Dunno just woke up Sunday morning with sore throat and slight fever..by the end of the day I was in bed and have been since. Chills and sweating have been great for weight loss tho.
From what I've looked up high fever is normal for the viral version.
HarmNone
07-12-2006, 10:24 PM
High fever is normal for either version (bacterial or viral) if it gets a good start, Xyelin. The only way to determine which version you have is a throat swab to identify the pathogen.

Yah I broke down and was going to goto my doctor today for a swab..$150 .. told em to fuk off I'll wait it out a few more days hehe. Been drinking some tasty pedialyte in the mean time.

Just don't wait too long, Xyelin. Infection isn't a good thing, and it can go systemic. If it does, it'll mean a lot more than $150.00. It'll mean a significant hospital stay. :(
Dude, 104-105 fever means near death. Don’t be a fucking pussy and pay.

That's insane, imo.

13 degrees Farenheit more and you'll hold the Guinness world record.
Do you have what it takes?
...And you might want to eat some Cipro before it spreads to your heart.

Switched to Tylenol 500mg every 3 hours (started at 1000mg) for the past 12 hours. Fever has been steady at 100 or less now. The tonsils look slightly better with less white streaks but just as swollen and painful. Also I think my spleen is sore but not visibly enlarged.
This is going on day 5. Vic/HN am I survivor?
HarmNone
07-13-2006, 08:20 AM
Getting the fever down and keeping it down is important, but you're taking too much Tylenol to do so. Tylenol is liver toxic. See if you can cut back to 1000mg every four hours for two doses then, 1000 mg every 6 hours. If the fever climbs again, get thee to your doctor or an ER. Also, if the soreness continues for more than a day, or worsens, you'll need to get that checked out. Infections can travel and that's something you just don't want.

Yeah it hurts like hell currently but I think it's improving slightly today so I'll give it another day. I'm taking 1000mg ever 6 hours right now of the tylenol.. ibuprofen wasn't cutting it so I had to switch yesterday.
HarmNone
07-13-2006, 09:04 AM
Tylenol is better suited to reducing fever. Ibruprofen will do the job, but Tyelnol excels at it. If you're at 1000mg every six hours, I feel a lot better about the amount you're taking. Just watch that pain, hon. It can be an indicator of problems elsewhere due to invasive infective agents. Don't let it go on without doing something about it.
I do hope you feel better soon. Sounds like you've been through a rough few days. If it's bacterial, a good dose of the right antibiotic to fight the specific bug will do wonders. If it's viral, we even have medications to mitigate those little woogers these days. :)

I'm betting, by the severity of the symptoms and how long he's had it, that it's bacterial and antibiotics 4 days ago would've taken it away about 3 days ago.
From my experience viral is annoying, but doesn't result in 105 degree fevers and days in bed. I dunno, I'm not the nurse, just what I have seen in my personal experience.

Viral infections are, indeed, normally more short-lived, Hulkein. The problem occurs when a viral infection starts a series of events that results in secondary infection by bacteria. That is, very possibly, what happened here.

I used to get tonsilitis and/or strep anywhere from 3-6 times a year. I had them out a couple years ago and haven't had one sore throat since.
Best 2 weeks and 78 percoset choice I've ever made.

Update: 10 hours at the very busy ER today = very acute Strep Throat and Strep Tonsillitis to the point where they almost put me under the knife. 24 percoset at $14 :):) and 20 fucking expensive Augmentin amoxicillin-clavulante. $90 bucks for the generics.
However thank the pharmacy gods for my percs.. never felt better. Bad news is my youngest daughter is already showing symptoms so off to the pediatrician tomorrow to try and get a head start. Hope I didn't infect the whole damned house.
While waiting in my ghetto bed for low priority ER patients shared with 3 other ghetto beds which were all 3 filled with GASP Illegal immigrants (mexicans). The hospital even accepted their Mexico ID once they told them they were illegal. Felt bad for the one next to me.. she slipped in the rain today and found out her baby was dead inside of her. :( Awful thing to hear go down thru a curtain.

Well I was playing the odds :P However next time I won't wait longer than day 3. Ever since my meningitis episode I've been accused of running to the doctor too soon for anything with a fever so I try to make an effort not to.
Horrible for her I'm sure. Horrible for me just as much to be 2 feet away from that mess. They moved her to room "10" (padded walls).

No matter what anyone accuses you of, it's just not wise to wait when your body is telling you there's something wrong. If you've got a fever, you're probably contagious. With children at home, getting to the doctor when you're possibly contagious is just the smart thing to do.

I've been quarantined in the house the last couple couple days.. was treated worse than wezas at a family reunion. Come to find that several kids at her day care have been dropping to strep the past 2 weeks. More than likely one of my spider monkeys brought it home to me.

Heh. The little people have a way of doing that; however, you getting it just makes it more likely that everyone in the house, and anywhere else you inflict with your sick presence, will get it as well! :club:
Anyway, I'm really glad you're feeling better and that the infection didn't progress any further than it did. :)

Why don't you just get them removed already?
Guess that's not a popular option now days but this is only my second occurrence since like childhood. Come to find out they're pretty important for your immune system the Dr. told me.
HarmNone
08-04-2006, 09:39 PM
Did you take all of the medication your doctor prescribed, as he/she prescribed it? If you stopped taking the antibiotic before you had used all of it, you may have precipitated this replay of events, and you may have made the bacteria immune to that particular antibiotic. That's why it's so important to take ALL of an antibiotic, not just stop when you feel better.
If you did take all of the medication as prescribed, you may just be prone to infection at that site. In that case, having a tonsillectomy now will save you a great deal of grief over the long haul.
HarmNone
08-04-2006, 09:41 PM
I've heard about the tonsils being an adjunct to the immune system. It always makes me question, since I happen to have a very strong immune system and had my tonsils removed at five. I think there may be some individuality to how the tonsils actually interact with the immune systems of different people.

Yup took 10 days of really expensive antibiotics. I'm gonna call and just ask for a cheaper type of refil and see if they can call it in.
Any other ideas for the relapse?

That's about all you can do, really. Be sure and drink plenty of fluids and try antibiotics again. The doctor may want to swab this, though, to be sure what pest you're targetting. It may be a return of the strep, but it could be something else that took advantage of your lowered state of resistance. Not all antibiotics work on all bugs. :(

Ish. Also, Tylenol, Advil or Motrin for the fever; but, I figured you probably already knew that.

I can't see how they can be good for your immune system if it's affected you like this twice in two months. If you never have problems, sure keep them. I still have mine. But once they start causing problems, I don't see the point in keeping them.
Good luck to you. Being sick is horrible. :(

When it came to medical anomalies, I've always liked the "when in doubt, cut it out" line of thought. It saved my life a few times already.
Cancer free, and missing a little breast tissue (I have plenty to spare, blessed with buxomness), 1/3 of my cervix, and the left thyroid node, and glad of it.
If it was my tonsils being stubbornly sick and painful, I'd hand the surgeon the scalpel myself if I thought it would convince him to remove them. Tumors aside, I am lucky to have a pretty sharp immune system and haven't had to worry about my tonsils at all.

Went back to the witch doctor after unbearable pain and no sleep or food the past 2 days and had another test which came back positive for strep again. This time it was also on the rear roof of my mouth and uvula as well.
I took door # 3. Knock out punch.
A) Two shots of penicillin in the ass cheeks which was cluster fucked because they didn't have the right dispenser/plunger thingy so she used some make shift stick thing (the cover of the syringe maybe?) to plunge it which caused way more pressure at a much slower agonizing rate into my fat ass.
B) MORE PERCOSET! Yay!
I was at the ER from 2am till 7:30am and boy what a freak show. This one crazy black girl had evidently been hopping ERs to score RX but they were on to her at this ER and she was throwing a hissy.. yelling at all the white people in the waiting room etc.. she ended up calling the police 3 times herself.. proceeded to give them more shit each time and the finale resulted in her screaming
"YOU GONNA SEE REALLL (racial epithet) NOW.. I'M GOING TO KILL YOU (racial epithet)" and then threw a phone book at the officer which resulted in the popo body slamming her ass. I was hoping for some tazer action but no such luck.
There were also two psych admissions that were waiting for Baker Act pickup that sprung out of the crazy person room and went HAY WIRE in the ER. Crashing.. screaming.. thrashing.. security chasing them in a circle.. slipping.. sliding.. butt ass naked..well like naked super nuts because their gowns were flowing in the wind when they ran past my door.
My nurse told me they played rope a dope where one acted like she crashed onto the floor out cold and as they opened the door the other bum rushed out. They mentioned drug use might have been involved.. DO YOU THINK?
Then there was the vietnam vet in the lobby who was playing peek a boo with his reflection in a turned off tv for a couple hours.
All in all I gotta say I love the ER.
Except that I did notice two people I went to highschool with are now PA's in that ER.. bastards.
