View Full Version : How do you view...?

Not sure where to put this, but this folder is good as any.

Couple of things I've always been curious how other people see..

When we're out hunting, all of us have encountered someone else in the vacinity, after the same critters. My question is, when you're competing for beasties to kill and running spaztically around the five or six rooms like chickens with your heads cut off.. How do you see this?

I picture the characters sprinting around, giving the area a quick once over and moving on. When they're moving through the same area without speaking, I can see them shooting nasty glares at one another in their competitive marathon.
~*~

"Leaps from hiding to attack!"
Do they literally leap? Do you see the sword before the swinger?

For that matter.. what do you think of hiding? Does the person just insinuate themselves into the surroundings well enough that you don't notice them? There should be a negative bonus for wearing garish colors..

~*~
Defensive Spells. If we could see all those spells, all the time, we'd all be blind. I see them as only being visible when they're being put on, and when they're melting. Because.. well. That is the only time we DO see them.

Also with some spells.. for example.. 'a writhing barrier of thorns'. How can one have that, but still snuggle their sweetheart? Easy, I suppose.. The spells only activate when provoked.. and become visible again then.

Hey, I think it's good logic. The alternative is seeing a bunch of blurry, glow-in-the-dark blobs and trying to interact with them through their walls of thorns and cloaks of shadow..

Interested on seeing other people's takes. I'm at work with play.net blocked by our lovely SYSADMIN, so keep me entertained.

Some of those thoughts bothered me too.
Although my favourite was the hiding while wearing garish colours. Good points. :)

Alot of the hiding has been covered before, from what I remember it boiled down to the hider is so good that they basically magically hide. Since you can do it in the open, in front of 100s of people.

Spells I have always considered to be bright and colorful when cast, and when dropping. When they have been cast, they end up fading into the caster, leaving an invisible aura protecting the caster.

I view hiding and ambush as more of succesfully placing yourself in a vulnerable spot to attack your oppenent. So you are sneaking up behind them or maybe hiding in a bush and jumping out as they come by. It can have different effects for the same command, just have to use a little imagination. Keep in mind that some rooms take up hundreds or even thousands of feet of space, so when someone runs by the room they are actually traversing a great distance in some cases. The best example I can think of this is the Lord of Rings movies when they are under the mountain in this huge cave room with lots of pillars, that would be one room in gemstone, but it is huge. Once again, a little imagination helps.

That's the same explanation on how an Illoke can cast at you in what seems like a blink of an eye, while you're running as fast as possible from room to room.
It's that the rooms are huge and even though you felt you were only in it for an instant, you were actually in there a lot longer.
Like Drew said. Imagination helps.

This is all true.. time is very relative in our little world. It can take us five minutes to speak a sentence, and less then a second to decay and be reborn.

My favorite hunting situation is the person who is trying to stealthily stalk around hunting areas while wearing stilettos, miniskirts, luxe stockings, low cut bodices all while wearing 20 pieces of jewelry, various sacks and packs, goldfish bowls, kittens, lizards, and all the other crap people cover themselves with.

Realistically, they'd sound like a one-person wagon filled with trinkets rumbling along.

I can see someone stalking and hiding wearing fluffy (but quiet) stuff more readily than some armor though. It always strikes me as odd to see someone leap out of hiding wearing plate. Gotta agree about the stilettos though. I have a hard enough time walking normally in them on a floor, much less sneaking in them while traipsing through a cave or forest.

Plate is actually a pretty mobile/quiet type of armour, it doesn't clank around like you would think. Chain hauberk is much more noisy.

Or things that take milliseconds like when a gold ring is taken back by the navigators it's a long scene that goes by instantly (as an aside, I wish the navigators weren't ice age stuff because I would like to have seen more of them). Or how you can travel from the Landing to Solhaven in 30 seconds while covering miles and miles.

Back in the day, when I would hunt Darkstone, I think I remember there being this one random messaging (maybe around TKs) about some kind temporal and/or psychic transrelocation that took lifetimes to complete its cycle and... Stuff.

All in all, it was un poco estraño, esse, and the script was ridiculously long so it took up, like, half of my screen.

Mental note to max out hiding and take up all thirty pin-worn slots with festive bangles...

RL pinworn moustache FTW, esse!!
Also, I thought changes were made to discourage ambushing while in plate.
