Ok, when I was young, and I am going to admit this right here and right now, I saw the man walking on the moon commercials for MTV. All the TV related commercials. I saw Michael Jackson's “Thriller” premier. The Bugees “Video Killed the Radio Star” video...

I kept up with the fore-front of media for a while. As I got older, and as the internet flourished, I stopped watching TV. Now I find myself in a position where I have to watch it again to see what trends are happening.

Seems to me that MTV is less about music and more about lifestyles of the rich and famous. The advertising is the same.

What are these kinds of values to teach to the younger generations? I ask that because back in the day it was all about music getting visual and promoting expression... Fab Five Freddy, Headbangers Ball, Liquid Television, Alternative Late night... now its all like consumerism! What car do you drive? Where do you live? Not what you believe and express.

Who decides that? I'm going to say the producers and advertisers who pay big big money to put commercials on MTV. Is MTV moving youth culture towards consumerism by filling their own pockets?

MTV blows. It has sucked for quite some time now.

It's pretty much a joke, as far as my opinion goes.

MTV is horrible.

The last time I can remember MTV being good was when they televised the battle of the bands between Metallica and Guns N Roses.

It was the Buggles. I used to watch MTV often when it first came out. Now? It's crap.

We can't rewind we've gone too far...

Try VH1 classics occasionally. MTV just needs to change its name.

MTV is aimed at 12-22 year olds (at least according to what they tell advertisers). I think they've found out that kids would rather watch some show with 10 sluts giving head to 10 guys in a hot tub than an actual music video.

I don't see the problem with programming such as this.

Tell me what channel this is on.

I think it goes both ways. Kids would rather watch that, because the media has taught them they want to watch that. Kids who aren't exposed to MTV-type stuff are still exposed to kids who are, and peer pressure is mind-numbing. They're told to practice celebacy, and school systems do whole programs on it, and then the kids go home from school and watch shows on TV that depict sex, in all its glory. The country, driven in part by the media, is teaching kids too many conflicting concepts. And the kids, being kids and not having learned much about self-control yet, will go for whichever concept seems the most fun.

MTV is just one cog of MTV Networks, which itself is a cog of Viacom, Inc.

The only values they're concerned with are those of advertising dollars.

Hail the Vchip and block channels like a good parent. It won't keep them from watching it at their friends' houses, but it will limit it.

I'm pretty sure the concept of MTV being wack is accepted among most social circles with normal levels of intelligence.

Have to agree here. I don't have the stations at my house, but on my mom's cable there's 3 or 4 VH1 actual MUSIC channels

MTV was good when I was young. Now it is blocked from my cable boxes. My old lady does flip between VH1 channels however.

Or how it worked in my house. Dad: Kids, don't watch MTV. Kids: Ok.

Yeah the M in MTV definitely does not stand for Music anymore. I miss the old stuff they used to do. Some of the game shows they used to have would be fun (Remote Control FTW).

Now it's just all about who has the most money, biggest house, fastest car, and who shows the most ass.

And then let's not even talk about their "Real World" shows. Come on, nothing is real about those. Everyone looks like a plastic barbie model, they all are always drunk, and someone always hooks up.

MTV has way too many channels that don't play music it's sad.

MTV Sucks.
