I had a long held myth dispelled last night, and I just wanted to confirm it.

Does stance/orientation affect skinning ability or skinning values?

In other words, is stance off better than guarded? Is kneeling better than standing? I always thought so, but now I'm hearing otherwise.

Anyone know for sure?

I used to have better results kneeling, but that was about it. Not sure if it was just in my head or what. Or if it was changed. Makes sense though.

Never heard of stance affecting it.

I always heard that stance and position matter. So I do it in a script. With a singled FA trained anything, I rarely fail a skin kneeling in offensive. unless it's something ridiculously hard like a war griffin.

Stance does not affect it.

Kneeling does. The only effect stance has is making it less likely for you to get RT when standing up from a kneel.

I've done about 40,000 skins across three different characters with similar training.

I've found that I have significantly greater resale value from war griffins when skinned from a kneeling position.

Unless its changed since I played my ranger and actually skinned kneeling gives you a higher success rate and better quality skin. As Stay said, stance just effects RT when standing after;

You also gain a lesser chance to fail when kneeling. Or what Elrodin said.

What about a skinning knife vs. a Falchion or similar weapon?

Also what about your off-hand, is empty best?

(Been so long since I've played, let alone skinned, I should know the answer to both of those)

Knife or dagger (small edged weapon) is best. Some critters need certain weapons to skin them.

Large and medium weapons (edged or otherwise) take a penalty to skinning.

A hook-knife (brawling) works as well as a dagger (edged).

Yeah, any small blade will work best for skinning. The larger the blade the larger the penalty towards the skin. Also as far as "skinning knives" go, there are only a few that actually give a bonus majority of them dont make a difference at all.

I do not believe this is totally true. Yes, kneeling helps your success rate in skinning (fail verses skinned). However it does not affect the quality or sale price of the skin you get.

So if you are so fully trained that you never fail to skin Critter X, then do not bother kneeling. It doesn't help you get a better skin, it just helps you not to fail in skinning.
