Local news reports quoted New York Fire Department officials as saying two people were confirmed dead. Officials said there is no indication the incident was a result of terrorism.

They're not sure if it was a helicopter or a small plane. I used to live right near there, and there's a heliport a few blocks away near Cornell Medical. So, I'm guessing it was either technical difficulties or pilot error.

I heard about this a bit ago. I really don't think it's terrorist related or anything either, but I feel for the people trapped. :(

Been watching. Not terrorist related. It was a small plane and it did not breach the building on a structural level. You can see scrape marks down the building. Looks like it is mechanical failure.

Horrible. My thoughts go out to them.

All the heliports on the East River are heliports. Not airports.

You always see skimmers over the Hudson, but how often do you see one over the Harlem River? The closest small plane airport is Westchester. I don't understand NORAD having been another link in the chain of command for West Point jets start patrol.

If it's suggested that mechanical failure is the cause, and not some emo mad at his/her ex, then at least it's not as bad as something like 587 on Queens.

Anyway, how fucking bizarre. My aunt and grandmother are in downtown Manhattan seeing a play today and this will delay them a shitload.

And what has me wondering about this the most is that when you compare the amount of time between the plane that crashed into the Empire State Building to 9-11 to the time between 587 and now this, it makes me highly skeptical of what exactly went down, at least (for now.)

Corey Liedel?

There have been reports on the TV that Corey Lidle (the Yankees starting pitcher) accidentally crashed his plane, which makes this a seriously weird (in addition to seriously tragic) event.

Who the fuck was in the plane with him (Lidle)?

Well, that won't really make our starting rotation any worse than it already is.

Anyway, he was flying alone out of Teeterborough and on a day like this that's not something that somebody who has had their pilot's license for less than a year should do, probably.

I would have rather had this been some emo kid. The entire situation is making me incredibly pissed when going over it a couple times in my mind in a different light.

<<Anyway, he was flying alone>>

So how did two people die in the plane?

He hit a residental building its possible the other people were in the building.

Four people are dead, two in the building.

For whatever reason, I just heard that Lidle, his instructor, and two other passengers were killed, with an unknown number dead in the building. So uh... at least 2 people dead from the plane, anyway.

Second update: New number is two people.

Wow, if the Phillies don't trade him he's not in Manhattan and he doesn't die.

If Yanks don't get bounced first round he's not flying, either.

Crazy how many things led up to his death.

RIP Lidle.

MSNBC says that only the flight instructor and pilot have died (Corey Lidle). Per the coroner's office report to AP.

Odd. I'm watching the coverage on local news right now (Lidle used to pitch for Cinci).
