I have a meeting where the dress is specificly asked to be 'smart - casual' on the letter.
Any of you have a clue what this means I can wear without going over the top in either smart or casual?
I can buy the clothes so honestly, any help will be great.

For a guy, that would mean a shirt/tie - no jacket.

For a girl, I would assume its a half step below what would be considered a business suit.

To me, 'smart - casual' is the same as business casual. Meaning nice slacks, pants, trousers, or whatever word you want and a button down shirt (preferably long-sleeve).

If we're talking business casual, it means slacks, not jeans. A shirt with a collar. Tie is optional as that's more for straight business attire.

I think I'd select nice slacks, a long-sleeved shirt and a sports jacket. You won't be overdressed, but you won't be underdressed, either.

Tie sends it to "professional". Stick with a collared long sleeved shirt and nice pants, no jeans. I don't think the jacket is necessary, but the nice thing about this time of year is you can put on a sports jacket as your outerwear, then take it off when you get there if you are over dressed :)

Heh. The jacket probably isn't necessary. It's just one of my little "idiotsyncracies". I always like to be just a wee step ahead of the curve. It ensures you'll be remembered. ;)

You can get away with a polo but a button up shirt would be better.

what the others stated above. you can always dress down versus having to dress up while you are there

Go naked. Make a statement.

Jerry curls and a diaper.

Fight conformity!

Outside non-uniform slightly trippy tie w/o jacket + trippier-colored long sleeved button up + blackity-black jeans and worn loafers. Shiny watch, no chains.

You want yo' ass to have the spunk of punk without actually being a punk ass.

Nope, tie is actually Smart - Casual

Business - Casual is tucked in shirt with slacks

Business - Professional is a jacket

Smart casual, wear a tie. If you look around and other people have open collars, head to the bathroom, take off the tie, put it in your pocket.

But yes, buttoned shirt, nice pants (khakis), shoes, no jacket.

Smart - Casual.

Woman - Slacks or skirt, blouse with a collar or better yet get a men's dress shirt, french cuff prefered. Limit your accessories to small earrings and maybe a pendant.

Man - Slacks. No khakis, no jeans, no cargo pants, slacks. Dress shirt, tie optional, jacket optional. If it's business casual wear a sport coat, no tie or shirt and tie no coat.

Depending on what type of meeting, who will be in attendance, what your role in the meeting will be will dictate how flashy or subtle you need to be. Your goal is to not be the best or worst dressed there.

Always have a backup option, pressed and in your vehicle. Arrive early, should you discover everyone else is dressed to a higher degree return to your vehicle and change to match. When I have to travel for business I always bring a suit even if it's not something I think I'll need. You never want to be the person that shows up unprepared to a meeting, both with material and in attire. Unfortunatly there is alot that rides on your presentation of your appearence in meetings so you have to be prepared.

OMG it's just a meeting. Backup suit?! Good grief. For that, just wear the suit and work down (remove the tie, remove the jacket, loosen the collar).

I'm not sure about the khaki's, i think they'd work but I'd wear some of your dress slacks and a nice button up shirt, and you'll be fine. Back up suit, pft. You don't need that! I would do what Wezas suggested though and bring a tie, just in case.. go based off of what the majority is wearing though, not one or two people.

Every post helped alot.
I've decided to go smart pants, brown shoes, brown belt, smart shirt and like most said.. a tie which I could remove easily if overdressed.
Thanks for the advice.

And thanks Tijay, but god no.

What kind of meeting is it? Seems odd to request you wear certain clothing (unless it's a job interview that is).

Any job that has levels of dress code required to sit around a table and accomplish virtually nothing is not a job I would want.

I also wouldn't want a job where a polo is acceptable within the dress code.

Your dream job involves flannel shirts, red suspenders, and wool beanies. Don't lie.

Every company I've ever known/worked for has a dress code of business casual (pants, shirt w/collar - polo included).

As a matter of fact, I know of a Fortune 250 company that bans ties, suits, etc. because they feel that it becomes a distraction. They would much rather their employees dress down instead of their employees worry about who dresses the best.

Part of that is probably based on where you live as well. If you live in a place where the heat index regularly hits 110ish in the summer then asking all your employees to wear suits every day isn't going to get you very far.

Personally, I would opt for slacks, a well-fitted charcoal pima shirt and a suede sportscoat.

EDIT: I work for a Fortune 200 company. We're casual through the end of 2006, although I find myself overdressing simply because it looks nice, and I feel more professional. Doesn't work for everyone though.

Asha

Not suede but corderouy. Looks great nevertheless.
And definately a well fitted shirt.

Vinh's also a metrosexual, so take his advice with a grain of salt. He probably gets manicures.

If you think I advocate ties, much less a suite ... you're fucking nuts.

I wear a suite and tie for weddings, funerals, and visits from specific customers ... that's it.

I understand looking presentable, beyond that a dress code is nothing more than a waste of your employees money and time.

Psst.. it's suit, not suite. As in:

"Look at this killer new suit I got from Armani today."

and

"Hey baby, lets go get busy in our Honeymoon suite!"

Lab rats are the worst. Most of them wear velcro shoes, or belts and shoes that don't match, member's only jackets, etc. I lawl everytime I have to go resolve a computer issue in a lab because I know it's going to be revenge of the nerds all over. That's right, the computer geek calls you NERDS!
