I'm trying to connect my PC to the DLP TV in my room so I went to Wal-Mart and bought some cables. The guy who worked there said I'd need an HDMI to DVI connection for the video and either a fiber optic sound cable or a digital audio coaxial cable for the sound. I went with the digital cable. I got home and hooked everything up. The video works but I have no sound. I hooked the sound cable to my computer's onboard sound slot and tried every connection on my TV with no luck.
Here's the sound cable

I'm not really sure to do, but your first mistake was trusting someone who works in walmart.

Well to be honest this was my first time going to Wal-Mart ever. Also I asked a guy in circuit city a few weeks back and they said I'd need an hdmi to dvi cable and some kind of sound cable. I had the two cables in my hand at circuit city but they wanted $150 for them cause they were the Monster brand. At Wal-Mart I paid $40 total for both, Philips brand.
I’ve thought about doing this, but the manual for my DLP says NOT to hook up a computer to it.

Trying every connection on the TV only works if you're changing what Aux you're on, etc. Just ensure that you're working with the right audio-in for the video-in you used. Then make sure your actually pumping sound out the onboard sound (plug into different audios on the tv and use the windows beep test found in the control panel/sound, flip through aux on the tv to see if you get sound on one). Do you have a plug-in soundcard that could be selected as your sound hardware device?
Try plugging the sound into actual speakers too to make sure you're getting output (or headphones).

I looked through my TV manual and it had an entire chapter on how to hook up a PC to the TV and it said surprisingly that I can't use an HDMI/DVI cable, meanwhile, that's exactly what I have and the picture is fine. The diagram in the manual says for video I need a "15Pin (D-Sub) Cable" and the audio one is just "Audio Cable". Also, according to the picture, everything I have is connected properly. I think I'm going to return both cables, see if I can dig up some info at the store.
Huh, I wonder why my Toshiba says not to. Anyway, I have HDMI from my cable box to my TV, but the audio is on a seperate standard red/white jack to Audio In. There is a port for digital that I have not bought the cable for yet.
On my set I have Audio options. It comes set with Auto but I changed it to digital and could not get sound from my cable box. Maybe thats the problem?

I have a DVI cable from my computer to my TV, with a HDMI converter at the TV end.
For Audio, it's a separate stereo line that plugs into the speaker output of my computer, runs to the TV where it splits into RCA audio (red/white) cables.
