If I 3x picking, when should I try and pick up 404? I don't generally play characters all that long, so is it far enough down the line that I don't even have to worry about it? Also, when can I start picking my own boxes (bearing in mind I like to uphunt a little)? Third and final question- what is required to see/disarm scarabs? I've had some trouble scarabing myself early in my career, and I'm curious if it has to do with a threshold for skill bonus, or something to that effect. Thanks.

If your wasting all your tps to 3x pick.. you should pick up 404 asap imo. Of course that will leave you in the tower picking all day because you will be a shitty rogue. :P

I would suggest at least 1x in pickpocketing, if not 2x. For the reason that PB mentioned of you being in the tower all day long and some people don't tip well.

1x pickpocketing is an abomination. You should be killed for even posting such a stupid idea.

Well he's wasting all his points on spells and 3x picking/disarming, he's not going to have shit left.
Plus it'll be funnier when he 1x's and gets caught and pwned/blacklisted.

God.. I forget how cunning you can be.
I bow to you.

If you're not going to have this character for long, meaning that its doubtful you'll be picking past your 30's at best, then dont bother wasting your time in being a rogue. Because you really dont become a quality picker for customers until you're in your 30's.

Well, my real intention is just to pick for myself and my friends, so I'd just keep him like-level, and hopefully be able to pick all the stuff they bring me.
3x locks
3x disarm
3x perception
10-15 ranks arcane symbols
401 through 408 MnE circle
Everything else is secondary.

Working off the stats of my human rogue, I figured with Tsoran's spreadsheet that it's do-able, and hunt-able with.
1x Armor
1x Physical Fitness
2x Ranged
2x Dodging
2x Ambush
2x Perception
3x Disarming Traps
3x Picking Locks
0.5x Climbing
0.5x Swimming
0.5x Arcane Symbols
0.25x Harness Power
Up to 404 by 20.
A small note...with this build, you get no CMans until after you get 404, and no Stalking & Hiding (which isn't neccessarily bad, but not neccessarily good).
This is just an example build, to show that it is possible to build a 3x Picker that can still hunt...

I've always wondered... assuming the training plan Ganalon posted (which would obviously require a fixskills), around what level would a rogue be able to open a majority of boxes, excluding the upper level boxes from NTF?
Ganalon was picking OTF boxes by late 60's with 3x lock/trap + 403/404 at an 80% success rate. Increase that % if you add wedging/lockmastery to get past the boxes with no traps and locks too high for that level.
By mid-70's I was picking 95% of OTF boxes or better.
At 81 I am a few shy from being a full 3x lock/trap and my current lock/trap highs are -1150/-450. Or thereabouts.
I'll have to log on to double check my profile. I think I can up my lock number if I get a box with a lock close to -1200. I'm picking mostly my aquaduct boxes now so getting a high end lock will be challenging unless I'm picking someone elses's Ithzir boxes.

With spells up through 404 and high mental stats, how important is 3x perception vrs 2x perception?
Adds to the ability to see traps you otherwise would not see.

Unless your insanely picking above your head 3x perception is not neccessary.
Since he's just interested in being a picker, and points arent an issue, I'd say adding 3x perception would be necessary given the fact that some of his friends might be old enough to have boxes insanely above his young rogue's head.
