This is something that has bothered me for a while now. What the hell is the appeal of MySpace? I came across this quote in another thread that got me wondering:

* Myspace. I am addicted to myspace.

I just have to ask...for the love of god...why? Jesus, most of the pages are seizure-inducing layouts that make me want to set my eyes on fire and smack someone over the head with a dictionary (e.g. zebra print background, white text, with some angst filled song playing in the background, etc.). I'm really not being critical of your enjoyment. I just wish I understood the whole phenomenon that is MySpace.

I think what bugs me the most is that MySpace denigrates the very meaning of the word "friend". In my opinion a friend should be someone that will volunteer to drive you around in a white bronco with 75 police cars pursuing you down the highway.

However, MySpace "friends" are cheap and barely worth a dime a dozen. The whole point of MySpace is to accrue as many friends as possible. It doesn't matter if you know anything about them at all. Just click a button and ask them to add you as a friend! I don't know, maybe this somehow provides some people with a sense of self-worth that perhaps they are missing from the real world. After all, can you really be a loser if you have 2,374 friends? And god, I won't even go into how I think MySpace cheapens the very notion of sexuality.

Someone tried to tell me that MySpace provides a forum for aspiring musicians, comics, writers, and assorted other entertainers. However, I wonder if these artists read the fine print when creating their MySpace accounts.

According to the Proprietary Rights in Content on MySpace.com:

"By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content, messages, text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, profiles, works of authorship, or any other materials (collectively, "Content") on or through the Services, you hereby grant to MySpace.com, a non-exclusive, fully-paid and royalty-free, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense through unlimited levels of sublicensees) to use, copy, modify, adapt, translate, publicly perform, publicly display, store, reproduce, transmit, and distribute such Content on and through the Services."

So yeah, your original work? Not so much yours anymore.

OK I am done ranting now but still baffled...

Same reason people post on a BBS(forums). They have forums, comments and you can find ALL the cool people, obviously.

And no, I'm not addicted.

Myspace is a great way to stay in touch with all my RL friends all over the city I live in.
It's good for discussing whatever we did together the night before, planning what to do later and just generally 'socialise' when you can't physicly get together for any reason.
I have 25 (?) friends on Myspace since I'm not interested in anyone I don't know and don't want to know anyone new. It's there as a tool to simply keep up with events within my city and to enjoy a chat now and then with people whos company I love.
Coupled with MSN it's a bunch of fun.

I used myspace to pick up girls.

Now I just make fun of people with it.

Most of the people on my friend's list are either people I talk to a lot (like PC people) or RL friends from back home, including old high school friends I had lost touch with. If I hadn't spoken to someone for a reasonable amount of time at some point, I don't bother. I don't take friend requests just because I get asked.

If it weren't for myspace, I wouldn't have been able to reunite with my best friend from high school whom I talk to frequently now.

I don't know. As someone who has a hard time making new friends, I like to have a central place to keep in touch with my old ones.

I've found a few old high school friends and talk to other GS people there, I'm not addicted to it and sometimes go for a couple days without going there, but I'm glad I signed up considering I hadn't seen nor heard from some of these people in a long time, I enjoy having it.

Myspace can be fun if you know how to click "DENY". That said, my page does not induce, to my knowledge, any seizures.

What I got addicted to was messing with my layout, not collecting a zillion "friends".

Heehee, since the quote that started this thread was mine, I'll explain myself. I use myspace as a way of keeping in touch with people that I know all over the country and the world. And no, I'm not talking of superficial OMGBEMYFRIEND friends. I'm talking about real friends that I know some way or another.

Do I have some people on there I don't know? Sure. I have some bands and some random performers that I like or friends of other friends. I like using myspace to search for old high school friends and have gotten in touch with people after 10 years of losing touch because we each went our separate ways.

I also use myspace to find music that is not so mainstream. I have a very eclectic taste in music and there are tons of artists on there who are unsigned with great music.

I love playing around with my layouts and changing it up a bunch. Plus I have a myspace for personal use and for my Gemstone character because I like having a goofy way for Augie to write stuff.

Some people have livejournal. Some people have blogspot. I have myspace. And I  it!

I have a myspace account without a profile so I can look at pictures when people direct me there.

That's it. I have no interest in it, really.. though people seem to be very surprised when I tell them this.

Yeah playing with the layout is a blast. So is having ugly guy picture comment wars with certain people. Plus there is so much to work with that you almost never have to write your own HTML. There are a bazillion sites for pictures, graphics and all kinds of stuff you can add to your page. Right now mine is kinda dedicated to my brother that died this summer. There's really no limit to what you can do with it. AND I am VERY good at clicking the deny button :) No friend whores here.

Tayre is on my list.

Tayre is not in the top 8 that display on the main page.

This is intentional.

Its great to catch up with people you haven't seen in years. I keep running into people I went to school with on MySpace and there's no way I would have had that chance if we were not on there.

People in GS with MySpace can be both amusing and irritating. It used to be random people whispering and asking for screen names. Now its the random person whispering that if I want to see what they look like I should check out their page which leaves me to respond with something profound and brilliant like, Uh, I'm just here to hunt? Thanks though.

I <3 teh Myspace. I used to be a friend whore, but then I got online herpes and decided I couldn't handle it anymore. So now the 200 people I'm friends with are people I actually know/communicate with (except maybe Miss Cleo, the Family Guy, and 1 or 2 randoms).

I was a friend whore. Now I'm just a whore.

But myspace is great for keeping in touch with people when you're too popular to do it yourself in real time. Besides, now I can read all my little brother's retarded bulletins and make fun of him appropriately for it.

I have a MySpace page...I posted one thing from another blog, it was a writing on my character (because I'm a dork), I have four friends, two of them are friends, the other two are hardcore sXe bands one I had asked to be friends with the first night I did the whole "myspace" thing, the other asked me and I thought, what the hell.

I recently dolled it up, I don't exactly know why. But it's there and yeah. Only one friend leaves me messages.

The rest of the time I just get mail about webcam groups crap.

Personally, I'm a bigger fan of Yahoo! 360.

Heh. I gave it a glance and didn't find much humor, to be honest. I'm not fond of deprecating humor of any sort, so that's not unusual for me.

I made mine to talk to friends I don't see as much anymore.

One of my friends from college is there (he was being deployed to Iraq when we agreed to make them) and now some of my friends from the boards are there since I wrangle back and forth between actually posting and being around with classes and things, as well as some of my friends that I grew up with but no longer see.

I like myspace for its blogging feature. -And Conan's poetry :)

I never thought that Myspace was going to blow up the way it did. Had it since 2004, because of one of my friends. I never logged into it until prolly a year later after one of my friends asked me if I had it. I go on it for my friends and only accept people I know some how. I also go on to check up on my nieces and nephews to see what they are up too. It's weird when people find me that I knew in HS. But, it's good to find old friends.

I dont suppose you could link me to a few of the better sites for helping with layouts/backgrounds etc..

I am thinking about actually using it some.

Thanks
