Anyone know how much MIU (Magic Item use skill) it takes to use strength/elemental targetting imbeds/rechargeables? Is there a formula?

Depends on profession.
Magical professions have a bonus, semi's, lesser so and squares don't.
For a 425 imbed about thirty ranks to be safe, 509...still depends on your profession, 14 give or take.

It also depends on if it's within your known circles. You'll get a bonus if at some time, you could learn the spell.
Good luck finding a 425 item.

I'm not sure what the activation formula is, but here's the duration formula (from https://www.play.net/gs4/info/magic-guide.asp ):
MIU duration formula:
base duration + (MIU ranks * (half normal duration for spell ranks known))
When using the TAP command to activate a magic item, MIU ranks are halved.
When using the RUB & WAVE commands, use the normal MIU ranks.
When using the RAISE command, MIU ranks are 133% normal.
Example:
The spell Thurfel's Ward (503) spell duration formula is 1200 seconds +60 seconds for every Major Elemental spell known. Your character has 50 MIU ranks. What is the spell duration for the activation commands?
TAP: 1200 + (25 * 30) = 1950 seconds
RUB & WAVE: 1200 + (50 * 30) = 2700 seconds
RAISE: 1200 + (66 * 30) = 3180 seconds
When using the DRINK & EAT commands to activate a magic item, only the base spell duration is calculated. In the case of the Thurfel's Ward spell, it would be 1200 seconds.

Square/pure/semi is irrelevant. Profession only matters in that all members of a profession have the same spell circles and sphere. There is no part of the formula that says "IF pure THEN +50". In fact, a warrior would be better off with a 425 imbed than a cleric, assuming equal stats.
The formula is (all stats are bonus):
(LO + IN) + stat + MIU skill + alignment bonus + knowledge bonus - (spell level * 5) - (armor/encumbrance) + activation modifier + d100
For stat: lesser spiritual circles is Wisdom, major spiritual circles is Wis/2, lesser elemental circles is Aura, Major is Aura/2, sorc is (Wis + Aura)/4, bard/empath is (Log + Int).
Alignment bonus = 40 if you have access to the circle and 20 if you don't but it's within your sphere. Squares aren't aligned to a magic sphere, and sorcerers are aligned with both elemental and spiritual.
Knowledge bonus = 20 if you know it and 20 if you're a ranger using your own imbued item.
There is no armor/encumbrance penalty if you're trained for your armor and not encumbered.
Activation modifier is (all roughly) +50 for tap, +20 for rub, 0 for wave, and -25 for raise.
Assuming a spiritualist with 0 Logic, Int, and Aura bonuses using wave, you'd need 76 bonus (17 (really 16.5, but ranks are integral) ranks) just to have a chance at activating the 425, but you need 25 ranks anyway, so you'd have a 40% chance of activating with those. For the strength, you'd need 10 ranks to have a chance (a 5% chance, specifically).
In short, post your profession, log/int/aura bonuses, activator, and desired success rate.
