Wondering if I could get some help re-training my ranger. I haven't really played in almost two years and have lost touch with a lot of the mechanic's and I could use some help with a training plan setup for my ranger.

He is 45 trains and half-elf, I want him to be OHE and extremely good at ambushing and at least be decent at skinning. Also some help with spell choices would be nice. Or if you have any other suggestions for weapon type or any other help that would be great. Oh lastly before I forget also which CMAN are best for rangers to pick.

Stats look good to me.

For skills (note: I haven't trained a Ranger OHE ambusher, so someone else might have a slightly better idea of what you should train in):

40 ranks in Armor Use (torso chain)
2x OHE, Shield
1-1.5x Dodge
1-2x Ambush
2-2.5x Stalking/Hiding
1x Survival & First Aid for skinning
1x Physical Fitness (for stamina and semi-dux)
1x CMans (get Shadow Mastery, Hamstring or Sweep)
1x Harness Power (Up to 70 ranks, for 210 mana...more if you use spells more)
40 in Ranger Circle, train up to 130 or 140, then go back to Ranger circle
20 ranks in Climbing and Swimming (will need to get up to 30-35 later on, for the Rift and OTF)

If you have points left over, Spirit Lores (Summoning for offensive spells, Blessings for defensive spells) and Spirit Mana Share are handy.

Rangers can't go over 2x hiding. You won't need more than 8 ranks of swiming til 66, so that can wait.

Depending on how well you wish to deal with spell hinderance, you might want to consider going down to brig...

Other than that, it's pretty good like that.

Rangers can't go over 2x hiding.

Ahh, didn't realize that. Thanks for the clarification.

pg. 99 is pretty awesome.

I know nothing of rangers.

Yeah pg99 is my favorite band.

So I have another question if I type in fixskills and it says -

The FIXSKILLS command will allow you to instantly set your skills to match your goals. Use the GOALS command to set your skills to your desired values FIRST!

You may view FIXSKILLS HELP for more information on this option.

To use FIXSKILLS, you must type FIXSKILL CONFIRM within the next 30 seconds.

*** No additional options will be granted outside of normal parameters for misuse. ***

** Make sure your skills are set how you want them with GOALS before using FIXSKILLS CONFIRM **

Does this mean I have it? Or if I don't will it just say that then when I change all my skills and type it twice it will just say that I don't have it.

Also is it even possible to do 2x shield and 2x OHE? I don't know if I will have enough points to do so.

Yes, you have a fixskills.

Don't 2x in shield, personally I'd 1x and find a buckler/medium shield.

I'm at work right now, but around 6am I'll post stats/skills. Stunseed is an Ambushing OHE Ranger about to be 67 trains.

Is Shadow Mastery really worth it? Could one choose something different then that Cman since you have access to 608.

While I haven't played with sniping rangers myself, I've heard that Shadow Mastery is a staple for anybody who hunts from the shadows (not just rangers). It reduces hiding roundtime, sneaking roundtime, and it's bonus to 608 is just damn cool.

(From the play.net spell description: Camouflage also provides a bonus to the ranger who has acquired the Shadow Mastery combat maneuver (CMAN) skill. While SNEAKing, the caster retains 10% of the AS bonus per Shadow Mastery rank. The results are cumulative, so every room that the ranger sneaks will reduce the AS bonus retained until it reaches zero.)

(Also, rangers don't have access to very many cman's as it is, so unless the original poster doesn't want to train at all in cman's (not advisable), might as well train in something that's very useful compared something that's not (like the defense or TD cman's.)

So how is this?

armor use x1 (i'm wearing brig how much do I need?)
shield use x1
ohe x2
cman x1
ambush x1.5
phy train x1
dodge x.5
harness power x1
stalk/hide x2
perception x1
first aid x1
survival x1

climb 15 ranks
swim 8 ranks

spells 40 ranger ///// 6 minor spiritual

after all that I would have 125 mental left, I didn't do this yet was just testing it.

mgoddess

For brig, you'll need 30 ranks of armor use (and if I'm reading the spell hinderance chart right, you shouldn't need any more then 30). You'll have a 6% hinderance in brig, which shouldn't be *too* bad.

With the mental points left over, I'd suggest getting some Arcane Symbols, MIU, Spirit Mana Share, or Lore. Personally (and nothing says you have to do this), I'd drop CMan's down to 1.5x and put dodge up to 1x...but that's just me. Each and every person has their own unique way of training their characters (besides those that make cookie-cutter characters, which are just plain silly).

Oh actually I ment 1x cman that was a mistake. So is it a good idea to bring my armor back down to 30 ranks or will brig not be good enough in the long run?

mgoddess
03-31-2006, 12:12 AM
Brig should be just fine in the long run, since you'll be lurking in the shadows. If you hunting completely out in the open, it'd be more of a decision between the defense chain offers and the spell hinderance it gets.

This is as much as I can do and takes all but 1 of my training points.

armor use x1 (to 30 ranks)
shield use x1
ohe x2
cman x1
ambush x1.5
phy train x1
dodge x.8
harness power x1
stalk/hide x2
perception x1
first aid x1
survival x1

climb 15
swim 8

spell 40 ranger and 5 minor spirit

This look workable?

You don't need more than 1x ambush, costs too much to get it as a ranger. Even ranger archers mostly don't go over 1x ambush and they have more reason too. If anything I'd drop ambush down to 1x and use the point to go 2x perception. This will help you hit where you are aiming more accurately. My ranger ambushes with two handers which are harder to aim so it's more vital for him, but I'd probably keep it if I did OHE just so I always hit where I was aiming and to have a better chance of hitting eyes. Also, you don't absolutely need more climbing/swimming yet but I would move climbing up to 20. Especially if you plan to hunt Icemule or Pinefar at all.

Stunseed is an Ambusher, though heavily weighted physically. Stun's more the type to disarm/feint, then 608 for the Ambush. Ambush/Perception is for the crits, and 1x'ing in CM helps add to the AS. My personal choice of CMAN's is the following.

Combat Maneuver training is as follows:

Skill name Mnemonic Ranks
Combat Movement cmovement 2
Disarm Weapon disarm 3
Feint feint 3
Side by Side sidebyside 4

If you are a solo hunter, replace sidebyside with sweep.

Thinking about it for a moment, if I were you I'd alter my plan to the following.

1x PF ( I do it to pimp a very high redux factor ).
For the pure ambusher, 5 ranks of MoC is all you'd really want.
Try 1.25x in Ambush/Perception if using OHE. I'd prolly recommend higher for THW or something.
Once Stun gets in the Rift, I'll be dropping SMC I think.

Doing that opens up 380 PTP, and 211 MTP's, allowing you to fully 2x Hide/Stalk with 108/75 to spare.
