Anyone able to tell me which is able to generate a higher defense? Wizards or Sorcerers. I have seen this stated somewhere before but can not remember. Thanks

From spells alone.. assuming that both have like gear and such.

Depends on training.

(Editing to add some numbers.)

Sorcerors have access to the 100's, 400's, and 700's. Wizards have access to 400's, 500's, 900's.

Spells with base physical defense (not adding in added bonus per number of spell ranks, not including bolt/ranged/etc. DS)
102: +20
103: +10
120: +15
---------
401: +5
406: +10
414: +20
---------
503: +20
507: +20
---------
712: +20
---------
905: +5
913: +10

Added all together, Sorcerors can add a base of +100 DS while Wizards get a base of +90 DS. This does NOT take into account added bonuses from spell ranks, which might very well turn the tables in favor of wizards (I'm not gonna do that much calculating).

you forgot 911 (greater blurs) for mages

Spells alone at 100 with 100 ranks in each circle will get you the following.

Sorcerer 322 DS

Wizard 331 DS (this isn't including what blurs will give as I don't know what 20 dodging ranks equals)

That is not including the temporary spells of 140 and 919, with those it is...

Sorcerer 422 DS

Wizard 381 DS (same as above)

There really isn't much difference if you ask me.

Hrmm, true. But Blurs adds to Dodging now, not directly to DS. And since I don't know exactly how to calculate Dodging ranks into DS, I didn't add it in.

Some things to note: Wizards don't have as pressing a need for CS as Sorcs do, given that they can be pretty good at that bolting thing. Therefore, they have less need to train in the Wizard circle for the career of the character. Anyway, direct spell comparisons as follows:

400:
5
10
20
15 + 1/2 per 400 over 430

500:
20 + 1/4 per 500 past 503
20 + 1/2 per 500 past 507
sum: 40 + 1/4 + 3/4 per 500 past 507

900:
5 + 1/4 per 900 past 905
20 dodge ranks
10 + 1 per 900 past 913
50 (919)
sum: 65 + 1/2 + 5/4 per 900 past 913

Wizard sum:
105 + 3/4 + 3/4 per 500 past 507 + 5/4 per 900 past 913

100:
20 + 1/2 per 100 past 102
10
15 + 1/2 per 100 past 120
100 (140)
sum: 145 + 9 + 1 per 100 past 120

700:
25 + 1 per 700 past 712

Sorc sum:
179 + 1 per 100 past 120 + 1 per 700 past 712

In the limit where each has enough mana to keep all his or her DS spells running continuously:

The sorc would require at least 40 ranks in MnS and the wiz would require at least 7 ranks in MjE. Assuming they were both going for Max DS, the sorc would choose 700s because he or she gets equal DS and more sorc CS and the wiz would choose 900s.

Therefore.

179 + 20 + 1 per 700 past 712 = 105 + 3/4 + 5/4 per 900 past 913
93 + 1/4 = 5/4 per 900 past 913 - 1 per 700 past 712

The wizard roughly makes up 1/4 per train and let's say the 20 dodge ranks count for 17 DS. It would therefore take the wizard 305 spell ranks to "catch up" with the sorcerer, which will obviously never happen.

However.

This is assuming that the wizard and sorcerer train in MnE equally. Even the case where the sorc doesn't train any MnE is not much hope for the wizard, as he can only sacrifice 30 ranks in wizard (his most productive per rank sphere) to get 50 DS (in the process losing 7.5 for a net of 42.5). At this point he only needs 135 ranks to break even with the sorcerer. I don't know if wizard spells continue to grant bonuses for overtraining in the circle. If they do, then a wizard can conceivably have more spell-based melee DS than a sorcerer. If a sorcerer is not foolish and doesn't abandon MnE forever, the wizard has very little chance.

That is much more practical than my post.
