View Full Version : Colognés

The last time I bought a cologné was probably two years ago. Its a tricky affair. Some colognés smell great on their own, but you put them on and they smell like bug spray.

Nordstroms is a great place to shop colognés. They have all the stock to sample and a helpful salesperson, at least in my area.

Essenza di Zegna is what I picked up two years ago. Good thing too. It was Zegna or Kenzo. I chose Zegna and the sales lady filled up a sample spray bottle of Kenzo for me. I tried the Kenzo, but it smelled like scented toilet paper on me.

Zegna still smells good and fresh on me. I also wore Too Sexy from Vicortia’s Secret which got some compliments.

But, after a couple of years I felt like something new.

For some reason I only buy colognés in the Spring. I guess I like the fresher, lighter colognés.

So I purchased Rochas Man in the store. Not bad. Really more of a formal cologné, so, not really a day to day thing. Its really heavy for a spring cologné, very perfumy.

As it happens, they put a Versace Men sample in my bag. I tried it and it works. On me, it smells like incense, which totally suits my persona. Its not pachouli so don’t give me shit about it.

I'm 99.99999999999% sure that cologne doesn't have that accent.

CKOne ftw.

Victoria's Secret... Very Sexy for Men. It's all I can tolerate... and it's slightly different. It's a good one.

Acqua Di Gio is the ultimate panty moistener. Not to heavy not to light. Made by Armani. The only thing I'll wear anymore.

Hugo Boss, Hugo Boss, Hugo Boss.

Hugo Boss.

The only times I've had members of the opposite sex telling me that I smell good (when there was no component of flattery leading to or during a sexual encounter) has been whilst donning Hugo Boss.

And on another occasion, copious amounts of Speed Stick original.

Gucci is also very, very nice.

I used to wear Acqua di Gio up until everyone else started wearing it.

I started just using Kenneth Cole after shave for everyday stuff. Dolce & Gabbana for Men on weekends and stuff for me now.

Um, as a girl, I can say this is very true. I kept smelling a good friend of ours last Christmas and thus against my will, flirting with him incessantly. Scott brought this to my attention and I told him live would be much better for himself if he bought this cologne. He still hasn't.

As far as picking a fresh spring-type scent, I recommend DKNY's Be Delicous for men. It has a crips, green apple scent similar to the women's, but has a nice darker tone that men will enjoy.

Fierce by Abercrombie absolutely drives me nuts when I smell it on a guy. I cannot express how much I love that scent. I don't wear it specifically for the reason that it smells all the better when I cross a guy who wears it.

Other than that, I don't really know much about other colognes. But I could pick someone out of a crowd that's wearing Fierce in a heartbeat.

Bob's right, no accent aigu on cologne. If it did, it'd be pronounced more as colognAY. Pet peeve of mine.

Back on topic...I really like Intuition by Estee Lauder and Salvatore Ferragamo Incato.

Envy by Gucci ... no longer being made so I guess this is my last bottle.

Hugo makes a new scent, can't recall name but it's in a black bottle. Hugo Boss is very middle school so is CK1 don't be that guy.

Aqua di Guido.... nuff said, wear it if you're an italian with a wife beater and some gold chains. That scent is overplayed.

Joop Jump is pretty clean, Jean Paul Caultier has a good scent that's very light I'd give a thumbs up to it.

Anything made by Abercrombie, Fossil, American Eagle, Gap, etc..LOL plain and simple L O L. That shit is like canoe or english leather.

My favorite on a guy is Kenneth Cole Black. It smells soooo good.

I've never been big on the Tommy-Abercrombie-American Eagle fragrances. I've smelled them on too many retarded people to like them.

Just go to Sephora and smell everything!

ROFFLE

I'll make sure that's NOT on my gift list to receive. Especially since we live in the same proximity.

I've got 2 I usually switch from when I wear any olfactory enhancement at all.

Eternity - CK

Opium - YSL

I've got a water closet full of old ones like Obsession, Drakkar, Farenheight, Paco Rabanne, Photo, Halston Z-14, and 3 very old bottles of Stetson, Polo and Pierre Cardin (from my teenager days). I'm sure the last three are denatured by now, I like them for nostalgic reasons alone.

Yea if you're a single migrant worker male all dudded up for ladies night at the coco loco.

Edited to add it [Stetson] was the shiznit for the western motif teenage years of my youth in East Texas. But that was back in the mid 1980's.

How long does cologne last? I have some that just doesn't smell 'quite right.' I am wondering if someone bought me some nasty smellin stuff, or if I just let it sit so long it isn't what it should be.

I dont think I have ever bought cologne myself... But I get it as a gift at least once a year.

Cologne can change smell from person to person. It might smell nasty, but they probably didn't do it intentionally.

Well, I am talking about the smell from the bottle, or sprayed onto a piece of paper. Not what it will change to once mixed with a persons natural musk/scent.

I believe Bob addressed your error in judgement.

I remember when Brut was advertised as not only an aftershave but a cologne. And for some odd reason I remember the Brut Joe Nameth commercials when they aired real time. :(

Oh, and Brut cologne was the first cologne I received as a christmas gift back when I was a wee lad. Way before I ever had a notion to shave.

Issey Miyake and Michael Jordan are my colognes of choice. The MJ smells ravishingly good.

I usually wear a light perfume in my normal day to day. But when I'm doing a night on the town, and looking for a great smelling scent that's also bold and classy, I go for either one of the aforementioned.

Nah, I was just being pedantic. No one caught my drift so I'll be a little bit more clear cut:

Anything sold within the immediate tampon and Maxy Pad radius in the personal hygiene section of Stop & Shop does not serve a worthy cause as substantiating itself as anything in cologne form.

Old Spice would be the only panty lotion that can be worn in cologne form, which may reside next to anti-yeast forumlas, but that's about it.

The key is to buy the lotion of the same scent as your cologne. You don't want to confuse someone with three different smells from lotion, cologne, deoderant, hair gel, etc.

I mentioned the two I wear but I also will, from time to time, go with CK-B and I like Givenchy Blue Label, not a fan of red label too musky. Also Jean Paul Caultier has a nice fragrance out but I can't recall the name, it might just be Jean Paul Caultier....

I actually read once, in a men's health article I think, where they advised that one could layer colognes to wear more than one over a certain length of time.

In this article the idea was to wear 2 different but complimentary scents. One that has a short duration and one that has a long duration. That way you can mix it up, and yet still have one on you by the end of the day.

Personally, if I were needing a second hit of scent I'd just carry a small sample vial of it for immediate application. That mixing idea seemed a little scary to me.

While a good smelling scent is great. Nothing beats the smell of a freshly scrubbed body and hair with a good smelling soap and shampoo.

Back when I was working on my undergrad, that was the only thing great about 8AM classes.
