And I love Mike, who has been simply wonderful about feeding them for me this week while I've been driving down to Pittsburgh every day to sit in the hospital with my mother.

And I love that I've gotten this time to get to know my mother and patch up a lot of the places that needed patching in our relationship.

Mostly, though, I love the cats. Warm, furry, purring and utterly accepting little balls of unconditional love, always ready to meet me at the door and jump into my arms for a cuddle after I've finally made it home, they never tire of my hospital ancedotes or just my ranting and raving. When I have to cry, they let me soak their fur with great good humor, then they head butt my face until all tears are blotted away. The longer I do shelter work, the more it amazes me that people actually dispose of these marvelous empathetic creatures as if they were worthless garbage. How utterly shortsighted!
