...is tomorrow.

http://www.dayofsilence.org/

I encourage everyone participating to start talking a lot more than usual today to set it up.

Day of Silence sounds like a good thing. Alliance/Friendship between gay/lesbian/straight students.

But, of course now there's the "Day of Truth" in opposition to the "Day of Silence".

"For the second year in a row, students across the nation this spring will join together to oppose the promotion of homosexuality in schools and to stand up for biblical values."

What's it about? The website says "it's the biggest student thingy evar!!!11" but there's no real information on what it is. All I know is that it's a day of silence for homosexuals everywhere? How does it help? I don't get it.

so I'm confused.

people are raising awareness by not talking?

No better way to get the issues out there, than not talking about them.

Although, honestly, I'd never heard of it until today.

All I know is that it's a day of silence for homosexuals everywhere? How does it help? It's a show of support, like wearing a ribbon for breast cancer. The website is a little rah-rah, yeah, but the idea is the important part.
people are raising awareness by not talking? There are also like a bajillion posters up with catchy slogans like "we'll let the posters do the talking!!" although they don't say anything besides that, so I don't really get how that works.

edit:participating students hand out printed cards

WTF, I didn't get any cards. :(

What did you gather then, Stanley? The wikipedia reference is the explanation of what Latrin linked.

Both days make zero sense to me, but whatever.

They should extend it to a 'year of silence' to really send the message home.

I never heard of it until this thread myself. I bet that's because no one can talk about it because they have to keep quiet.

The first rule of "The Day of Silence" is you don't speak about "The Day of Silence"

In the end, I really don't care if someone is gay, straight, or whatever. That's their decision. But also, I don't care if someone is straight, gay, or whatever- stop shoving it in my face! Unless I know you and we're conversing, or something. That is, unless you're trying to get a reaction out of someone's grandparents, then it's just funny.

Are there any other groups who would like to tell me, a straight white conservative dude, how much I hate them?

Pick any ethnic group out of a hat... although mexicans seem to be the popular pick right now...

I organized and participated in Day of Silence for many years. It's an amazing thing that really helps bring discussion on sensitive issues to places where that discussion normally does not happen.

I often found it humerous to have people walk up to me during those days while I wasn't speaking and saying to me, "What are you accomplishing? It's not making me think about gay rights!" And I'd know right then and there I had accomplished my goals. The very act of telling me they weren't thinking about it required them to ponder it for some period of time. And if I had been speaking, they would never have given it even that moment.

It also had a great side effect of helping to build communities out of allies and queer students, and that's vital.

Good work anyone who gets involved in this!

All this means to me is that I don't have to hear any gay sympathizers talk tomorrow. I love this day.

From what I gathered, the website thingy was trying to raise awareness on the issues of gay and lesbian something... But my modest comprehension skills couldn't really tell me wtf was going on.

The wikipedia definition seemed a heck of a lot more clear cut to me.

P.S. My campus is teh soopa' liberal and I haven't seen an ad for this even once.

There's a lot of posters for it up at my school and there'll probably be a pretty good turn out. I'm going to spend the day trying to make people break their vow of silence.

Heh... Tuesdays are definitely my most animated day of the week. I was screwed from the early morn' get-go (assuming I was going to pretend I was actually some sort of retro-renaissance 21st century monk.)

Anyway, if I ran into you, Mr. Artha and your wonderful mad chill crew of disgruntled man-eating arthropodic bastards, it's safe to say that I'd probably be breaking any and all hypothetical vows of binding silence very, very prematurely.

I want to see:

DAY OF TRAYF

The Day of Trayf was established to counter the promotion of the non-kosher agenda and express an opposing viewpoint from a Christian perspective.

If you believe...

Shrimp isn't an appetizer. It's a sin.

blah blah blah. You get the idea. A companion day a la godhatesshrimp.com

I'd do whatever the geniuses behind such a festive holiday would will (Their genius mostly being that the whole site is a spoof and is mainly used for the luring in and making fun of what modern society may deem as "posers.")

Orange flavored gum is the shit. Also, why the fuck should I care if abunch of gay people stop talking? or anybody else for that matter? Hell, I'd pay for most people to just shut the fuck up.
