you might be running an old version, it changed to another server not all that long ago, try update download or something like that in the game and see if it starts downloading the updated file, then just open the lich folder and double click the file, then your on the way to scripting with ease.

I just downloaded from this link this morning for the first time. Is that not the newest version?

Instead of trying to use the force wizard link, try using the lich icon on your desktop, it should kick up SGE and initate lich.exe to catch the connection.

... well that's not good. It's also very weird, haven't heard about that happening to someone for a couple months. Can you tell me what operating system you're using (Windows XP Home or Pro, Windows 98, etc.), and how many hard drives you have? Like "C:", "D:", "E:" when you double-click "My Computer" ? And if you happen to know, which hard drive is Windows installed on? If you don't want to reply on the boards, you can email or IM me the info; whatever you're comfortable with.

It's not in the documents, but you can get the output from Lich even in Windows by starting it from the command line and giving it the "--debug" parameter. So from a DOS-prompt, in the directory "C:\Program Files\Lich" (or whatever drive it's on), just type:

"lich.exe --debug"

... and that should create a text-file called "C:\lich_debug.txt" (or whatever drive Lich is installed to) with all the output from the program. If you can paste whatever ends up in that file to me in an email or something it'd really help me figure out what's going on.

There's a FAQ for troubleshooting on the website too -- http://lich.gs4groups.com -- but it has mostly the same info the text files do, so it probably won't help in this case.

Whoa, uhhh... um, uh... er... hmmmm. Well this is puzzling, lol. Let's see...

Lich is scanning all the different operating system-specific folders for the hosts file, and all the possible drives. There's probably a way to query Windows directly for that information, but almost everything I know is UNIX-based, so I'm not sure how to do it any other way in Windows. Lich of course stops checking for the hosts file once it finds it, and gives up after it checks all the way down to like drive G:, but if it's trying to access a ZIP-drive or something, that could account for the "insert a disk" funkiness.

... but why isn't it finding the file? For XP Pro, it should be on either C: or D: as "C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts", but it's getting told the file isn't there... hmmmm... okay, the only thing I can think of is that maybe your Windows account doesn't have permission to access the folder? But that sort of seems unlikely -- I mean I would expect Windows to say "permission denied" and not just "file does not exist"... I guess it's possible though. Can you think of anything that would be preventing the program from looking in those drives?

Also, can you verify that the file actually does exist? I wish I had something more helpful to answer you with, but for the moment, I'm clueless as to what might cause this behavior...

This is an interesting problem, I'll do some research into it, since I'm a little more versed in the windows platform. I'll get back to you Shae.

C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (win2000)?

You meant C:\Windows\.... for XP?

However as I strive for difficulty, mine is named C:\Windows.0

Why? a dual boot thing a few years back....

Actually, for XP Home, it's "C:\windows\..." and for XP Pro it's "C:\winnt\..." (Microsoft seems to have a fetish for throwing established conventions out the window -- even their own damned conventions).

Okay, Aith linked me to a site talking about your weird "insert a disk" problem, and it said that it's a bug in either McAfee, ZoneAlarm, or both of them. Something to that effect.

The "C:\Windows.0" thing explains why Lich can't find your hosts file. I guess it's about time to figure out how to ask Windows for the information directly. This is a really lame workaround, but if you really wanna play with Lich and don't want to wait for me to get around to fixing the prob, this should work:

1. Open the file "C:\Windows.0\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" in notepad.
2. Put in that file this line (no quotes): "127.0.0.1 gs3.simutronics.net"
3. Create the directory "C:\windows", and in that directory, create the directory "etc". In there put a file called "hosts" (so basically create a file named "C:\windows\etc\hosts".
4. Run Lich and login as usual.

Basically all you're doing is tricking Lich into thinking it's found your hosts file so that it does what it's supposed to do. You won't be able to login *without* Lich unless you take that line out of your *real* hosts file, though.

Not to say all WinXP Pro systems are like this, but my host file is at:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (with a hosts-lich in there as well...)

In case it matters...

Did you upgrade from an XP Home installation or an earlier version maybe? I just googled it to make sure my memory isn't failing me, and apparently I'm right. The locations are checked sequentially regardless of what operating system Lich is running on for the moment, but thanks for the input -- it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, heh.

Huh...interesting. No, mine's a full XP Pro install (no upgrade from XP Home or a previous Win version). And I didn't find any Winnt folders in my Windows folder... I wonder if they moved back to a Winnt folder with SP1 or SP2...

Hmph, it wouldn't surprise me. Honestly, they're notorious for making life difficult with stuff like this, lol.

BTW, I screwed up those lame directions... sorry :/ Not "C:\windows\etc\hosts", I should've said "C:\windows\hosts" -- you're probably better off waiting for me to fix it, but just incase you tried that and wanted to beat the idiot who gave you a broken fix, there ya go :p

Will try the fix.

Seriously mine is a full blown Xp Pro - (Alienware almost refuses anything else)

and its C:\windows\ or in my case c:\windows.o\

Thanks for the help
