DS Bonus?

Anyone done any testing on the new Defense bonsus from being attacks by largers critters. Also if I were attacking a much smaller creature with a sword the small creature gains a bonus? If I were to attack a much small creature with a bolt attack(say a wizard spell) does this creature gain half the defense bonus of a melee attack or the full?
