Hey guys, I was wondering if a non-magic using square is even viable? I'm talking no potions, scrolls, magic WEAPONS or ARMOR (no crit weighting/eting), and certainly no spells (self-cast or not). I'm just talking pure non-magical means from 1st to 100th, can this work? What kind of strategy will I need?

Have an empath fused to your left hip, and a cleric to your right, and watch them both hit 100 way earlier from constantly fixing you. Of course, if you won't allow healing (magical) or raising (magical), you can kiss high levels goodbye anyway.

Crit weighting isn't magic, and it's pretty hard to not use enchanted armor and still survive.

Oh, and enjoy departing every time you die: "certainly no spells (self-cast or not)." That alone makes it *very* difficult.

Not to mention that some creatures can only be hit with an enchanted blade. Pyros come to mind, I think there might be others.

It could be done, but it would be hard and not much fun imo.

<<Pyros come to mind, I think there might be others.>>

I think all golems fall under that category. Steel golems definitely.

And box-trap scarabs.

And also cyclopses in Solhaven.

The only difficulties would be decaying all the time, not being able to hunt non-magic creatures (the main hassle is having to identify them), and the loss of CvA by using non-enchanted armor. A possible difficulty is if you consider herbs magical, you'd never be able to get healed, which would cause CMAN penalties to stack up like crazy. Given that first aid skill helps to eat herbs, it's pretty obvious to me they aren't any more magical than taking a lot of vitamin C to get rid of a cold.

You might as well get weighted/padded weapons/armor, as CON and DEX provide natural crit padding and weighting anyway.

It's 100% viable if you have a good grasp on square tactics.

As an aside, this thread is probably mis-titled.

I would go as far as to say that having someone heal you is not utilizing magic.

Probably your best bet would be to go with voln-fu (as long as you don't consider that magical) since you don't need an ET'd weapon for that. You can easliy hunt your way up with non ET'd weapons until you learn voln fu and then cruise through most of the game with it.

You need a blessed weapon to kill undead...

You can bless yourself, before that you can use flower petals or silver falchions.

<<You can bless yourself>>

That's magic!

<<before that you can use flower petals or silver falchions.>>

Those are magical things!

Silver falchions are magical how? They are dropped by silverback orcs who cast no magic spells and have no mana. I guess if you just assume that because it can hit the undead it must be magic then it is, but I don't see it that way.

This guy considers crit weighting to be somehow magical, so basically any special property is "magic" as far as I can tell.

Yes. Barely.

Make sure critters you hunt absolutely, positively do NOT brandish any form of weaponry/attack with high DF rages like clawing/stomping.

It is not impossible.
