View Full Version : Firefly appreciation post
I'd heard a lot about this series. Slashdot covered it all the time. But since I'd mostly heard about it on Slashdot and other nerd websites I thought I might not like it too much. But when they made a movie based off of it (Serenity) I decided to watch it. I enjoyed the movie pretty well so I bought the DVD series for the TV show (Firefly). Man, this show is awesome.
It's sort of a space western. A mix of high technology and horses. I can't really say enough about the tv show. It has the perfect mix of action, humour, tension, character, everything really. They only made one season of it (hopefully with all the fan interest that it's had and DVD sales they might make more, like Family Guy), but it's well worth buying. Go out and buy the Firefly box set or netflix it or whatever it takes to get your hands on it, it's awesome.

I love Firefly as well. I enjoyed Serenity, but I would have preferred 2-3 more TV seasons with 50+ hours of programming over a 2 hour movie. If I was a billionaire, I would hire the entire cast and crew and produce it for my private viewing pleasure. Ah C'est la vie.

We liked it, too. Good TV.

I netflixed the series and watched them all after seeing Serenity. I have no idea why it was cancelled, either, but SciFi was running the episodes weekly.

Any of you that have seen the movie and series have an opinion if I should netflix the TV series before I watch the movie?

You could watch the movie before the series and follow along without any problems ... you'll have a better understanding and appreciation if you watch the series first though.

What Tsa'ah said. I saw the movie first with no issues, but doing it the other way would tie it nicely.

Like everyone else said, watching the series first would be better, but not required. I watched the movie before the series, then after I watched the series I watched the movie and liked it better. If you watch the movie first you'll probably think the reavers play a bigger part in the series than they do.

mmm Inara.
The only reason I think watching the show before the movie is a good idea is because after some of the events of the movie knowing the backstories and such I think theres a lot more of then oh shit i wonder what will happen next once your done with the movie.

Man you're late to get into it, Drew.
I've had the TV series on DVD and Serenity on DVD for a good while now. :)
Mal kicks ass by the way.

Yeah, totally watch the series before the movie.
I picked up the series like the same week I first saw the movie, MONTHS ago. (Drew you're so far behind it's not even funny).
Anyway, awesome awesome series. Watched it twice. Lots of favorite episodes.
By far, the best part out of everything to do with Firefly is when River goes Chuck Norris. The end.
(Drew you're so far behind it's not even funny).
You are the expert on behind.

River hiding on the ceiling ftw.
River hiding on the ceiling ftw.
Jayne "going to his bunk" as a euphamism ftw.

There's actually a three issue comic series that links the events between the last episode of Firefly and the beginning of the Serenity movie.

I hear there's talk of a 2nd season.

Source? There's been talk of a second season since Firefly was cancelled, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

I couldn't tell you what publication this came from... my memory isn't that good. It might have been the Ausiello Report from TVGuide. If it wasn't him, it was probably from Kristin at E!
Anyway... some months ago, Nathan Fillon, Gina Torres, and Summer Glau were spotted leaving the offices for the new CW network (the network that will be the end result of the upcoming WB/UPN merger) together. Take that as you will.

I know that the actors contracts expired. I followed their message board for a bit when the fate of the show was still up in the air. Joss Wheaden personally stated that the show was dead.

It's sort of a space western.
Why did I totally skip over this sentance when I read this thread?
I finally got around to watching the first disc of the series.
And that's exactly what it is. I find it hilarious/interesting, the wife (strangely because she likes all of Joss Whedon's work) doesn't like it so much.
I think it also has to do with my like of thief movies/tv shows (Heist, Gone in 60 seconds, The Heist, Italian Job, Ocean's 11)

I Netflixed this series a couple weeks ago because of this thread and loved it. It's definitely unique, and I really hope they bring it back!
