakers too.

Oi, I have an R3000Z. Not sure on the specs on yours....see if it's the speakers, though. That'd be an easier and less expensive fix than the motherboard.

That's the HP troubleshooting guide for no sound.
try finding a more recent driver for your sound card and install it or try reinstalling your current driver. Not sure if someone already posted this but if they did my bad.

Make sure there isn't a small dial somewhere on your computer that you didn't accidently switch. I've seen that a few times where people do that and they had no idea that the dial even existed.
oh ya i was just thinking about it and i rememberd a while back i was getting some real shitty audio outta my speakers and the reason was because my audio cord was only partialy plugged in, some how it got yanked out a tiny bit and since it wasnt makeing a full connection it was comeing out of the speakers real low and crackling a lil.

Still barely audible sound from my laptop speakers, even though I've got all the volume controls I know of jacked up to maximum.
Hardware problem? I just dropped too much money on my car, I don't need this shit.

So, I haven't had sound for the past coupla of months, just been putting it off before taking it somewhere to get it looked at. Accidently brushed one of the volume DOWN buttons, and suddenly my sound kicked on FULL BLAST. Holy shit.
I'm glad I wasn't watching porn.
