View Full Version : Pet Peeves!

Everyone has them.. what in Gemstone bugs you to no end? What makes you wish (or makes you glad) that you're a capped Sorcerer who can implode everyone?
Editted to add: This is not, "What is right and wrong about Elanthia", so while you may disagree with how someone feels, it's a pet peeve. And tryng to systematically rid them of their pet peeve by posting how wrong or stupid they are, really is a moot point because most people don't LOVE having pet peeves. They're just there!
Mine include overly-stereotypical flat characters with no rhyme nor reason behind why they behave as they do. Overinterpretation of official documents, like if the clothing document says Sylvans like to wear chainsil, some people say only Sylvans dressed in a chainsil bliaut are dressed according to culture. And finally, when you slip up and accidently whisper or say something very OOC outloud, and instead of letting it go, people continue to be like "OMG WHAT'S (insert OOC reference here)."
That I have stand around with said Sylvans waiting for a merchant.

Waiting for merchant work and having to watch 20 some odd people react to every little thing a merchant does/says in the same way. I know you're trying to RP.. But damn.. You all look like such tools.

Because someone coming out of a twenty-five minute coma to cast spells on, pick locks for or heal someone in their group and then return to said coma immediately after is pretty much the antithesis of roleplay.

Wow, <person> is a great healer, she must be really old!

:grr:
Continuing an IC confrontation over PsiNet bugs me to a much lesser extent.
People who loudly and repeatedly miss a roleplayed characteristic of another character.
People who respond to a spoken acronym by saying "what's a <insert awkward pronounciation of acronym here>?" Do these people say "what's a fuh-bye?" in real life when they watch the X-Files? (Signs point to yes.)
GMs that shit all over roleplaying and the IC environment in general.

Not quite sure I understand what you are saying here, to be honest.
On topic - tone whores and people who will not stand up to my character because they somehow know she's a higher train than they are.
She means people who, to use her example, think proper sylvankind can only wear chainsil, because the fabric is mentioned in the clothing documents. No linen, no silk, no suede, no nada if you want to be a "real" sylvan.

Where do I begin.
MERCHANT WHORES. Those who giggle, flail their arms about and do everything within the power of the universe to get the Merchant to interact with them. I hate when a merchant will walk into a room and you get 150 fucking people nodding at them an attempting to start a conversation with them.
Anyone who says boxies, wizzies, etc.
People who overuse an idea. That can be any idea. Character personality, race traits, outfits, weapons, etc. Dark elves with pale skin, purple eyes, speak dhe'nari and have their weapon of d00m. I'm all for sticking to an idea, but I think when it comes down to it, everyone has their own little quirks that make the character, branch out.

People who can't let go of a little bit of IC or OOC drama and just get on with life...who have to ban someone OOC out of something IC no matter the character they use (even if that character had absolutely NOTHING to do with any drama that occured between another character and somebody).
People who run to each and every single damn merchant, who don't give other's a chance at merchant work.
Merchant events where anyone and everyone in game is in the one room with a merchant....and interacting with each other, spelling up, blah, blah, blah, blah (most especially when the merchant ASKS FOR SILENCE!...and then there're people who'll keep playing their instruments after the merchant mechanically silences the room...). Give the damn merchant the silence they need to work for everybody, would ya?!
People who shit on other people for giving a damn about RP. And of course, those people who don't give a damn about RP themselves, and try to spread the non-RP-ness...

If you're around someone who behaves a certain way all the time, but whenever a merchant is around, they behave utterly differently (and that's the only time they behave like that) I assume, as do a lot of people, that it's a break in character. My characters generally assume that the person has a mental health problem.
Editted to add, you may not agree but hence why these are pet peeves. Not everybody feels the same way about stuff.

<<that it's a break in character>>
What if their character simply acts different around merchants as part of their character?
Couple more ..
1) Whispering to an empath for healing while they're cleaning off all their scars and getting no reaction.
10 mins later a character walks into the room and gets insta-healed and the healer blinks at you and says ''oh sorry I was asleep/in a daze''.
2) The zombies who wake up only when the GM merchant arrives and 'award winning' RPers who only start to RP at that time.
3) The gyldemar road box machine.
4) Atreau.
5) Snowie.

I don't remember anyone saying the poor MAers should be locked out. You asked why it bothered people, and you got an answer. What relevance does it have if roleplaying is part of the TOS or not?
In any event, disruptive behavior actually is against TOS, so the case can be made that the MAing in question is sanction-worthy.

And it isn't the dark elf language. It's the Dhe'nar language.

Dhe'nari started out as players talking nonsense to each other and whispering the meaning. Right now, though, there's a language, though it's not as advanced as, say, Klingon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klingon_language).

There actually several written documents that outline various dhe'nar phrases and the like, it is just rather hard to come by. I see it as a way of those players who use it, that is their way to rp with one another. Certainly most if not all, wouldn't approach someone they know as non-Dhe'nar, and start prattling of in Dhe'narsi.

I have a big problem with those that are always condeming this one or that one, for their rp decisions. I say if they are trying..and those around them are happy with the interaction...good for them, at least they are roleplaying.
I might buy that if Dhe'nar was not an option available to every dark elf in their culture selections.
As it is, its kind of exclusionary to those who might wish to be part of that RP. Then again, it also could be considered as a way to keep the actual Obsidian Tower group pure to their RP from outside influences.
Hm, another pet peeve...
Those that don't even try to research the race/culture/profession/whatever they're playing. I mean, it's one thing if one chooses to ignore that and go in a different direction for RP reasons but quite another (to me) when they're just willfully ignorant.

Yea, I remember Celtic's site (black background with blue script typefont). I was, at one time, long long ago, attempting to get a dhe'nar dark elf into the obsidian tower but other activities got in the way.
I'm down to one dark elf now since I just sold my sorcerer, but I'd still like to find a copy of the basic phrases since my remaining dhe'nar gets greeted in the mother tongue frequently when he's not tucked away in the enchanting tower. I would at least like to attempt to respond so as to attempt to maintain RP perspective instead of scowling and stomping off like a bad tempered wizard.

Heh they assume that a ton. Washee's player and I are married IRL (we met before we even knew what Gemstone was). Washee is Augie's in game brother. Augie is married in game to Lunatick.
You have no idea how many people confuse those two as far as the IC vs OOC relationships. Augie will be sitting around talking about her husband and say it's Lunatick and people are like "I thought you were married to Washee?" Then she plays it off and is like "EEW! That's my brother!"
And Lunatick's player is one of my best friends in and out of the game, but some people just don't realize there is a separation from IC vs OOC with relationships.

2. People who can't type. If you're in a text based game with a decently leveled character, how the hell can you not know how to type? Sure everyone makes mistakes. But if I have to stop and decipher what you just typed, there's a problem. (Example: Dessedemona)
3. Merchant idiots. If I were a merchant and I said to be quiet, anyone who spoke, spelled, laughed, played an instrument, etc. would be out. No questions asked. Out. Or those amazing people who show up with all five of their characters who normally never speak and suddenly they are just star roleplayers.

Simply put, if someone..is involved with a rp situation, and it is not affecting you (in general..not you..specifically) in the least. If they are truely attempting to role play a situation, put depth into the character, I see no reason to condem. If I don't like the type of roleplay they are involved with..I can always just walk away, or find and IC reason to not be involved. Far be it from me to condem other's and their rp, or how they enjoy GS. I dislike others who say.."Hey, that's not how your supposed to RP that type of character.", or "Wow that's stupid rp, and my rp is far superior." The Elitists I guess who don't understand everyday people are the bulk of what make up Elanthia..sure there are the "Stars" and "Legends". but the everday folk who go about their day, attempting to rp, are just as important, if not more so.

I do understand that point of view. I don't view myself as being able to tell anyone else what is, and isn't acceptable for their character or their rp. As long as what they are doing, doens't directly interfere with my ability to enjoy GS, as long as they aren't totally clueless, and stupid. My point of view is let them be, sometimes it takes awhile to develop character depth. I remember when I first started playing GS, I had no CLUE. I like to think while Merji isn't stellar in anyway, she's played consistently. While other's may not like the rp, or what have you. She's not interfering with anyone else's enjoyment of GS. Had I not been gently coached, and had a lot of good examples to look to..who knows what type of rp'r I would be. Shun the ones who are attempting, and they may not ever try harder, or get better? It'd be like coaching a Little League team and letting a kid swing until he hits the ball. I was the skinny kid who struck out a lot, it would have pissed me off to no end to be treated like that.
Executive summary: We should respect each other. Respect and noninterference are not even remotely interchangeable.

The analogue goes like this:
You walk into the ER, bleeding from a stab wound.
You walk up to a nurse and poke her in the ribs.
The nurse, who is currently bandaging another patient, glares at you and goes on about her business.
You shoulder check the nurse, knocking her away from the patient she's bandaging.
This strikes you as appropriate behavior???

hoooooooo! What a proud moment for the top of the food chain.
7. Taking me to the vet for "the big snip", then acting surprised when I
freak out every time we go back!
8. Getting upset when I sniff the crotches of your guests. Sorry, but I
haven't quite mastered that handshake thing yet.
9.Dog sweaters. Hello??? Haven't you noticed the fur?
10. Acting disgusted when I lick myself. Look, we both know the truth.
You're just jealous.
Now lay off me on some of these things! We both know who's boss here!
You don't see me picking up your poop do you???

Okay, that dog fart thing...I'm sorry:
My ass STINKS. I'm not afraid, I'll admit it.
But Iams small bites in the green bag... MOTHER OF JESUS CHRIST AND ALL THAT IS HOLY WITHIN THE LANDS!
Our min pin cleared the living room tonight. I thought I was going to throw up.

I laughed so hard when reading this. It brought back memories of youth when my parents raised/trained/showed St. Bernards. The ones on the circut lived on Eukanuba (Iams) products. Try living through that scenario but having it come out the ass end of a St. Bernard. It was almost as if a green fog rolled into the room.

I'm still trying to figure out what dog farts have to do with GemStone.
Can we get back on topic, please? This is about GemStone pet peeves, not just any ol' pet peeve.

It pisses me off when your report someone for AFK scripting three times in a day, and nothing gets done about it.
BTW if anyone is in the nations and wants some fun, say "Thanks" on the dais. Then report Clown for AFKing. Perhaps it will make one of these retards take note.

What a terrible script if it triggers from just "thanks".

You say, "Thanks."

Toekin put a shiny coin in his black backpack.

Clown says, "Yer welcome."
So bad. And yet, he's been doing it for....18 hours. I imagine the GMs have some form of clause whereby they won't pull someone with multiple accounts (which this guy has).

How wonderful the game is when it takes three reports, a badname and a post on a message board to get them to do something.

It's not really against policy. They're not gaining anything.

If you want to get him fucked, just whisper "X says, "Thanks."" to him. Times a billion.
