Hey everyone,

Im starting a pretentious Death Metal band at school, and I need some advice for some good bands/albums/songs. Anything you can think of is good.

Thanks

I've never heard of a pretentious death metal band. They tend to be more gritty than pretentious. If you want to be pretentious, start an avant garde garage band.

But as far as recommendations of metal... um... Beyond Agony, Baphomet is kind of cliche but still good. If you like Exodus, a more classic death metal band, then you'd probably like Gutted. I actually like Gutted more, personally. Monstrosity's nice and hard.

Metal is the most fun to play, in my opinion. I started playing bass just to play metal, even though I more generally listen to techno.

I think the most important part is the heavy metal umlaut.

Would Motörhead be nearly as good without one? No. Mötley Crüe wouldn't be half as motley. And probably a crew. I certainly wouldn't have spent the last ten years of my life trying to figure out how to pronounce Queensr˙che. I still don't know. Just don't do it over a consonant, Spin̈al Tap already has that covered.

Ugh. Queensryche does not belong in any discussion of metal. Fucking irritating progressive rock.

They have the umlaut. End of story.

Deicide ftw.

And death metal band at school reaks of childishness.

Fuck yeah it does reek of childishness, but it's a great time to get involved with music and playing an instrument. I don't think I've ever been more passionate about music than when my friends and I were stifled by the RuLz at school. Heh.
Also Decide FTW x2.
Recommed 'Once Apon The Cross' for inspiration becouse I guarantee you'll never play any of it.

Heh! Things are different in England, I see. Here in America, boys are more apt to start "alternative rock" bands in their garages than metal. Or surf. God, I hate surf guitar rock but I hear it all over.

Sadly, metal has taken a slight downturn in popularity, as far as mainstream accessability anyway.

That isn't sad at all. If everyone listened to metal, it'd suck.

Deicide, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Lamb of God, Evermore, Iced Earth, Cradle of Filth (new CD out shortly) ... I listen to the first four, the other three have too much synth, but decent enough.

Browse these two sites, you'll find a TON of stuff. The second site is Russian, but written in English.

Caliban, Earth Crisis, *some* Acid Bath (though this tends toward more melodic -- look for a song called 13 Fingers, good jam, Diab Soule too), Bleeding Through, Bury Your Dead, and I like Killswitch Engage personally.

edit: Carnivore -- Angry Neurotic Catholics. You could listen to this too if you just want to laugh. -- It's from the Retalliation CD

Slayer - not exactly death metal but a huge influence on death metal, Iron Maiden, At The Gates, Entombed.

Not a huge death metal fan, but the beat can be entrancing and the guitar can be amazing. The great thing about it is you really don't have to work so hard on lyrics since most people can't really understand what is being yelled in the first place. Just growl, yell, and add a few syllables now and then and you're good to go.

Not exactly true. Many metal bands are now incorporating small sections of lyrical/paced down bits then flying back into the very hard stuff. It works very well to break up the monotony of what you're describing.

Some poeple study the lyrics and sing like they're the singer.
It might take a bit longer to learn and a fuck load more Strepsils but that stuff is still uber popular.

I have found this to be true in some of the overseas stuff (Swedish, Finnish, etc.) as well as newer stuff. I admit this. As an American child of the 80s, death metal is just still defined as an entrancing, angry beat with alot of growling. I remember going to a club and watching a performance and feeling like a senior citizen because I had absolutely no clue what they were saying. It sounded like a lot of rarrr, arrr, ruhhhh.

Iron Maiden, again, is not death metal.

I haven't heard any metal that wasn't power metal come out of Sweden, and I love a whole lot of it.

Do yourself a favor and find a better genre of music.

Pretty much any other genre ensures hotter chicks.

Ditto, I don't like country much, but its the in thing for most of the girls I know/meet. So sad..

If you're doing it for the chicks, go emo. You'll be disgusted with yourself, but you'll get laid.

I realize Iced Earth isn't death metal, nor is Evermore, and Cradle of Filth is iffy in my opinion. He was asking for pretentious stuff, so I put in some variety for feedback, which is nil. On the same token, Meshuggah is fantastic, but again, not death metal.

Thanks for all the responses. To put aside any debates, this band is 90% a joke, and 10% to hang out with my friends and dick around.

Funniest thing I've heard today, well second. Cradle of Filth is NOT death metal. WTF.

I think it's cool that you can replace the word 'death metal' with 'good' and 90% of the things said in this thread about bands are still true.
