fumble 1
pathetic 2-10
miserable 11-19
lame 20-29
poor 30-39
passable 40-49
adequate 50-59
competent 60-69
good 70-79
talented 80-89
excellent 90-99
Exremely lucky? 100+

Not sure if anyone else ever took the time to figure this out. I'm thinking maybe it's the same messaging on the hidden disarm rolls, too. Anyhow, just some trivial info I tracked.

Yeah, that information is out there.

The hidden disarm rolls are the same. However, they are somewhat random as well. For example, if you disarm and get the "passable" attempt message, it does equate to 40-49, but it could also be a bit above and below. If the actual roll was a 42, it could show up as Poor or Passable. If the actual roll was a 48, it might show as a Passable or Adequate.

We know this because A) we've been told by roguely GMs, and B) you can sometimes see it.

The messaging "You feel you could get the trap with a little more effort" is a message that shows you are close to getting it and the trap has been modded down. The "It's stuck and you just can't get it" means the attempt was below that range (less than 80 endroll on the attempt).

How we can tell B from above is that you may get a message "You just can't get it" on a Passable attempt (supposedly 40-49), and then next attempt you get the "With a little more luck" on a Poor attempt (supposedly 30-39). In this situation the first attempt could have been a 37 (incorrectly shown as a passable) and the second attempt could be a 43 (incorrectly shown as a poor).

Regardless, it's still useful to know the ranges for disarming. In fact, I'd say it more important to know the ranges for disarming than it is for picking (because with picking you see the roll anyway, who who cares what the descriptor is). However, with disarming, lets say you disarm and it shows a talented attempt, but you get the "Stuck, just can't get it" message. That means you either need to Lore up or not even attempt it, as you are likely to blow the trap if you keep trying. However, if you get the "With a little more luck" message on a Poor attempt, you know you'll be pretty likely to disarm it on the next attempt.

I'm thinking that when you actually see the trap, get a decent "roll" then the trap becomes easier. I've seen it on more than one occasion.

I have been told that seeing the trap/lock reduces the roll required to open it by -10 on the next attempt. If you get the message that a little more luck is required or that a little more effort would be necessary then it mods the lock/trap by -5 for the next attempt. I dont know if that still stands now days though. And I dont know if that ever stacked on consecutive high roll unsuccessful attempts, I wouldnt think it would based on my experience picking.
