Let's say there's a runestaff with +1 to SP or +4 to Mana Regen or some other enhancive property. It also says it has <whatever> charges remaining (many, innummerable, etc.) Now I asked on the officials and was told that when the charges run out, the enhacement goes away, and must be recharged by a merchant. But how do the mechanics of this work? Do you have to invoke the charge every so often, or is it automatic? And exacly how long should it last?

It is always working as long as the item is worn or held (held for a weapon or shield). Charges are removed randomly. So they can last months or weeks.

So has anyone tested how long these enhancive items last once fully charge up? Is it a week?

The giftbox items from the conversion use the same mechanic. One of them has lasted me over 4 months.

I've heard removing/wearing can induce charge removal, and so can login/logout.

I generally log in for a couple hours at a time, and never remove the thing.

One of the giftbox items is still working for me, hasn't even reduced charge yet.

Mine worked for almost a year with constant wearing of the item. I think it depends alot on how much you play too.

Ildran posted on the boards once how charges work. Charges can be depleted at random time intervals, and each time you wear or remove the item.

With the numbers he gave generally, if you're trying to conserve charges... If you will not be needing the enhancement for 10+ minutes you're statistically speaking better off stowing it than leaving it on. Since the probability of losing a charge is more likely to happen when holding/wearing it for 10+ minutes than from removing/stowing it.
