The Oriskany, a decommissioned aircraft carrier, was sunk 24 miles off the coast of Pensacola, Fla., on May 17 to form an artificial reef.
The sinking of the 888-foot ship took 37 minutes
The SMALL BOAT on the deck of carrier contains a generator and electronics to set off the explosions. It was designed so this small boat would float free after the carrier sunk!
It was Titanicized!
Pensacola spent a lot of money trying to get the Oriskany sunk there, competing against a bunch of other cities. There was a committee that lobbied the Navy and made the case for Pensacola, all told they spent like a million bucks to get it sunk there. These things are pretty big tourist attractions and bring in lots of divers.

Yeah it's awesome diving and seeing the stuff that grows on the wrecks. If you ever get a chance check out the german U-boats off the coast of NC. That's right, we had uboats that close during II.

U-Boats pwnt several ships off the coast of Florida and I actually had the chance to dive on a cargo ship sank by one that ended up in the Keys.. was very cool.
One was also spotted dropping off two german spies from sentries on top the St Augistine lighthouse. (they were met with a party! at the beach and executed)
Glad to see a great new artificial reef. Back in college I worked on several man made reefs off the coast here although the visibility in the Gulf sucks ass.

I'm glad they found ways to make those old ships help nature out :)

They've already helped nature by pwning fascism and commies. Now they're helping fishing trips.

I wonder how many fish were stunned or killed by the explosions themselves? :)
Other than that, interesting, would have been fun to be in the little boat during it.

Alas, poor Oriskany; I never heard of it.
No amount of Pimp My Boat bling-bling could have ever brought back to being what may have once been.
Cool picz. Glad it was Titanicized
Rumor has it that there were U-boats spotted off of Galveston, and one was sunk.
Here's an interseting link of interesting naval events/sinkings.
