Aside from the money bit, what do you guys think the biggest benefit to leaving GS is?
I'm seriously debating it today.

No idiots.
Maybe I'm in the wrong state to judge (Maryland FTL), but I've yet to find a place without a significant number of idiots.

If you choose to cancel your account, the greater focus on you.
Gemstone is fairly casual gamer unfriendly; I say this because the game carries a higher price than other games, which may suggest to some people that they need to spend much time in said game to get their money's worth.
When I take hiatus from GS, I accomplish much more because it's a distraction. While you're being distracted, you are also forking over whatever subscription you're signed for, instead of making money doing something for *you* that you're awesome at (like singing).

Yes, but I don't have to walk into a room full of strangers, where I live, and then see some assassin jump out of the shadows and kill someone randomly. I don't have to listen to the bitchfest that would follow either.

Yeah, Melissa, that was my biggest thing. I think if I get out of GS for a bit, I can afford at least one of my voice lessons a month. At the level I'm at for classical, I have to have a good teacher, and sadly, it's 60-80 bucks a class(for 1hr).
GS has been good to me over the years, but I wonder sometimes where I would be if I had never played.

Lots of extra money. Lots and lots of extra time, you'll be surprised at how much extra you get accomplished. And, while you might have pangs of 'boy, it sure was fun,' it doesn't take long to see how boring it all really was.

I wasn't speaking strictly of the money but the time that GS requires you to invest too.
I have had some WONDERFUL times in the game, and I'm not knocking them. But ultimately, I had to review the time that I was spending in the game and consider the greater good of investing most of that time in myself.

No more text scroll headaches.
No more people saying "Wait, it's text?" or "Where are the graphics?"

It will leave you more time to pursue your illustrious internet karaoke career?

LOL, very funny.
Hey at least it's something? :P
Angela
No benefits b/c you will just find another game/hobby to focus all of your time on.
Soon you'll start feeling withdrawal and begin to say "giggle" and "laugh" and "nod" in public at social events.
You'll also start running after the pet dog or cat while yelling "Chase!" when you move into the next room.
Soon your family will have you comitted, and you'll be able to be your own GM in your own version of a warped Gemstone in your head as you spend your days in a Thorazine stupor at the local nut house.
Best part of that is it will be a free subscription.
You'll have one less reason to not be excersising. :(

Yep you will wake up and see that Real People do exist. There is a Real World out there. SCARY quick run back inside lock all the doors and windows and log back in to GS. ::Phew:: That was close.

Speaking from entertainment and Gaming, I ran into problems when I left a few times. While some may say GS ISN'T gamer friendly, I beg to differ. I find other MMOs to suck more time just WAITING around or WALKING than you do in GS. I only speak from EQ, DAoC and FFXI. I can remember literally taking 3 hours to walk to Juano to get my chocobo quest done.
But, back to the question. GS fills a HUGE time gap in your life if you game every day. You will need some other form of entertainment that is enjoyable for hours. If you don't pick up another online, you will find yourself spending a lot more money on entertainment. I found myself going to the Casino, bowling alley with friends and to the movies much more often. I'm not saying any of those things are horrible to do, but if money is the issue, you will need to fill the void or you will find yourself paying the same amount it cost for GS basic for a year in a month's time. That void generally doesn't need to be filled for a month or so after you quit however.

You mean a social life? Hmm isn't that the same thing sitting in the small park in the landing begging for massies? Just kidding.
When I left 5 years ago it was difficult at first but after a period of time I was able to fill the void easily. I came back 2 years ago (damn what a lot of money spent, anyway) when I was between jobs. I would search for employement and play on the side.

My problem is I've seriously cut down on my gaming (in the past week I've only signed in to do some enchant projects) and go to a Mentor meeting. When I finish with those ETs, I'll probably freeze my accounts.
My problem is posting on these damn boards. I do too much of it. :P
It must be all the intellectual stimulation. </sarcasm>

If you're thinking about leaving, I'd go ahead and do it. You obviously know that their is a problem with your gaming habits if you're looking for encouragment to quit. Fill the gap with something productive. If you have kids, do something with them instead.. Go to the library and have fun finding an interesting book.. Take up a hobby that's more benefical to you! I try to keep my gaming balanced with the rest of my life... If I plan to play gs today I make sure I work out that day too so I don't feel like I've wasted my free day sitting on my ass playing text based games... Anyway, hope you make the right choice :)

That, and the opportunity to get quality vocal coaching would be all the incentive I'd need, were I you, Angela. There's so much more to life than playing a fantasy role-playing game. A lot of that is missed when so much of your time and energies are focussed on GemStone. Heck, just taking the time to be yourself, and give to yourself, instead of some imaginary elf (or giant, or Sylvan, or whatever) can make a huge difference in your life. :)

Sounds to me like you've already made your mind up Angela, go sing your heart out girl and have fun!

Absolutely take a break. Either youll move on and find better things to do - or youll remember what you liked about the game and come back. I just took a year off and it was the best thing I could do for my enjoyment of the game.

Definately try taking a break, and seeing what life is like without Gemstone.. before selling your accounts.
If after a certain period of time, you are happy without Gemstone, come back and sell the stuff. I doubt anything you've got will decrease in value.
