Anyone here have any luck with setting up a telnet session to Gemstone?

Going to try using my pocket pc, so I can play a bit when I'm not at home, and I can't access the play.net website from work, so just curious if anyone has any info regarding this.

Thanks in advance!

You could probably do it, but logging in would be a big pain in the ass. Simu first gives you a login key, which you must then use to compute a hashed version of your password before logging in.

Ildran gave a step-by-step here:
http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/SGE_protocol_saved_post

You'd be better off at least using a mud client for PocketPC. I couldn't find a PocketPC version of zMud, but I've never been into PocketPC and what-not -- you may have better luck, and there's probably another MUD client out there somewhere.

EDIT: The general consensus is that it's much easier to download the .SAL file from the website first, THEN login using that. That makes it almost trivial -- the problem is that you're apparently blocked from the play.net website, so you need to go through the whole process manually. Ick.

EDITed again: Heh. Okay, I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. I had to try this. Here's what a telnet session looks like, after getting the login key. My commands are bolded, once in-game. This is using Wizard, which includes the GSL tags. I tried StormFront as well, but I figured if you're actually going to do this, you'll be more likely to use the Wizard data.

As you enter this cavern, it quickly opens up into a spacious dome. The smoothness of the wall and the absence of digging lets you know this was all etched by nature. That's gotta be an exercise in pain... I couldn't imagine playing without 200 billion macros, maps, etc.

Im pretty sure there is a way because i used to do something similar when logging into Zmud. I havent done that in well over 2 years though so I cant tell you anymore.

Woah, thanks Caede!

I'll toy around with it some then... wish there was a Pocket pc client available!

I don't know how you could stand playing when you actually see the GSL tags in their raw form.

Yeah... That's going to be a pain I think. Maybe I'll just bug Simu to develop a PocketPC client eh?

Of course by the time that happens, I'm sure PocketPCs will probably be obsolete.. :P

Maybe I better just invest in a laptop with an aircard to bring to work.

I'm pretty sure there is a port that doesn't have all the GSL or SFML tags, but I don't know what it is off the top of my head.

That or if you know what you're doing it wouldn't be too hard to write a relay program that strips the tags for you.

I do recall that before zMud had 'official' Simutronics game support, it used to be able to connect without the GSL data. I'll poke around and see if I can find how you connect for that. Maybe in an old version of zMud...

ROFL... Yeah, I agree with that I think.

Thanks Caede, I'll try and dig some stuff up on zuggsoft as well.

Edit: I think the no GSL address is java.gs4.game.play.net port 4900, enter the Key, then enter /FE:JAVA
Edit again: I tested out the above address with a key I got from the website (when I got home later) and it works great without the GSL tags. I'll keep messing around with it and find some good Telnet clients for PPC, and we'll see if I can continue to feed my addiction!
