LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia (AP) -- The trial of an Atlanta-area father accused of circumcising his 2-year-old daughter with scissors is focusing attention on an ancient African practice that experts say is slowly becoming more common in the U.S. as immigrant communities grow.

Khalid Adem, a 30-year-old immigrant from Ethiopia, is charged with aggravated battery and cruelty to children.

Human rights observers said they believe this is the first criminal case in the U.S. involving the 5,000-year-old practice.

Prosecutors say Adem used scissors to remove his daughter's clitoris in their apartment in 2001. The child's mother said she did not discover it until more than a year later.

"He said he wanted to preserve her virginity," Fortunate Adem, the girl's mother, testified this week. "He said it was the will of God. I became angry in my mind. I thought he was crazy."

They should include 'practicing medicine without a license' just to add some extra jail time.

How does the mother NOT notice it until a year later? Was the child not in pain?? Sheesh! Some parenting skills.

I read an article about this on MSNBC. Apparently, the father denies having done the deed. His attorney says the mother's family may have had it done. Considering she's saying she didn't know this had been done until the child was a year old, I'm inclined to believe there's more to this story than we yet know. What the father's attorney says could be true.

She's what..seven years old now? If she noticed it when the child was a year old, why is she JUST now saying something? It reeks of the old 'more to the story than is being told' saying.

I would say a foreskin for a foreskin in this instance... however, since the effect is lesser on a man, they might remove a little more so he'll have the same effect as she does when he wishes to have sex in the future.

WTMF.

I read a book in an Anthropology class I took, and it discusses this "female circumcision" in it. Its rediculous. Its unsanitary and painful. There are all kinds of things they do to them to "preserve their virginity" and its disgusting. I cannot BELIEVE he's trying to pull this shit off in the US.

Female circumcision...we need a new word for it. The lifetime results of such a procedure on a female can hardly be compared to the removal of the foreskin from an infant male...

The word is weak. Although the ability to engage in sexual activity would still be present I think castration would be a better term than circumcision.

Parents need to be horsewhipped.

It's called Female Genital Mutilation by most human rights workers.

FGM for short.

She's seven now, yes, but this has been going on for years. The procedure was done in 2001 and they were divorced in 2003, so it's not like she JUST found out.

I know you guys like to joke around that we have a mini penis, but the truth is, there is no foreskin in the same sense as a male. A circumcision for a woman is like taking the head off your penis. There is no comparison. Dun do it.

This case smells, the mother didn't find out until a year later? Who was changing the child's diapers?

How does this differ from Male circumcision? I am not trying to be a smart ass I just don't know much about it.

Not sure. You would think she would notice the redness and swelling shortly after.

Are you single? If you are, not knowing this is why. :moon2:

Something that many do not want to touch on this one is that it was an Islamic household. This procedure is sadly commonly practiced by many Islamics and some Orthodox Christians in Northern Africa.

Fundamentalist Islamic men are not exactly known for their respect of their wives opinions and while this is pure speculation on my part, I would say that the mother was far too frightened of her husband at the time to speak up.

The difference between this and male circumcision is twofold.

Physically, men simply have some foreskin trimmed off. A questionable practice perhaps, but not generally terribly harmful. Girls on the other hand tend to have their clits cut off in this procedure. To compare, it is essentially like a man having his pecker cut off.

The other difference is motivation.

With boys it tends to be religious, or esthetic reasons.

With the girls, the entire intent is to steal sexual pleasure from them in hopes that they stay virgins until marriage and stay loyal after marriage.

The entire procedure is sick and every effort should be made to eliminate FGM from every continent.

As a sexual deterrence, clitoral removal wouldn't be all that successful anyway. Many women indulge in sexual escapades for a feeling of closeness and connection with their partner. As well as just the thrill of doing something naughty. Sexual orgasm is often lower on the list than one would think.

I think that would be a quiet justice if this happened to him.

Even better, you could graft the damned thing to his nose. He might be a bit uncomfortable, walking around bent in half, but I bet he'd get the message.

Many women indulge in sexual escapades for a feeling of closeness and connection with their partner. Sadly true, and it's usually due to an inability to achieve an orgasm from their partner in the first place.

Anyway, on topic:

"Hey, asshole, you aren't in Ethiopia any more and that's why you've been sentenced to 10 years in prison." Fucking idiot.

The sad thing is he will probably be out in 3 to 5 years with good behavior. What he did to the little girl is permanent.

The practice isn't an Islamic one, it is an African one. I know that much.

Fundamentalist Islamic men are not exactly known for their respect of their wives opinions and while this is pure speculation on my part, I would say that the mother was far too frightened of her husband at the time to speak up.

I come from a conservative Islamic home. Any Islamic woman I know would scream bloody murder if their husbands try to do this to their daughters. I think the word fundamental has gotten a bad rap in regards to religion. It is possible to be fundamental in your beliefs and be a loving, generous, and caring person. Perhaps rabid would be a better word.

The difference between this and male circumcision is twofold.

I didn't realise they remove the clitoris, does seem a barbaric procedure.

I think hygiene is another reason male circumcision was practiced.
