I know it's been asked before, so sorry.

How many ranks of each to get everywhere?

Oh and anyone do any research into how encumbrance can effect it? Like if you need 10 climb ranks to get somewhere, having 20 ranks means you can be encumbered 2 RT worth or somesuch.

25 ranks is sufficient, 30 to be sure and if you're weak.

I put 27 ranks on Ganalon in swimming to get through the water to OTF because 25 was giving me trouble. Of course his STR stat is not maxed so take what Stray said into consideration.

I've had no problems swimming to OTF with 25 swim. Also have 25 climb. Used to have 30 in both, and have had no significant problems with any obstacle.

30 ranks of swimming, I never failed.

25 ranks of swimming, I can count on this happening (note that this is with surge running, so 50 STR bonus and I was unencumbered to start with).

As you enter the water, the sucking mud drags you down slowly. Moving out further, you suddenly encounter a dropoff and slide quickly underneath the surface.

[Under The Black Water]
Wet blackness envelops everything, and the mud grasps powerfully at feet and legs. The lack of vision and the unsure footing combine to confuse the senses, making direction a meaningless idea. Even "up" is in question at times. One can only swim and hope.

You do your best to swim somewhere, but the mud and darkness conspire to keep you from making any headway.

Roundtime: 5 sec.

[Gyldemar Road]
To the west the black water has completely covered the roadway, and to the east the roadway dips and jogs, fighting to stay above the sinking terrain.
Obvious paths: east

You pull yourself slowly out of the black pool, covered with mud and dripping water profusely.

Roundtime: 5 sec.

I have 40/40 because I don't like failing and like to do things easily while encumbered.

I had the same problem as Stretch had when I dropped from 30 to 25 ranks. I upped it once a try until I could get across with minimal difficulty.

That doesnt discount the fact that sometimes that muddy water can be tempermental on even the best days.

I'm always getting screwed over by the water on the way to OTF. Had 25 ranks of swimming and would have fail about 60% of the time. Upped it to 30 ranks and fail now about 50% of the time on the first try.

For me, the extra 5 ranks are just worthless. Now I just cast haste before swimming to minimize the annoyance factor.

Agreed. 25 ranks and I always fuck up in the water.. and to the point of death several times. I used to have 30 ranks about 3 years ago and still had about the same trouble with that stoopid water.

I have 28 of each, no problem with OTF or the Rift unless I"m stupid and weighed down.

May also be a function of physical fitness? I have 50 ranks.

Heh.

STR bonus: 30 (sometimes 50)
DEX bonus: 25
AGI bonus: 25
PF: 101 ranks

Would explain my problem, since I've only got 24 ranks.

Plus, I just noticed this on the offical site:

Physical Fitness also helps with HP recovery, stamina pool and stamina recovery, some swimming, some climbing, some maneuvers, as well as resisting disease and poison.

Hence, the reason I probably suck at the OFT water.

0 ranks of swimming can unfuck you in such a fashion as long as you beat the timer.

So as a wizard with 24 ranks of air lore and enough major elemental spells to lower 5 sec RTs to 1, I'd be fine with 25 swimming (or less)? I haven't been in that water, is the RT always 5 second intervals?
