a serrated double-edged silver katana with a beaked sea snake wrapped around it.
It is a 2 lb 10x short sword and the sea snake attached to it will bite your opponent and "bind" them for several rounds. It also have some nice actions:
You grab the beaked sea snake wrapped around your katana and give it a solid yank! It hisses dangerously at you.
As you touch your katana, the beaked sea snake recoils defensively and rattles its tail.
You gently tap your double-edged katana and the beaked sea snake hisses as it hurriedly slithers down the length of it in a tight spiral. Just as quickly, it turns and slinks back to its original position.
Contact me if interested.

Since when does any kind of water snake have rattles? Some of those item makers/alterers really need to be taught some lessons before being allowed to do things.

It really doesn't make any sense for a water snake to have a rattle. It's probably a stock script, though, as all of them seem to have it.

A short sword based katana? Shouldn't that be a wakizashi?
Still a damn fine weapon though.

Excellent weapon.
I also love Allen's "coincidental" sale of this item during the SoaP release week.
Do you work in marketing or something?

<<A short sword based katana? Shouldn't that be a wakizashi?>>
Yeah, in accordance with Japanese weapon rules, katanas must be some certain length minimum. Wakizashis are shorter, and tantos are the shortest. They're all the same weapon, in essence, but their size determines their name.

Just curious, I don't know too much about weaponry but I had assumed another defining aspect of a katana is that they are single edged...

Yes, but no double-edged Japanese swords exist in GemStone as far as I know. Tantos, wakizashis, katanas, and nodachis are the weapons in question, and all are made in the same fashion, differentiated primarily by size.

Oh, I didn't even notice that, sorry.
That's not a katana.

If it was just the right length to be a short sword by European standards but by Japanese standards to be a katana, then I guess it is. Why? Because double-edged katanas do exist. http://www.weaponmasters.com/index.html?ID=57049d4c6387f2c5d6101e18d650665a&ITEM=CS-88DEC

Now show me one that's serrated.
And show me a short sword that has a blade longer than two feet.
Oh, and katanas really have two definitions, one of which is a general sword. In the more popular, samurai sense (and with the GS katana base), they're single-edged.

If you want to get technical about it, you might want to find a Japanese weapon craftsman and ask them if a real katana has two edges. That link you found seems more like a gimp company reproducing things with their own ideas, and borrowing someone elses name.
I see it like calling a 45 auto... a revolver.
The way in which you use a proper katana, never calls for a backhanded swipe which the second edge would be used for.
At best you could call a doubled edged katana... a modified one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katana
If you took the first part... you could seemingly call ANY sword a katana. But in the traditional Japanese style, it has one edge.

Yes, just because some low quality metal smith is selling fake katana's for $500 doesn't make it a real katana.

I don't understand this thread. It's short sword based because it's from the era of people being able to alter other weapons into katanas. Someone had a 10x weapon and got it altered. End of story. Why in the fuck is there so much discussion about it?

Because there are so many descrepancies in what the item is. We know how it was made. Someone who doesn't know what they are doing screwed it up.
The thing is... katanas shouldnt be a short sword base, snakes shouldnt have beaks, and sea snakes can't even use a rattle, so why would it have one?
edit: forgot the serration, and silver.. color silver is fine... material of silver would also be stupid.
Also on the snakes being wrapped around a sword... wtf. How do you use it then? If its on the blade, the blade would cut the snake, if its on the handle you cant hold the weapon, and a katana doesnt have a pommel as such, so you cant have a snake there.

All that chit chat aside, its a pretty nice weapon hope the buyer enjoys its use.

I'm pretty sure that can happen to weapons that have had snakes added to them.
Didn't Tsin just finish selling this thing?

If I could afford it I would buy it in a second. Maybe work at some realtering but I am looking for a high enchant weapon with snake, or mechanical flares.. short sword or dagger based.

Yeah, the weapon itself has nothing wrong with it, I am sure it works quite well. Not trying to knock the sale or nothing - I know someones going to buy it and love having it.
I just find alot of things in Gemstone that I can't quite imagine, even in a fantasy genre.

If you are seriously that hardcore about getting a snake weapon, then I suggest you definitely spend all of your time in EG camping out in Serpantis' tent, or one of his many-to-be dopplegangers this upcoming EG.
If I had to take a guess, I'd say a full merchant list and shop locations/descriptions will be available for us Primates well before EG kicks in.
(P.S., you can probably find a bunch of lower ET'd + better priced snake weapons by asking around on the officials, or wherever, but if you manage to get spun/on a snake scroll, you can choose what sort of snake you put on.)
Hope that helps :)

This item would be fun to convert, especially when the snake falls off, leaving you with a katana base weapon, minus its natural katana heavy crit weighting.
