So, I've decided to go back to school, and I'm starting law school in a coupla weeks, back in Boston.

I'm a bit nervous, to go straight into the high pressure environment of law school after a not-so-high-pressure environment of the entire continent of Africa, don't know if it's a hot decision.

Plus, then I had to go read Scott Turow's 1L, which made law school sound like a nightmare.

Anyways, I seem to remember some PC people started law school. Is it like Turow's 1L? Tips for coping and not pulling out all my hair?

Edited to add: I think step number 1 will be to knock down my GS time seriously. If anyone wants to take over my accounts (except for my main one, that is), lemme know.

I had to read 1L, too.

I start Wednesday, it's gonna be rough.

where you starting?

And I didn't have to read 1L, my friend heard I was going to law school, and she gave it to me.

Hard but not insurmountable is what I've heard. One of my best friends from school is at Georgetown right now. He says that he's found the social pressures and push to get summer work/interviews more difficult than the actual "school" portion itself. If you've gotten in somewhere good (which I imagine you have, Alok) it's easier to get the choice summer positions.

Boston College. Catholic school boy all the way. ;)

Though I woulda given a testicle to go to G-town. Their politely worded rejection letter said they had something like 8000 applications for 100 spots. And I fucked around too much in undergrad to get one of those (reason: too much GS!)

And way to remember my name. Kudos.

I didn't really 'have' to read it, I'm not getting tested on it or anything, but someone mentioned it as recommended reading.

I'm going to Rutgers. A girl I know is going to law school up in Boston, but it's not Boston U or BC and I forget what the name is. What other law schools are in that area?

I pulled a few acceptances...but I didn't want to go to school anywhere near my ex or her family. I'm reapplying this year.

I owe some gratitude to WB for the advice on what prep class to take. Even though I didn't have enough time to do the full length class, the 2 day weekend class helped a ton for the logic games.

Tufts, Harvard, Northeastern are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

I wish I could of taken a prep course - I think I woulda done much better. :( Only two places in Africa to take the LSAT, forget courses, FTL.

Granted, I did pretty decent for myself, but still.

Being a Harvard girl, I am biased, but I guess BC is okay.;)

Welcome back to Boston again soon!

You'll know if law school is for you within your first year, your first semester really. I take the lsat next month, and I'm more than ready to get that out of the way after preparing for the past couple of months. My sights are still on either Depaul or John Marshall, possibly Chicago Kent.

Keller would be helpful in giving away the secrets and tips to a successful first year of law school, but he hasn't been around much lately. In any case, good luck with your first semester.

What's with the disturbing ratio of PCers who want to go into law?

Gemstone attracts your smarter than average players (while there are definitely exceptions), and it was its most popular right around a time when a lot of us had free time as teenagers who are now moving onto grad school, heh. That'd be my guess.

There's a couple law school stories, and it's a good read at least. Written by a disenchanted corporate lawyer.

Wonder what firm in Philly he is from.

Luckily, I don't want to go into corporate law, I'm looking to do public interest/gov't law.

So, kids, I moved to Boston yesterday, and settling in now. I forgot how much I loved this city. Was at the Paulist Center at the Commons for Mass, coolness. So many of my friends live here that it's gonna be difficult to keep up the whole internet gaming thing (though I think I'll still try and harass you folks...

...so, I think I'm gonna freeze my thingies with Simu, except possibly to mentor sometimes on my one account. Hmph. Dunno yet, might give it a month, to see how the schedule plays out.

I totally miss Boston. Going to college there was the highlight of my life before meeting my hubby. If you wander down Beacon Street toward the Bull & Finch (the original setting and inspiration for Cheers), upstairs was the main offices for Emerson College, back when I went. Give them a wave for me :)

I'm in law school right now!

I'm starting my second year right now, and I love it. Oh the joy of Torts, Contracts, LRW, Civ. Pro., and Property!

Have fun with that.

Seriously though, have fun with it. Thrive in the Socratic environment. It's actually kinda fun in a masochistic way to be on the spot and have to answer questions that you never in your life would have anticipated.

If you every have any specific questions about Law School in general, or subjects in particular, please feel free to PM me at any time.

I was just wondering if your schools are using ALWD or blue book for citations.

TheEschaton

Blue Book. We have a whole course here on Legal Reasoning, Research, and Writing, which uses the blue book on citations as like, the center of worship practically.

After almost three weeks of law school, my consensus is this:

The work isn't so hard, but that may be because I actually like it, and actually enjoy doing it....

....but there's a frigging SHITLOAD of it. I should be doing work right now. Every free minute I have, I keep thinking "I should be doing my Civ Pro reading...." or "I should really figure out what replevin is in Property..." or "I need to write that essay on gratuitous bailment in Contracts...."....

But the stuff itself. I love it. I was made for this.

We use Blue Book, but I haven't had to actually use it yet.

I agree E, it doesn't seem too hard, just a lot of work. I'm starting to slack and book-brief too many cases...
